John I always put some glue on the part to be glued but I always leave 2 small spaces where I put some superglue. The superglue is just to hold the part intact while the woodglue dry.
Nice, but you should shorten or remove the exhaust stacks from your plans as they are a real danger to a child’s eyes. I make them about the height of the cab roof for safety.

Titebond has a Thick and quick glue that is really good.
Have you ever tried table salt to lessen the slide around factor?
