No, they are not the top 20 fighter pilots. The best, with the finest piloting and most technical was undoubtedly Hans-Joachim Marseille. He was the one who shot down the most Anglo-American planes (the best among the allies) and in a single day he managed to shoot down 17 British planes. On his first mission (1940) he shot down an expert British pilot and managed to escape from six enemy fighters with such a masterful maneuver that they could not follow him. He always thought that downed enemies had parents who would mourn them. He achieved a total of 158 victories in just two years, was never knocked down (some aces in the video were knocked down more than 10 times) and died in an accident.

@@albertodelaricavega2838 Of course, Hans Joachim Marseille is one of the best fighter pilots in the world. However, in the shooting rankings he can be found in the top 40. Erich Rudorffer had the same tactics as Marseille and grounded 11 enemies in 17 minutes during one flight. He had 224 victories and fought for 6 years on all fronts with all types of Luftwaffe aircraft. With the first jet fighter he still had 12 victories. Like Heinz Bär with over 215 victories, the kills were split 50% between the Eastern and Western Allies. Josef Priller shot down the most Spitfires and, like Adolf Galland, achieved all of the over 100 aerial victories exclusively against Anglo-American pilots. Experts were called aces with more than 100 aerial victories. The Allies were far away from having experts. But kill numbers aren't everything. Probably the best pilot of the war was Ulrich Rudel. No one destroyed more enemy military equipment than he.

Your Nr.20 is wrong. It should be Joachim Kirschner with 188 Victorys.
Nr.21 Kurt Brändle with 180 Victorys
Nr.22 Günther Josten with 178 Victorys
Your Nr.20 is the Nr.23 Johannes Steinhoff with 178 Victorys

Interesting that some of the names I knew instantly where lower on the count than others. Anyone know if books of the lesser known aces are around?

There is one that I know, there's 4 books on him, but they all include his name in the title: Hans-Joachim Marseille. If you want a quick rundown, Hans-Joachim Marseille was regarded by all of the German pilots in WW2 as the best out of them all, despite him only having 158 kills, but there's a reason for that. All of his kills were against British pilots of which were more skilled than pilots on the Eastern front, of which majority of the pilots on this list fought on. Including Hartmann.

Yes, I was wondering about Franz Stigler as well, but I think his victories were not close enough to make the top 20, but he was an accomplished pilot like Galland was. They both stayed in contact with each other after the war, as other survivors most likely did, along with becoming friends with some of the former RAF pilots as well.

@@tieroneactual2228 This list seems to be based off of kill counts, not overall skill. Because at the top would be H-J Marseille.

@@imronzaki3912 Yes that’s definitely what led to his demise. It was the “new” G Model 109, which many pilots refused to fly initially until ultimately ordered to do so by a General, one that I can’t remember his name at the moment. A gear in the D-B V12 Engine broke & severed an oil line, causing the cockpit to fill with smoke.
