The Primitive Quartet began in 1973, when two sets of brothers, Reagan and Larry Riddle and Furman and Norman Wilson, carried a guitar and mandolin with them on a fishing trip to Fontana Lake. The Riddles had grown up on farms in Madison and Buncombe Counties, and the Wilson brothers, originally from Franklin, learned to sing shape notes from their father, who was a minister for fifty-seven years. The boys all sang at home and in church, but that night in Graham County was when they first sang in four-part harmony. After the fishing trip, with the encouragement of their parents and pastor, they began to sing together at area churches, calling themselves the Riddle-Wilson Quartet.
The Riddle and Wilson brothers went on the road as full-time musicians in 1978. Now called the Primitive Quartet, in honor of the old-time gospel singing that inspires them, the Riddles and Norman Wilson are joined by Randy Fox and Jeff Tolbert, and by Reagan and Larry’s brother Mike, who joined the group when Furman Wilson was called to the ministry.
They have recorded several albums and have toured throughout the United States and abroad. The group was the subject of a BBC documentary in 1984, and Singing News has listed them among the top five nominees for its readers’ Band of the Year award for several years consecutively. All but one of “the Primitives” live in Candler.

Great to hear Norman again, the p q is not same without him. Knew him since 1942, we were 7 not get 8yrs and his 1/2 sister Geneva went to college soon after and became our 12th grade home room teacher so we graduated 1952, he moved near my older bro. and took job same place for years, later married one of my older brothers daughters, I left for nsg. school and married a Dr. so our trails were bits of info about old friends all the years. Reagan was sweetheart of my older sister both now 88=
Larry also married one of my older brothers daughters Linda Hicks. Norman and Larry met my husband Dr. Cesar Larach in 1963 as we visited my bro. in Candler.At the time we had 3 children, we had one more. I have two children that are Doctors.an engineer and masters in Ed who married a preacher and have own church, which All these old friends established about 2017 or 18.
I love the song that Norman wrote my best friend I sing it some times in my church for Jesus is my best friend I love these men for they stand for Jesus may god bless you for ever

I like the primitive quartet a lot. We have been to a lot of there concerts in Tennessee.
They are my most favorite QUARTET singers. My soul is soothed by their music. My spirit is uplifted. My heart rejoices. Praise God for them. ❤❤❤❤I miss this one but I wouldn’t ask for him back. Heaven is his home. Jeff is a WONDERFUL addiction.

I have listened to this group for years on TH-cam. And, have had blessing after blessing from their music. This particular song featured the guitar player in a singing part. What talent he is blessed with to sing and play guitar. Thanks over and over. My heart is lifted toward Jesus as you sing, though it was years ago. I am blessed today with your songs years ago.
