The tune is old, sometimes called "Londonderry Air." (Sometimes referred to by wags as "London Derriere.") The words are by Frederic Weatherly, who was English. Whether you are told it's a girl singing to her lover or a father or mother singing to a son depends on the sex and age of the singer you ask. (And can you blame singers for claiming that their performance is appropriate?)
