  • This is Track 13 on The Who's Album - Who's Next. Recorded Live at the Young Vic on April 26, 1971. Although "Water" made regular appearances in The Who's stage act in 1970 & 1971, it remained unreleased until a studi version of the song appeared on the B-Side of '5.15' in september 1973. This live version is previously unreleased.

    The Isle of Wight 1970 version is best, that whole concert is on youtube and it’s amazing!

      It`s not the whole concert unfortunately there`s around 30mins of footage lost.

      Footage missing 1921/Amazing Journey/Sparks/Eyesight To The Blind/Tommy Can You Hear Me/Smash The Mirror/Substitute/Naked Eye. Although Naked Eye can be found on the multi billed dvd.

      I think the version from the 1970 Tanglewood concert is even better, the sound quality is definitely so. That entire Tanglewood show is phenomenal.

    I remember when I first heard this as a bonus track on Who's Next, and realised this couldn't make it onto the original LP. That says something for how good the band was then - terrific stuff!

    just amazing that it took them a decade to get this good... most bands fizzle out long before that.... This band was still getting better.... Roger's vocals were still progressing.. the writing was absolutely progressing..

    Absolutely one of their best albums. Pete is amazing, Keith.. well who was better? Roger, probably one of the best Rock and Roll singers, and then there is John. Not a better bass player before or after.. Truly an amazing band.

    Amazing song. Though I much rather prefer listening to the Isle of Wight version. Watching them kill it on stage like that is just mind blowing.

    It took about 10 years before I heard this again. Great song. Pete really shreds on it and I love his tone. Roger really delivers and it is arguably his finest vocal performance on tape. Keith is great as always. John's performance is noticeably average.

    The Odds and Sodds version is cleaner then this, but the drums on this particular version are pretty epic in comparison (at least I think so). Makes you feel alot more like dancing.

    @rnargi I think Pete had it mostly figured out; it's just that no one else understood 'Lifehouse' as a concept, and Kit Lambert wasn't there to help make sense of it for the others.

    No question that there is more material on this album than on 2 or 3 albums from pop bands today....as much as I like the Beatles and the early stones... Does any other lbum from that era really compare to Who's next?

    Very true. I still own and listen to my Who's Next vinyl I bought new in 1971. This is definitely not on the original album, thank goodness. It would otherwise ruin what I consider to be the best Who album ever.
