I remember my senior year in high school I got out of class at 12:30 PM and had nothing to do at home so found this soap opera. I had no cable back then and limited tv channels. There was nothing such as a boring episode as the story line would switch back and forth. Marissa Tomei and Meg Ryan got their acting careers started with this soap at very young ages.
My parents watched Y&R and ATWT everyday. I came for lunch one day and my Dad was all upset because the show changed to this theme. He called it ATWT does Lost In Space I liked it.
Stay tuned for Capitol next on most of these CBS stations. Ladies'sweaters by Tony Lambert!Fashions by Hushpuppies! This is Dan Region inviting you to join us again for As The World Turns!
@@TheDeadmanRules I don't like the 1988 version. With this version you get an "otherworldly" feel that I think PGP was going for. With the later version it sounds so fake
Hearing this takes me back to summertime as a child and my mother telling us to “go outside, my story is coming on. Go on…GIT! Go play!” And she’d lie out on the couch, with her white slip-on, open-toed house shoes, with red toenails l and house coat, for first ATWT and then Capitol or Guiding Light. 😂
When Dan Region first started doing announcements for "ATWT," he would say, "Stay tuned for 'Search for Tomorrow,' next on most of these CBS stations."
As The World Turns was never taped at CBS Television City in Hollywood. In 1982,it was taped at CBS's old Monroe Theater studio and from 1986-Jan 2000,studios 41 & 42 at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York, then the former NBC Brooklyn Studios (former Another World,Somerset and Texas studios) for its final 10 years.
Yes and she also was head writer for SEARCH FOR TOMORROW in the last 70s. She actually wrote Mary Stuart off the show because she felt the character of Jo was no longer relevant. Fan backlash led to Stuart being re-hired.
She was actually executive producer and was hell bent on driving out most of the veteran actors in favor of having a younger cast - she even told Eileen Fulton this when her contract was being renegotiated - so she ended up driving away Eileen plus Don Mac Laughlin & Helen Wagner. The only reason Eileen returned while Ms. Bunim was still EP was she read they were considering killing off the Lisa character so she could do the proposed death scenes. Don and Helen returned late 1985 early 1986 well after Ms. Bunim (thankfully) left ATWT.
The year 1982 was NOT a good one for ATWT. Mary Ellis Bunim was NOT good for the show and the Dobsons wrote storylines that were stupid...like Kim getting married to Nick Andropolous and following him to Greece. Kathryn Hays stated that was the only time she ever got hate mail. The show didn't get back on track until Doug Marland took over the writing in the mid eighties and when he passed away in 1993 the show never recovered.
Bunim upgraded ATWT's production during this period. And the Dobsons wrote strong storylines: Gunnar revealed as heir to the Stenbeck fortune, Dee Stewart standing trial for Dr. John Dixon's "murder," Steve/Betsy/Craig triangle. Much better produced, more tightly plotted and exciting than the Marland/Caso period.
HODJ PODJ but the marland/caso period made it more exciting. kim's stalker, Lily is not lucinda's daughter, margo turning off casey's life support and other stuff.
Agreed. I don't like to speak ill of the dead but per Eileen Fulton's autobiography, Ms. Bunim blatantly said to her when renegotiating her contract she was fixing on removing all of the veteran actors (e.g. Eileen, Don, Helen et al) by featuring them less and less until they would fade away without being missed while just focusing on the the younger cast. Eileen did try in vain to fight against this plan since it would alienate folks who were loyal viewers for years; she also said she tried to get them to write some scenes similar to that which Joan Collins was able to do on "Dynasty" - and Joan is only a few months older than Eileen no less! Due to this she felt led to pursue focusing on her nightclub act so she left the series; the only reason she returned was she happened to catch an article on the soaps a few months later that her replacement as Lisa was not getting on with the rest of the cast so the producers were considering killing Lisa. She then was on the West Coast and promptly called the production office which confirmed that. She said "no one will believe it unless I'm doing the death scenes" so she returned to the series, remaining until the end of its run, save a few absences due to illness. In the meantime Ms. Bunim left the show.
This theme “The World Turns On and On” was the highlight of my childhood during summers off from school and holiday breaks. I barely remember the 1956-1981 theme and I was born in 1973! ATWT was my Grandma’s regular daily routine when she would come home for her lunch hour.
ATWT had been #1 practically uninterrupted for 20 years until about 1978. It is only after that point that they felt pressure not only from ABC but from prime-time soaps to play catch-up as well.
This theme always gives me chills...
I don’t get how it doesn’t for all the people I ask. Remember this!!! Lame. Well at least it works for us!
Wow my birth year, and I'm gonna turn 40 this month. Great slow melody and tune!!!!!
40 years ago, this theme debuted on As the World Turns.
81-93
I miss you Grandma!!!!

This form of television is lost forever. The announcer introducing the program and promoting products. Sadly, you can only find it here.
So so true…….definitely sad, tv was at its best back in these days
Loved the Elliot Lawrence theme!
Best by far
This is Dan Region inviting you to join us again Monday for As The World Turns! Always enjoyed hearing Mr. Region's voice when I could watch ATWT.

I liked it.
Your folks must have been fans of the Charles Paul theme which aired from 1956-1981.
@@ericpurkey7502 and even that got updated in 1973/74 when the Organ and piano went out of the style.
Yeah, it was quite jarring when they switched to this theme.
My Dad hated this theme. He rthought it was "corny" as he put it
I thought it was an otherworldly theme. I liked the prior Charles Paul theme and the one from the 90's - very soothing.

This theme music was revised in mid 1984.
Willie Seals and again in 1988.
I think the 1988 version was all synthesizer not just the glissando. The drums and cymbols may have been electronic.

Similar to what I remember back in 86, just more basic
Yes. Jill Diamond's version.
Not to offend the first announcer for this show but in my opinion Dan Region is the best announcer in As The World Turns history!
Aw, Dan Region.

She was executive producer from 1981 until 1984. She had previously produced fellow P&G soap Search for Tomorrow.

"'Guiding Light'"
Search for tommorow went to Nbc. Capitol took its spot for 5 years than 87 bold and beautiful debut still on
First grade at my babysitter’s house. Wow😳❤️
Mary Ellis Bunim died in 2004 at the age of 57. She was only 36 years old when she EP of ATWT.
She also created The Real World for MTV
I was mine and I am kinda on memory lane living on Dubuque in Austin wow
2010 is when the world stop turning for as the world turns 😢
They should have kept the music playing til the fade out. I have no clue why they prematurely faded the music out prior to the fade out.
Please Upload the ATWT 1981 New Opening when it debuted.
Stay tuned for "Guiding Light", next on most of these CBS stations.
Mary Ellis-Bunim was also an Executive Producer for Search for Tomorrow

Man, I miss this AND Capitol!!!
Actually the credits say executive producer - not writer.
This theme song makes me queasy.
This aired on 3/29/82(the day Capitol bowed) or later.
wow may ellis bunim was a writer for this show back then?? interesting then went on to do the real world

@@JD_ATX That should have taught her better than to try that with any of the core ATWT characters.

Sounds similar to what I'm used to, just more basic and unrefined.

As the creator/producer/enabler of *The Real World,* she's also why MTV gave up on music videos.
Never liked this theme. I liked the old theme it sounded classic and classy
They had no choice but to change it, p&g soaps ratings were lower than abc soaps.
