    I use the trimmer arm on my Matt Mini Lathe with the spade-looking cutter bit it came with to cut out my center diameters, (hogs the wax out really fast) and the brass mm gauge in the inside of a corresponding size ring sizer hoop to make sure I got the opening right for the size I need. Then I use the spade bit to cut the outer diameter down to rough size. Next I use the trimmer arm like a tool rest on a wood lathe just outside the length of the wax cylinder and different gravers and tools like you are doing to cut my outside patterns. Mind you, I have to hold the mini lathe in both hands while I do this... Don't have a way to hold it otherwise. I do most of my waxes by running wax with an alcohol lamp and dental tools, but when you need a very precise band or circle, this is the tool you wantl!!! I love my mini lathe!!! Thanks for some great ideas and techniques!

      Hello, thanks for watching, we would be more than happy to ask our Jewelry Tech Team if they have any tips or suggestions for assembling the benchmate to the flexible shaft. Thanks for the support!

    • @RioGrande1944
      @RioGrande1944  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, we spoke to our Tech Team and they said that this is what they would recommend:
      1.Remove the ring clamp from the bench mate bracket
      2. Install the adapter www.riogrande.com/product/wolf-flex-shaft-adapter-collar-for-grs/700897 in the bracket that you removed the ring clamp from.
      3. Insert your #30 hand piece and tighten into place.
      We hope this is helpful and feel free to reach out with any other questions or concerns.

    With casting isn't there a 10% loss of volume? How are you taking shrinkage into consideration during this process?

    • @RioGrande1944
      @RioGrande1944  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Hello Gina, Thank you for your question. We asked our Jewelry Tech Team for their insight, here is what they shared: "Calculating shrinkage is tricky business with wax carving. For rings, we’ve found that making the ring ¼ size larger works well for achieving the target size after shrinkage. Stone settings can be even trickier. We typically make the setting in the wax so the stone will drop in without any pressure from our finger, but not loose. In other words, we don’t want the stone to have any side-to-side motion; just drop in easy. When the piece is cast, the setting will shrink to a slightly smaller size than the stone, but we have to clean it up and polish a bit anyway, which will enlarge the setting so the stone will fit. This method makes sure that the stone will fit very precisely with no play." Let us know if there are any other questions we can answer. Hope this helps!

      For a one-of-a-kind piece, I make the ring size that I want the finished product to be. The metal will shrink 1%. By the time I tap the ring round on my mandrel, and sand and polish the inside, it’s the right size.
