  • CHARLAMAGNE THA GOD: "A'ja Wilson was the biggest thing when she came out of South Carolina ... and she didn't get all of that."
BILL MAHER: "So what do you attribute that to? I mean, you're saying that's racism?"
CHARLAMAGNE THA GOD: "No, I'm not saying it's racist. I'm just saying that I think A'ja Wilson has a point, and I think sometimes when, you know, black women say certain things, we should listen, especially her because I'm not in her shoes."
BILL MAHER: "But why was Serena Williams such a big star? Because people like that. They didn't not watch her because she was black, right?"
    CHARLAMAGNE THA GOD: "Yeah."
BILL MAHER: "Okay, so where are we with this?"
CHARLAMAGNE THA GOD: "I don't know!"

Clark hits long threes, passes like Stockton and lifted a program that is usually not a power 5 program to back to back NCAA finals. And she doesn’t look like an elite athlete so her popularity can be attributed to a combination of being the “every person” that people can relate too, we are attracted to the type of game she plays (hybrid Steph/ Stockton), and the under dog element of being a dominant player on a traditionally not dominant basketball program. It’s the perfect storm and in many ways is the Larry Bird story in 1979/ 1980. It has all the same attributes of why so many people gravitated towards Larry Legend.

Not take a stance charla to be more marketable is weird... but we talking around the fact that CC is popular now because she is the great white hope, broke some records in college but never won anything.
This drought will continue in the WNBA and it alludes to the her fan bases just feeling entitled to the rest of the league just falling over/ giving her something that is unearned.

Oh please. Name one female player -- black or white -- who has singlehandedly brought in more (overnight!) interest and ticket sales in the WNBA than Caitlin Clark? Male basketball fans who used to openly mock the WNBA as a joke are now regularly watching the ESPN highlights of the Indiana Fever games. Making a ton of dough for the league and ironically for all her haters - that's why Clark deserves everything she has EARNED.

Did he crumble? Just the creator of this content’s view. Respectfully, what Charlemagne argued is her resume is a college resume, not a professional one. There are women of all races that have great professional resumes who haven’t shared the limelight or financial gain that Clark has. She’s the best womens outside shooter I’ve ever seen but as someone who follows both men’s and women’s sports of all type, the average fan will always clamor the confusion of giving accolades to someone who hasn’t done anything yet. And I will add something else that will be very unpopular but it’s completely accurate. Most men were insulted by taking Clark’s remarkable college records and comparing them to the men’s game. Anyone who is truly a basketball fan of all genders knows that Clark played all four years of her college career. Something she didn’t want to do but WNBA rules forced her to do. The records she then broke were Stephan Curry’s and Pete Maravich’s. Each only played 3 years of record tally. Curry left for the NBA after his junior year. NCAA rules at the time prohibited first-year students from playing at the varsity level, so Maravich played for LSU’s freshman team in 1966-67 and scored a monstrous 43.6 points per game but those points were not included in his historical record. Apples and oranges. If Curry was forced to stay in college as Clark was, Clark wouldn’t have come close to the record. If Maravich’s freshman year points counted, his record would still be standing. I’m happy Clark’s contribution has garnered more support for the WNBA but the records didn’t need the embellishment. They stood strong on their own merit.
