CONTENT WARNING: Frank discussion around depression in this video.
PLEASE NOTE: I am not a medical professional, this video is for entertainment and anecdotal information only. Always consult your doctor if you are considering making any changes to prescribed medications or considering taking any new drug.
    Hi there!
I'm Emily and I had a late diagnosis of Inattentive ADD (a type of ADHD) just two months after my 30th birthday - one whole year ago! Finding out I was neurodivergent was scary and exciting, but I'm now undergoing treatment (currently taking 36mg Concerta XL daily).
In this video, I reflect on how my life has changed since I got my diagnosis of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, and pull out five key changes I have noticed.
One year on, the changes I discuss in this video are:
    1. How much more compassionate I am towards myself
    2. How empowered I now feel to challenge my behaviours and make changes to my life
    3. How much more I understand the differences between neurotypical and neurodivergent brains
    4. How much better I am with money and financial matters
    5. That I no longer feel depressed and have managed to come off the SSRI antidepressant I was taking (Sertraline 200mg)!
It’s important for me to say here that I do not think that there is anything wrong with taking antidepressants, and am not suggesting that anyone else attempt to come off them - particularly if they work for you! I am just happy to say that I no longer feel depressed (having first been diagnosed with depression 10 years ago!), and taking two fewer tablets in the morning feels like an achievement for me! I reduced my dosage of this drug gradually over time under observation of both my GP and a psychiatrist, and urge you to talk to your doctor before making any changes to your medication.
Be sure to say hi in the comments - I'd love to make some new friends in the neurodivergence community, and don't forget to like, share and subscribe for more videos on mental health, ADHD, and related topics!

I've been watching all of your journey, literally binge watching all your videos today from your first day to this... My prescription comes tomorrow and I'm going to start on 18mg as well, I know it's going to be a big journey for me as well and I'm both excited and scared because I will know how it feels when life is in autopilot instead of manual mode and I am scared of the fact that once that happens I can't unknow it anymore even if eventually I stop being on meds.

This is so encouraging! I’m 45, currently on the NHS list for assessment (since January) and I’ve been mildly depressed since I was 15. Hope there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Glad it turned your life around. Best of luck

This video has been very helpful. I connect with your story. I started an adhd traeatment three months ago. In three weeks of adhd medication, I have felt a lot better than 15 years with antidepressants. I hope this continues giving me this peace, like you. I have also stopped taking antidepressants after the first month. Thanks for sharing it! I needed it.

I finally got my ADHD diagnosis yesterday, I'll also be starting out on Concerta XL 18mg as Elvanse is going through a national shortage. Hopefully the medication will help make things a little easier, if nothing else it'll be interesting to see how my brain is supposed to function lol.

Hey, just a question, when you say "internal monologue", I thought this thing was somewhat non existent in people with this condition? can you visualize stuff, on demand, foresight, hindsight?

The depression diagnosis might have been a miss diagnosis which was actually ADHD

Well done 👍 any chance of the name of the clinic?

      Hey there Alessandro :)
I was diagnosed with ADHD by a psychiatrist at Clinical Partners who are a private clinic who provide online appointments to UK residents.
All other aspects of my healthcare have always been, and continue to be, managed by the NHS.
      Hope this helps x

@@adhdemily Thank you very much, there are so many clinics that I wanted to make sure I'd contact one "with credentials". Again, huge props for documenting your journey and for posting this video. Well done, I keep watching ...

I wonder whether you feel a sense of frustration with the medical professionals who treated you for your depression. I'm about to book an ADHD assessment myself at 34; I was diagnosed with Autism not long before my 26th birthday, I've had long term mental health issues and I've been seeing therapists for close to the past 4 years. Not one of the three therapists I saw picked up on it, despite over 100 sessions. It really frustrates me. So, I wonder whether you have a similar experience; the belief that surely someone with a medical background should have picked up on it

@@PhilipPullanit’s insane, I spent the past two and a half years paying off multiple ignored parking tickets on a payment plan with multiple councils because I just constantly avoided dealing with it head on for some odd reason that I couldn’t understand! In a much better position now though!

I’ve just been diagnosed with ADHD and Oh my god can I relate to you. My failings can infuriate me so much so that I’ve regularly destroyed things, 2 iPads and 2 car windscreens in the last year alone, which has proven very expensive. I too never stuck at anything in my 20s and thought I was lazy in large part because I couldn’t concentrate. I’ve a good job now but it took real effort to get there. I start on Concerta XL tomorrow.

I started 18mg Concerta XL today (first pill taken 2 hours ago), reevaluation at GP next week. I watched your videos and it helped ease my nervousness starting the medication journey. Thank you Emily.

@@adhdemily well I have led half of my life (I hope) just carrying a label. And I already knew I was quicker, more observant, and dare I say, smarter, than the average. But somehow all the failures had me bitten hard, countless times. But since I live with it unnoticed, it's kind of a chance to wipe a slate clean if there was any. So who wouldn't take that opportunity and drive onwards. Normal is something I USED to want. 🤣

Great lighting, TERRIBLE audio. I can barely hear you. If you spoke any lower it would be silent. I’m using an external speaker turned up all the way. BUT, closed captions has saved the day! I’m watching this like it’s a French foreign film. One word, “louder!” Speak up! And, I say this only to help. I wish you all the luck in the world, I’m in your same leaky boat with ADHD.
