My personal experience, 2002 Acura MDX with 3.5 V6 engine out of my garage with 7 inches snow, it stuck and couldn't get out, 2004 Audi A4 Quattro with 3.0 V6 engine out of the next garage same deep snow, it went straight to the roadway and took me to work without struggle, and it happened about 10years ago.
OK, I'd like to dispel some of the complaining about the BMW not doing the cone slalom correctly. I will say this. I have driven the Audi S5 and the BMW 435i with XDrive. Both cars are beautiful, and I would drive either one. The BMW was more of a sporty drivers car imo. IIt handled a little better on a road course with less body roll, etc. Braking felt a little better too. The Audi S5 felt heavier, was slightly smoother and quieter with more body roll, not as sporty feeling. However, on bad roads the Quattro system is definitely set up a little better with the torque vectoring and better stability control on ice or snow. Without a doubt, Audi and Subaru both have the best AWD systems on the market right now.
Yes on snow… but like i said in my original comment it is all about compromise… if you are very good on snow, you are not on dry and wet road which is 90% of your driving on 90% of sales…

lol! that last test. driver clearly has a bias. turns way too hard for the bmw and merc but with the audi just drove straight. look at the distance to the cone when he turns
On the slalom comparison, it can be clearly seen that the rear wheels have a higher torque than the front wheels, which can be seen in the fact that the front wheels look literally pushed out of their way, which means they do not dictate the tempo. X-drive should be set in extreme conditions 70% front / 30% rear torque.

They do make a huge difference. Proper snow tires can turn even a piece of shit car with an old and horrifically engineered Japanese car with a front diff into a much more capable vehicle.
I blame it on the staggered wheels. I’ve owned both 4Matic and Quattro cars, and the Quattro really does wipe the floor. But, the Quattro cars all had the same profile tyres all round. The 4Matic is staggered, and i believe it’s the same on XDrive motors.
That's real life .....snow ....same tyres for BMW, Mercedes, Audi....I drove myself to each one last winter .....really Audi won....no discussion about that . Life fact
If you want to go for hard core snow tracks... Choose AUDI'D Quatro If you want to just have fun and if you can trust the electronics to do their job choose BMW XDRIVE Both of them may be 4 wheel drive systems but one can't compare them... X drive is easy to drive whereas the quatro is for the pros, the guys who like it raw..... Both of them excel for the purpose they were built for... So stop fighting.... Just appreciate the beauty of engineering and enjoy the sheer pleasure of driving them... Seriously!!
1 front vs 2 rear lol of course the front wins in winter ( i know they are allwheel drive but the power of the other 2 comes from the rear tyres) quattro is very good anyways
Torsen crashes any non mechanical traction control. I drive an A6 with quattro and the car feels planted to the asphalt in any conditions. Unfortunately A6 is a bit unbalanced, due to the Torsen center differential the engine is pushed way to the front. It's nice for highway driving but in cities in tight turns you get massive under steer. I've heard that putting braces and adjusting the suspension does help a bit.
Не знаю где ты ездиешь, но АУДИ и бездорожье вообще не совместимо. У меня был ку5 с торсеном и Х3 и нива, вот куда доезжает Х3 ауди туда вообще не доезжает, но а нива в не конкуренции.
Watching the video, it seems to be Audi biased in how the cars are being driven and the conditions of the test. You should do comparisons with the same driver on the same course. Why was the Audi always on the left? Seems like the right side had bigger bumps. Fact is, in dry conditions, the Audi plows through corners with heavy understeer. BMW's are perfectly balanced.
What people have to understand is that quattro will win because of the engineering of audi vs bmw and merc. BMW and Mercedes typically have better weight distribution and rwd based awd so front traction is lower than audi and both steering and acceleration are hurt. Audi likes to run transverse engines and when they dont the middle of the engine is in front of the front axle. This makes for better steering, and with a fwd based awd better acceleration. The same reasons that make audi better in snow are the reasons Audi cars are not as good with on road performance. If you dont drive in a lot of snow, and care about driving performance, buy a BMW or Mercedes for your sports or luxury car respectively.
S1mass not with traction control on, which is clearly, you can see it by looking at how abruptly slides are ended. Audi wouldn't allow you to slide that much with traction control on - spoken from experience.
Still, for me, it seems, that driver tries to coorect Audi sooner than others. As well, according to Clarkson, some Audis just do not allow to switch off ESP completely (as demonstrated in Grand Tour second episode), even, though ESP-OFF and associated lights light up on dash.
Quattro 4x4 is unmatched. It's a true mechanical 4x4. All you have to do is put your foot down to a certain point in the proper gear and you basically stick to the road in ice water and snow like a magnet. All mechanical system prevents the wheels from slipping in the first place by delivering equal 4x4 traction to each wheel. You can certainly turn the traction control off and skid all you want. It's lots of fun. However the BMW requires the wheels to slip before the system can begin to calculate the road condition. That's no kind of system. If I was to buy a BMW I might skip the xDrive altogether. I would just feel like an idiot for not having a Quattro. What America needs is a diesel A4 Quattro manual.
I’m sure if I jerked the wheel too much with Quattro I would have massive understeer as well, because that’s driving in snow works. I’m from Colorado and I know this stuff because I have messed around in parking lots since being able to drive. Looks to me that the Merc and Bim have summer tires as evident by the immediate loss of traction. Torsen 3 isn’t this good.
Let me guess , this video was done by Audi ? Anyway do all the cars have the same tires ? Same engines? Plus it all depends how much throttle you give the car , I can clearly see that in bmw much more throttle is given , cant believe these tests 😂
Max G I drive A6 Quattro, this test is accurate as far as Audi's behavior is concerned. I drive my car with ESP on and off, under full throttle, etc. I can confirm this js how the car behaves with ESP on, regardless of how much throttle you apply - if you apply more throttle it'll just do these faster. With ESP off you can have lots of fun, Quattro being mechanical in A6 lets you play with power ratio - hit the accelerator hard and it'll send up to 90% of the power to the back wheels, hold the accelerator through the turn and the front wheels will pull you in. It has to be experienced, it'll blow your mind.
Dmitrii Kharlamov , I understand and agree the Audi quattro is very affective , however the performance if the xdrive and 4matic shown here is a bit biased , I agree with you that the audi quattro system is superior , but not by as much of a difference as is shown here 👍
Funny thing every winter i see how my 2k euro passat 2.8 b5.5 4motion(same as older quattro) drives around many newer bmw, jeep, mercedes...wich stuck in snow, cant move.
The x drive is passive and does not work. The BMW rear end is also semi posi so at slow speeds on snow, the car will understeer (almost in a straight line). You either have to come to a stop or hit the gas to break the rear wheels loose thereby engaging the front wheels to into the turn. I even crashed the simulator at BMW headquarters showing them the flaw. You will notice all BMW X drive marketing footage is at high speeds with all wheels spinning. Audi has active AWD and pulls through corners. Mercedes 4Matic is similar to Quattro and is great too. BMW is a fun car to drive but the x drive does not work. You are better off avoiding the X feature in the BMW to save weight and improve performance.
I am mercedes-benz fun because of its perfection, performance, elegance, etc. But what is most important thing for vehicle you think speed is most important no way AWD is most important thing. For all of us who are not professional drivers with Audi quattro system you are gonna be a safe driver.
javy0820 I drive an Audi, traction control will be very moderate in such situations, it's all down to Quattro's intelligence. Besides, you can see a lot more traction control in BMW and MB
But unlike AUDI or MB, in a BMW you can turn it off completely and actually drive the car, even an xDrive and you can have fun in it. I actually drive a 520d xDrive here in Finland during the winter in snow like that and it doesn't behave like in this video, because that car has actual winter tyres, unlike the car they show in this video. This video is just made to fool the consumer.
Dmitrii Kharlamov you cannot turn off the esc completely in a new Audi. You could in the older ones. Were using Nokian studded proper nordic winter tyres and this F10 520d xDrive i am driving is just planted on the road even in slippery conditions with the esc on. Without, it likes to oversteer a little, depending on how you drive. It responds exactly what you want as a driver. You want to habe fun? Sure turn the wheel and go full throttle, you will have fun. If you want to drive relaxed, just have the dsc on and drive on, the car will be very stable. Not even a hint of understeer or oversteer. In an Audi, you get a lot of understeer with similar conditions and tyres. Audi is easier to control though with BAD tyres, i will admit that. BMW understeers a lot with bad tyres and when you try to power away, it will oversteer with bad tyres. With proper good tyres though, BMW xDrive runs circles around Audi Quattroes, Audid can't even run circles because you cannot even turn off the esc...
Manakuski I can't argue with you about BMW stability I haven't driven one in winter, but running circles around Audi? Are you sure you are talking about Quattro? That contradicts what I'm seeing every day - I have quite worn SottoZero 3 on my Quattro in St. Petersburg right now and I'm yet to encounter a BMW that'll run circles around me, even considering they all wear Hakkaapelita 8 or similar. I'd love to try xDrive myself and have a battle with you to see what you're saying with my own eyes. Not sure about new Audis - I was driving a brand new Q3 a couple of days ago and managed to completely switch off the ESP and even trigger an oversteer despite studded tires and me being scared shitless from sitting so high up. When I turn ESP off in my car it's very easy to drift and slide by pressing the accelerator all the way. And it holds the angle very well during long slides. I even managed to turn it perpendicular to the road by accidentally applying too much gas with ESP off making a u-turn recently, but was able to quickly turn it forward by applying less gas and countersteering. Understeer can happen unless you alter your driving style, you have to shift the weight before a turn and control the torque with your accelerator to avoid understeer in a quattro. You can also turn rapidly to a sharper angle just before the turn to provoke a small oversteer. Or you can just hold the gas and front wheels will pull you in as soon as you start understeering, you can also open the gas wider while progressing through the turn to gradually shift the torque to the rear and end in a nice controllable slide and immediate acceleration past the apex. Speaking from an engineering point of view haldex will never outperform torsen.
That's the problem with modern AUDI:s, the ESC even if you turn it off, goes back on after 50km/h, i think it's called some weird offroad mode, at least in the Q-models. And in the new A6 for example, you just can't turn it off completely. That's what i mean by BMW running circles around new AUDI:s. You literally can do it, while the new AUDI just won't oversteer like that. The biggest difference with AUDI and BMW systems is that xDrive moves the torque immediatly where it's needed, unlike the Quattro it takes a moment to react and it's slower. Probably not the newest ones though. The thing is, there's so many variations of Quattro, it's hard to compare them. From what i've driven multiple A4:s since 1996 to 2009 and an A5 2013, 2x A6 from 2005 and 2006, they all had Torsen afaik, i didn't like any of them. They just don't respond like a BMW with xDrive does. I must admit though, i'm used to the xDrive system and i find it a lot more engaging, responsive and fun. Quattro Torsen is a good system, Quattro haldex is not. Obviously you have to also take into account driver preferences, some people prefer understeer, others oversteer. I prefer oversteer, i hate a car that understeers. Audi is for people who like understeer and light steering which doesn't have that great of a feedback, while i appreciate a responsive car which provides a lot of feedback and which oversteers when you want it to, but doesn't when you don't.

I'm not a real fan of BMW or MB, but I think that this video made by Audi. Just take a look on the last test...you will see that it was a driver fail on bmw and mercedes. Just look at the huge distance between red thing and a car before first turn!
Azeri Sense bmw and merc cant climb fanboy
Selman Ismaili A guy starts a comment with I'm not a fan of... Another guy answers the first one calling him fanboy while negating all the options but the one he's a fan of... So much stupidity in the world...
quattro is the best for offroad but for racing definitely bmw
I don't know why many of of your guys not respect the Audi Quattro and talk like Audi is shit while their won so many of race with their Quattro .
Mercedes🔥👍
Tout dépend du pilote et des performances pneus conditions d'essai non valable !!
Ауди это Ауди, прирожденный Квадро. Сам такой владею, машина огонь.
Tires make a huge difference
domspar fuck off
Ауди 😍😍😍😍
They do make a huge difference. Proper snow tires can turn even a piece of shit car with an old and horrifically engineered Japanese car with a front diff into a much more capable vehicle.
thats why they all use the same tires
CasperEDM No solid proof of that anywhere.
BMW for style points.
Drifting is in it's nature 😏
Style points my asshole
Audi is the best Car in the World!!!😉👍
Mercedes,BMW Best!!!
😂😂 Bmw ❤️ drift
Lol most people haven’t driven bmw or mercedes to compare with shitty audi, I have pulled out from the snow a couple of audis with my benz
i like bmw for ever
BMW 525xdrive %60 %40 Audi simetrik %50 %50 BMW sport drive😍😍
one of the best tests I've ever seen
Audi : snow tires
Mercedes & BMW : all season tires
Great job
I blame it on the staggered wheels. I’ve owned both 4Matic and Quattro cars, and the Quattro really does wipe the floor. But, the Quattro cars all had the same profile tyres all round. The 4Matic is staggered, and i believe it’s the same on XDrive motors.
audi, bmw and mercedes - must drive by the same driver
That's real life .....snow ....same tyres for BMW, Mercedes, Audi....I drove myself to each one last winter .....really Audi won....no discussion about that . Life fact
I'd like to see the Audi driver floor the pedal on turns too!
That is the thing, Audi does not let you too give too much gas even if you floor the pedal as you say 😊
Audi vous avez conquis mon cœur ❤ i love audi 💖💖💖 ta mis a l'amende
Bm et merco bravo...
What about tires? Same for all?
Yeah why?
If you want to go for hard core snow tracks... Choose AUDI'D Quatro
If you want to just have fun and if you can trust the electronics to do their job choose BMW XDRIVE
Both of them may be 4 wheel drive systems but one can't compare them... X drive is easy to drive whereas the quatro is for the pros, the guys who like it raw..... Both of them excel for the purpose they were built for... So stop fighting.... Just appreciate the beauty of engineering and enjoy the sheer pleasure of driving them... Seriously!!
Adamsın audi...👏👏👏👏
1 front vs 2 rear lol of course the front wins in winter ( i know they are allwheel drive but the power of the other 2 comes from the rear tyres) quattro is very good anyways
fun to drive bmw and mercedes 100% audi none
BMW shows me to be best. Very active and the AWD could be used as part of the driving experience! ❤
Braces wont help. Buy BMW.
Than bmw with half the engine hidden under the dash, better AUDI.
These tests depend on the weight of the vehicle, power, and tires. Not to mention the difference in conditions
Xdrive is more fun, because of the 40:60 split, while quattro is safer, especially on snowy roads.
quattro is 40:60 too by default but it can change if you lose control, older audis have 50:50 (before 2006)
Watching the video, it seems to be Audi biased in how the cars are being driven and the conditions of the test. You should do comparisons with the same driver on the same course. Why was the Audi always on the left? Seems like the right side had bigger bumps. Fact is, in dry conditions, the Audi plows through corners with heavy understeer. BMW's are perfectly balanced.
John P it's the same track 🙈 the cars are not actually driving at the same time. they just show them next to each other for comparison.
Bmw ist shit MB and Audi are better than bmw every test I watch i see how bmw sucks even in big programs like top gear bmw is shit
1. Mercedes
2. Audi
3. Bmw
This guy drove the MB and BMW so loose then puts his best out for the Audi.
Has anyone here complaining about tyres considered this test was most likely done on stock OEM tyres from each manufacturer?
driver can influence results too
if so the circle test would show other results. it looks expected based on the previous tests.
You can provoke slide in circle with bursts of power if you mean to. Filmed from top (cant see tyre slip), none of controls are filmed.
What America needs is a diesel A4 Quattro manual.
nice commercial for audi but not so good test for them, they didnt show the tires are same and too much accelerating bmw and mersedes on test
are the tyres same brand ?
I’m sure if I jerked the wheel too much with Quattro I would have massive understeer as well, because that’s driving in snow works. I’m from Colorado and I know this stuff because I have messed around in parking lots since being able to drive. Looks to me that the Merc and Bim have summer tires as evident by the immediate loss of traction. Torsen 3 isn’t this good.
Кваттро рулит!!!
Наглядный пример
Let me guess , this video was done by Audi ? Anyway do all the cars have the same tires ? Same engines? Plus it all depends how much throttle you give the car , I can clearly see that in bmw much more throttle is given , cant believe these tests 😂
Max G same engine ?
Ment to say size bro , just to make the test equal
Max G okey bro
Dmitrii Kharlamov , I understand and agree the Audi quattro is very affective , however the performance if the xdrive and 4matic shown here is a bit biased , I agree with you that the audi quattro system is superior , but not by as much of a difference as is shown here 👍
Haters are still gonna hate just admit Audi is the nr1 Car 😍😍
audi is the bst car i love audi
Look at the steering angle. The Audi uses minimal input but for some reason with the other two cars the driver uses aggressive steering inputs?
funny think last year I saw a $80K Q7 stuck in the snow while a freaking $25 Jeep drove around it.
Funny thing every winter i see how my 2k euro passat 2.8 b5.5 4motion(same as older quattro) drives around many newer bmw, jeep, mercedes...wich stuck in snow, cant move.
i got a b5.5 1.9 diesel 4 motion its insane how much grip this car got...
I have a B6 a4 quattro here. pulled an F150 4x4 out of a snow bank, had to laugh.
Everyone makes mistakes but Audi ist better
Спонсор теста концерн Audi! Покрышки одинаковы? Да и в вождении чувствуется разница.
i think audi is for me the best of this 3 options but this videos is just to much =)
The x drive is passive and does not work.
Unless these cars are all on the same tyres this means very little.
We have an Audi A4 and Benz ML 350 4Matic, and it’s true that the Audi is way better in snow/sleet conditions.
Quattro❤
I am mercedes-benz fun because of its perfection, performance, elegance, etc. But what is most important thing for vehicle you think speed is most important no way AWD is most important thing. For all of us who are not professional drivers with Audi quattro system you are gonna be a safe driver.
looks like the audi's traction control is playing a big part here and is probably while it looks slower and more tame
javy0820 I drive an Audi, traction control will be very moderate in such situations, it's all down to Quattro's intelligence.

I had my doubts from the start, but the last test was the last straw.
lol or xdrive and 4matic are half-assed wannabe competitors to Quattro. I can tell you that quattro is clearly superior in the real world.
