The small stone which comes with Chosera stones is not Nagura stone whatsoever but just a cheap artificial stone of which duty is just to remove debris from the stone surface to expose the abrasives. It doesn't make slurry at all. Thanks.

I don't think Nagura works for coarse stones under 2000 grit. It will work for 3000 to 6000 maybe.

Doc, thanks again for highlighting the reality of Nagura stones. The vast majority of people, even knowledgable ones, in both Europe and America believe that the red block supplied with every Chosera stone is a Nagura. Most of of us think that it is there to enhance the edge-cutting slurry generated by the big Chosera stone. As a suggestion, you could make a complete video showing how the different stones work. There is enormous ignorance about this subject in the West. Thanks for posting.

Your Chosera lineup is the same as mine. I ever owned Chosera 5000 stone. But it was a soft kind of stone and its surface was shaved off easily by taking an edge raised up. As you know Chosera 3000 stone is very hard and durable. Its single downside is its sharpening feel is a bit coarse. The natural white Mikawa Nagura stone produces dense and strong abrasive slurry from itself and matches Chosera 3000 stone very well to make it a bit finer grit. The Nagura makes a bit sharper edge. Thanks.

Thank you Wako-san. this is great information and helpful in gaining the right stones for shipping to United States.

TT is Tenjo Tokkyu, a super grade which contains colored layers and is aesthetically admirable. TB is Tenjo Betsujo, a regular glade. TB is all white and softer than TT. I prefer TB which is expected to produce slurry more easily. Thanks.

That believe is enhanced by the manufacturers calling "Nagura" what is actually not. The red stone supplied with Chosera is for cleaning and creating a slurry FROM the main stone grit, while the real Nagura is also creates slurry but from its OWN grit, which during the use becomes finer and finer. Thats the principal omission from the Naniwa advertize.

Thanks a lot. This made me search for UK knife sharpening suppliers and I came across one Eden Knife supplies, they sell their own version of Naniwa stones which are basically rebranded versions, they have the perfect set of stones for me for about $50. 240/800 and 2000/5000, seems perfect for me! I am very excited. All thanks to you. Before I would have to save up $50 for a single combination stone!

Hello and thank you for all your videos very helpful ! :)
What are the differences between the Nagura stone comes with stones Chosera and this natural stone japan ?
I ask you this in writing because I'm french and do not understand all the dialogues of the video :(
    thank you again
    Cedric

Indeed, that is for sure. But it's a start. My sharpening has improved a lot through virtuovice's advice and videos and by my own practice, I'm at a stage where I can hone any secondary edge to newspaper cutting cleanly, but this will mean I will be able to go to another level and be able to try new things such as reprofiling and convexing knives. I am very excited. Of course the quality will not be as great but they have good reviews so I am excited.

The 175g majiro is a beautiful Nagura. The mine of Nagura is already closed and we won't be able to get such a beautiful piece again. Mejiro seems to make the finest slurry. I will try my mejiro with my coming 10k natural stone. If you still have some money, I would recommend you Botan BB-1 142g which comprises the largest quartz particles and is the fastest. I believe you will see the difference from your mejiro. I think you can take it as a small investment for your future hobby. Thanks.

Wako, so the stone is a 5000 grit, and it can make a slurry on top of my 3000 grit chosera stone? Which one do you recommend to get? My sharpening system is 400/800/2000/3000 chosera system + white bark river compound stropping.

It's not a problem. I recently found out about some site called White Rabbit Japan, it is like a service that allows you to buy things from Japan, they handle the purchasing for a small fee they ship it to you. I recently bought a very very cheap hatchet from Rakuten, I am still waiting to receive it, it cost me 2500 YEN. If you search "Chuboya Hatchet Rakuten" on google you should find the link. I wonder what you think? I am only buying it to see how it is for such a super cheap knife.

Also I am planning on buying one of these soon, good quality waterstones can be fairly expensive (but worth the money) so I am waiting to buy a good whetstone first, maybe 300/600 1000/3000, I am still waiting to find the best deal online. I have only used very small waterstones, but they are so much nicer and faster. I imagine this slurry must help a lot. I have too little money and too many things I wish to buy! :(

Hello, I just received my nagura stone today from this website. The shipping was very fast and the store was very easy to work with. I got the 175g mejiro. I canʻt wait to try it out. I will use it with my 2000 chosera. I do not have the 3000 chosera so I hope it will work all right with the 2000. Thanks again for the vids.

Hi Wako, I'm currently using a natural Belgian Coticule with its own slurry stone, do you think the Nagura stone is compatible with the coticule?

I prefer natural stones instead artificial one, i had like 30+ but lost them when i got my car stoled years ago; now i have just some (sad).
Maybe for "difficult stone" mean that is very good with "some steel" and worse with many others (this is a peculiarity of natural stones it is always a pain when you start to work on a "new" steel, you never know what result come out -especially if you aim to a mirror finish result-).
Anyway thank you for the address, it is really nice to have

Thanks, I would only use it on those grits anyway. I cannot wait to order my first real waterstones, western stones really aren't very good. They're cheap, but really not that great. I hope the price of waterstones comes down a bit though, for synthetic ones they can be quite expensive. I found quite a good deal on some stones which means I can afford 4 stones for $50 instead of one for $50 so I will be able to at least try them out and get started. I know they will not be as good though. :)
