- Giving Alec's Allen Scythe it's first proper run up to the top of the paddock and back again. It ran pretty well, the smoke is due to burning old oil off the exhaust. It didn't even try to run itself into the pond with Alec in tow, contrary to reputation.

It's overheating mate!!!! You are missing the cooling fan and shroud! I am in the US and have 2 of these same engines, and they both have fans and shrouds! DO NOT keep running it this way--the smoke indicates bad overheating on a 2 stroker! It is also losing power when hot---typical of overheating! Give this old bloke a break or it will end up seized! Take it from a British engine collector in the 'states! You are killing that poor old Villiers!

You should run an air cooled engine with its metal shroud or you risk frying the engine!
Nice piece of kit from the days when health and safety wasn't a topic. I remember one of the 1960's models was prone to going up in flames when it got too hot.
I remember having to operate an Allen sythe 20 + years ago, brilliant machine; but the handles were set so low, it was fine if you were 5 ft tall otherwise you had to stoop just the way you are; thanks for posting.

I like all that smoke. Old 2 strokes need lots of oil and that one appears not to have a fan.

Anyone have one of these for sale or junked one for give away? really neeed somekind of walk behind sickle bar for mowing hay on my remote Ranch in AK. They are impossible to find here.

Hi, Just wondered if you know what shades of colours a allen scythe should be painted int?
I remember friends of ours owned one some 45 years ago in good condition. It was predominantly green and the lettering on the wheels was painted yellow. Deffo no red

Either too much oil in the mix or the wrong oil
That amount of smoke is not normal maybe as it must be running far to hot with no fan duct to cool it it is burning off years of old oil build up in the silencer
you use extra virgin olive oil xx

As the owner of this particular beast - to clarify. It wasn't overheating - the timing was off. I had the flywheel off and hadn't nipped it back up tightly enough (not called a hammer on fitting for nothing!) so it had slipped gradually out. Re-set it and it was fine. Ref. the smoking, this is now running on alkylate fuel which tends to clean everything out and give heavy smoking whilst doing so. The covers are back on and it is running perfectly, having done some heavy cutting.
