    I love your work. I've learnt a lot. In my opinion, you go about making your videos in the right way. For a start, you don't waffle - you get straight to it. Secondly, you both tell and show people exactly what you are doing and how to do it - even to the extent of doing some animation. AS a consequence, your videos are very informative and I for one find them a pleasure to watch.

    Your little ladies look about as warm as our little ladies. We don't have as much snow on the ground as you have, but it is bone chilling cold here in Kentucky. We are headed for zero tonight. I don't know how the hens stand walking around in snow in their bare feet, but they certainly are glad to cozy up to the heat lamp at night.
    The piece is lovely, as usual. You do such beautiful work. I'm about to finish the table I've been working on, which I would never have had the courage to tackle without these. I've had a mishap on the finish, so I'm going to have to sand a coat off and redo it. Other than that, it is coming together beautifully, thanks to your tutoring.

    • @johnsonrestoration
      @johnsonrestoration  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are welcome! And yes, the chicks do not like walking in the snow! It's quite comical. All the animals don't seem to be bothered by the cold, as long as they are protected from the wind. It's amazing.
      Good luck on the table! I've never regretted doing something over.

    • @userunavailable3095
      @userunavailable3095 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, wind and wet are the two killers of livestock. They can handle a lot of cold if they are dry and have a windbreak. Our little birds cozy up to the foundation of the house on the west side, under the back porch. They are dry and sheltered there, and the angle of the sun is so low now that they can sun bathe there. Plus, the hawks can't see them there.

  • @jamesconner8275
    @jamesconner8275 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just discovered this channel and I've been stuck on it for hours. It has inspired me to get back to my chest lid. It's a cheap pine chest I found and I challenged myself to make it look like mahogany. I also challenged myself to give the lid top a glass-flat and gloss finish. After applying about thirty coats to the top and scraping it about every fifth coat I started having problems with the surface. I figured out that I was rushing and not letting the poly cure. So I let it sit for about six months. Yesterday I wet sanded it with and orbital sander and 400 grit. It came out great. There is still more to go, but Thomas's videos have shown that it just takes patience. Think about putting a mirror finish on pine construction-grade plywood and you'll get the picture.

    I just finished restoring my parents 1914 Hoosier. It had sat in the basement for year, so the dampness had damaged the bottom, back, and bottom edges of the side oak veneer plywood. I flipped it over and re-laminated the side oak plywood bottom edges using your type methods with white glue in the gaps, plastic, wood blocks and clamps. The cheaper 3-ply plywood on the back and bottom surface layers sperated from the heavier core. Being that I didn't (couldn't safely) disassemble it to clamp it. I dremeled many 8th inch holes and injected in white glue, plastic, wood blocks, then pressed it flat using 200 pounds of pea gravel in 16 heavy cotton old lead shot bags. Once that ply was flat, then built a sub frame to mount big casters using 3/4" x 6" oak boards. Once this was finished, I flipped it upright and re-laminated the top side of the bottom ply placing the gravel bags inside the base cabinet of the Hoosier sandwiching it flat while being supported from below by the new sub frame. It turned out real good without taking any of it apart!

    Nice repair as usual. It's actually a really beautiful piece of furniture. I imagine it might have been made in the 1930s? Maybe 40s? Hard to tell. Plywood cores were around since at least 1900. It kind of looks like it's been bleached-out a fair bit by the sun, too. Lots of work went into this piece (both originally, and to repair it). It's nice to see that someone wanted to have it fixed.
    Also, yellow (and white) wood glue does have a bit of gap-filling qualities. One woodworker on TH-cam made glue tests and some of the sloppier fitting joints held up better than the super tight ones due to the glue. It's obviously not the best glue for gap-filling, but you probably were best to have used more glue than less.

      Thanks! and yes, pre WW2 on the age. I have never seen such a bad job of a substrate for the veneer. I have no idea what they were thinking. Luckily, the new house where we delivered it has climate (as in humidity) controls year round. So if the glue does have some gap filling ability it made last for awhile. I'm keeping my fingers crossed

    Great job!....Nothing like rediscovering the hidden beauty of a workpiece.....Just like the original craftsman intended it to look. I am curious as to why you used PVA glue vs hide glue for the veneer. Thank you for sharing

    Who gag when Tom said he had to take a part the entire chest just to flatten the sides?! Okay, let's finish watching but first let me make some popcorn. This restore project is going to be good!

    @6:29 inspired! The dog is very sensible in insisting that you provide ear protection.
