    I just gave my girls their first half gallon of sugar syrup today. It’s been windy as heck yet the temps are in the mid 50’s . Girls are flying and bringing in pollen. Tonight’s lows are gonna be in the upper teens . By next weekend I will begin placing pollen substitute patties in the hives . Man I can’t wait to get into them and make at least four five frame splits. Anticipation, driving me nuts!

      Hey Brian, It seems like my 1st year I grafted 7 cells and I was super excited about it. Then it came to getting them mated and only 3 of them were able to do that. So keep in mind that just because you have a set number of cells doesn't mean you gain the same number of hives, those queens need mated and that lowers the percentage slightly.

      Hi Jason I'm wondering about the new feeder nipples if thay would be good for mating nucs < to much feed is a problem and I don't know how much feed thay will distribute. I built 17 new 3way 10 framers and haven't finished lids yet .can u give me any input on this please thanks bud

    • @JCsBees
      @JCsBees  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @mark miller Yes, my plan is to use the nipple jar feeder for mating nucs. In the past they worked well until they started leaking but with Castle Hives new nipples they should work great once again. I just drill a 1/4" hole for feeder jars then plug off with a rubber cork when not feeding. Good luck!!

    Jason, thanks for the video. I have bees at 2 locations and one is about 7 miles the way the crow flies away from my home. I inspected there Friday when it was about 68 degrees and one hive is so full of bees including drones! I can normally make splits the middle of March with no problem. I don’t think this hive can wait until the end of February! It’s full of nectar also. A very large red Maple 100 ft away is bursting open also. I wish you were near, I honestly believe you could have mated Queens by the middle of March! I so surprised at what I found with us having temps in the 20s at night so recently. I don’t know what’s going on but so far it looks great! I did miss Ladybug in the video! Seeing her snoring is just not what we’re use to. I think most folks have gotten fond of her like I have so next week, please film while she’s awake! I hope ole man winter leaves your area soon!

    Great video. Just about every year where I am it is Mother's Day Weekend that hives will swarm. Meaning the bees know that is the optimal time to rear a new queen. Pretty ironic it happens on "Mother's" Day. I try to get splits and queens going that week before Mother's Day. Which is basically the first week of May. I am in NYC in the Northeast, so we are just about on par weatherwise for Queen rearing.

    Have you ever considered running a breeder queen timing box? Sometimes also called a queen rearing timing box.
    What do you do with the extra queens you don't use or sell.
    Do you use mini mating Nucs, or do your queens just go into 5 frame Nucs? This might be an idea for a video to add to the series this spring.

    • @dagandreassen3115
      @dagandreassen3115 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are always get to use. Sell as virgin queen's or mated for a better price ( x 4 times more) or selling in a small nuke. A queen is always valuable to have. A virgin queen you need to get sold within 2-4 days otherwise it's to late and you try to make a small nuke and let her do her mating flight.

    • @JCsBees
      @JCsBees  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Fred, Great questions! I have not used a timing box, I have gotten pretty good at finding the right aged larva and adding another step just just adds more time. Keep in mind when my queen rearing starts so does my calving season so I have to keep things simple or I get overloaded. All the extra queens I sell.
      I introduce virgins in 5 frames nucs, I like them over mini nucs because I can grade the queens performance easier based on her brood pattern. These would be some great questions for another video. Thanks!!

    • @eddevault4604
      @eddevault4604 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Chris….boil them in water…dip them out with a screened dipper…clean with Q-Tips….when boiling in the water dip off the wax that floats….

    • @JCsBees
      @JCsBees  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Chris Handy I have not tried the method Ed mentioned but I have boiled them and all that did was make the outside of the cups sticky. I ended up switching over to the nicot cell cups and cup holders, I replace the cups with new after a queen emerges from it. With the nicot cups you get like 1000 per bag and I think re-using cups lowers acceptance of the larva by the workers but that's just my 2 cents.

      An eye dropper will not work. Here's why, when the eggs turns to larva the end of the larva not sitting in royal jelly has vents that are open so it can breath and it must be transferred in the same fashion....with the vents down in the jelly it will die.

This summer I raise some of my own queens and have several in colonies right now getting ready to go into winter. Next spring I want to start raising queens for profit as well as my own use. I know I will need equipment like mating nucs and hives for starters and finishers. I have an incubator which I used this year. How early... Cannot start any queen rearing until there are MATURE DRONES to mate with. Drones need at least three weeks to mature after emergence. So keep an eye out during your first inspections for capped drone cells. Then be on the lookout for the first emerged drones and then add three weeks maturing time before even thinking about grafting. Keeping track of when you are seeing the first drones each year is a good bee management practice. When you might see your first drones in the hive will vary depending upon your location and current local weather conditions. Once you have mature drones you are good to go but one last concern is making sure the cell starter is very strong, well fed etc, and weather conditions are favorable (good forage and clear skies make for well fed queen cell larvae). Getting capped cells/virgins in nucs and mated in very early spring tend to be at the mercy of the weather. You can always have very unseasonable weather (colder than normal) and excessive rains in the spring which don't bode well for virgin mating. Nothing is worse than making up nucs with queen cells and then having them parish due to a long cold spell or two weeks of rainy weather resulting in a poorly mated or unmated queen. Great series on queen rearing!

    Queen cells look like morels. Coincidence? Maybe not.

      They sure do! I actually think the queen cells help my eyes adjust to the mushrooms, lol
