I remember Li'l Red Riding Hood" as a giant hit from the summer of 1966. There are only a few videos of Sam the Sham performing this one, so I am posting it for historical purposes. This is from a TV performance where he performed two songs that were very abbreviated versions. This one has been filled out so it contains more of his time on camera. Betty Boop was not my idea, it was added long ago and far away. Read more interesting info about the song and its history over at Puget Sound Media: qzvx.com/2020/...

Fans of classic oldies....Lisa Leonard Dalton, the dancing "Sloopy Girl," has revealed the name of the studio in which her 1975 dance with Rick Derringer was filmed. People have wondered about it for many years. Now Lisa answers the question in this video: th-cam.com/video/ViEnk7Rk2ZQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=G152dynHn2gpRqzM

I turned 8 in the summer of '66 and came down with the measles. Had to stay in bed in a darkened room for a week or two with just a radio to listen to. Guess what was playing every other hour along with "They're Coming To Take Me Away"?!! 55 years later and these songs are still seared into my brain! Um, good times??

Liz ... those were 2 of my favorites as well! I had a similar thing happen (I had Mono in Jr. High) late spring thru the entire summer of 70(?) I wasn't able to do much but lay in bed. I remember The Jackson 5, specifically Michael Jackson singing "I Want You Back" on Ed Sullivan Show, and I was amazed at how such a young child was so talented🎵🎶

Showed this song to my son while lodging at the Great Wolf Lodge Water Park. He was amused.
When we first got to resort, they said we could get free wolf ears at gift shop. When we got there, they said we have to give a big howl to earn our ears.
Now this song will bring great memories for my family and I.

My sister had the 45 rpm record exactly like the one by MGM shown playing on the turntable. I think it was the first non-Beatles record I remember her getting. She turned 10 that year and I turned 7.
I wish I had a dollar for every time we played "Red" AND the terrific flip side, "Love Me Like Before". Great times and awesome memories!

After leaving the music business, Sam worked in Mexico as an interpreter and as a mate on small commercial boats in the Gulf of Mexico.[9] Sam later became a motivational speaker and still makes occasional concert appearances. He was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2016.
    Personal life
Sam married Louise Smith on August 28, 1959 in Dallas, Texas. They had one son named Dimitrius Samudio, born on May 28, 1963, in Dallas. They divorced on May 16, 1968, in Dallas.
Most sources refer to Samudio's ancestry as Mexican-American.[10][11][12] However, a 1998 article by the Chicago Tribune described Samudio as being of Basque/Apache descent.[13] In a 2007 conversation with music writer Joe Nick Patoski, Samudio described his grandparents fleeing the Mexican Revolution and settling in Texas where his family supported themselves working in the cotton fields.

Samudio resurrected The Pharaohs in 1963. The new lineup was Samudio (vocals/organ), Dave Martin (bass), Ray Stinnet (guitar), Jerry Patterson (drums), and Butch Gibson (saxophone). They made their debut with the novelty number "Haunted House" and signed up with the MGM music label. The follow-up songs "Ju Ju Hand" and "Ring Dang Do" were minor chart successes. The band scored their greatest smash hit with the wonderfully raucous "Wooly Bully," which sold over three million copies and stayed on the Billboard Top 40 charts for 18 weeks (the song peaked at #2 on the pop charts). "Wooly Bully" was named Record of the Year for 1965 by "Billboard" magazine. The bubbly "Li'l Red Riding Hood" likewise did very well; it peaked at #2 on the Billboard pop charts for two weeks straight. The group went on to record more enjoyably frothy novelty singles, but none of them were as successful as either "Wooly Bully" or "Li'l Red Riding Hood." The band appear as themselves in the musical When the Boys Meet the Girls (1965). Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs disbanded in 1967.

In 1966 Sam and his boys arrived at the dedication of a new supermarket in Chicago. Me and my friends rode our bikes and the crowd was about 500 people. Sam arrived in a limo, he and his bandmates threw pennies out the windows to disperse the crowd so they could exit the vehicle. They sang this song and Wooly Bully. In less than 5 minutes they ran back into the limo. Some quick bucks. I think I got about 4 pennies that day, and ran to the local grocery store for penny candy. A penny was worth about a dime or quarter in those days.

Had a blond in my Karate class. She reminded me of what I pictured Little Red to look like. So, in class, I walk up and sing this song to her. Of course I had her by 20 years. She looked at me like the fool I was and I realized, she had never heard the song. Where is the door?

    Howl
What's that I see walkin' in these woods?
Why, it's Little Red Riding Hood.
Hey there, Little Red Riding Hood
    You sure are lookin' good
You're everything a big, bad wolf could want...
    Listen to me
    Little Red Riding Hood
I don't think little big girls should
Go walkin' in these spooky ol' woods alone.
    Howl
    What big eyes you have
The kind of eyes that drive wolves mad.
So just to see that you don't get chased
I think I ought to walk with you for a ways.
    What full lips you have
They're sure to lure someone bad.
So until you get to Grandma's place
I think you ought to walk with me and be safe.
I'm gonna keep my sheep suit on
Til I'm sure that you've been shown
That I can be trusted, walking with you alone.
    Howl
    Little Red Riding Hood
I'd like to hold you if I could
But you might think I'm a big, bad wolf, so I won't.
    Howl
What a big heart I have
The better to love you with.
    Little Red Riding Hood
Even bad wolves can be good.
    I'll try to keep satisfied
Just to walk close by your side.
Maybe you'll see things my way
Before we get to Grandma's place.
    Little Red Riding Hood
    You sure are lookin' good
You're everything a big, bad wolf could want.
    Howl
    I mean baaaaa, baaaaaa, baaaaa...

In the Heat of the Night (1967) -- this was supposed to be the song in that "Foul Owl on the Prowl" cafe scene, and that's how it was choreographed, but apparently Sam's people wanted too much money so Quincy Jones put together a mock-up song (Foul Owl) that fit the sequence. Imagine all the money Sam could've made off "L'il Red Riding Hood" over the years if it was forever associated with that classic film.

Why wasn't fowl on the prowl played more on local radio stations? It sounds like a hit song 🎵, also agree that Sam's song , little red , would have been perfect in the dinner scene.
