I love British Middle Ages royalty!👏 I’m going to settle in and watch these in order of kingship. (Which is how it seems they’re presented)! Thank you!

William the Conquerer , Duke of Normandy , brought the French culture ( I do not mean the light ) to the British Isles. The court spoke French and the rule was in French. It is logical for the Normans were completely francised and vassals to the King of France. William the Conquerer is much more than a King and is a major European character.

I’m a patron of a channel where a professional historian reacts to content (all views route back to original content creator in terms of monetary benefit) and I’m going to recommend he cover this channel, since he specializes in British history. Keep bringing us this level of quality content and you’ll be very successful. Thanks for what you do and I wish you the best!

I honestly think it's kind of a mess, really. The narration and script is in dire need of editing, it is needlessly verbose and often confusing, and more than once uses words incorrectly. I can hear that this guy is young, so I'm sure he'll get much better as time goes by, but I must say I was disappointed with the material after reading all this praise in the comments. Please take it as constructive criticism nothing else.

Harold had already fought up north at Stamford Bridge, so was coming down south to meet up with William. If the northern fight hadn't have happened William would not have become a king

    • @paulprice1705

Yep but also, Harold was stupid to not stop and rest for 2-3 days before engaging after all that travel and fighting prior. Stupid.

Regarding the evidence of 'place'. Much indicates that William landed at Bulverhythe, east of Pevensey - where the landing was historically said to have taken place. I, amongst many others, believe that the battle actually took place at Crowhurst, a small town to the west of Battle - the town said, officially, to be the site of the Battle of Hastings. Living close to Hastings, I have done the 'tour' of the Battle site and enjoyed the experience, but the amount of historical evidence discovered was - minimal - to say the least. William swore to build an abbey at the site of the battle. There is an abbey at Battle, but ruins of an abbey have also been discovered at Crowhurst. I understand there is a major road scheduled to be built over the grounds of the probable true battle site at Crowhurst and this is causing bitterness as there has been no chance to excavate th. And of coursee area. Chances are any remains of interest will be lost for ever. I am just a 'dabbler' in this area of history and no expert. If I have got anything wrong, I do apologise.

William wasn’t the 1st French Norman to occupy the monarchy and hold sway over it. Earlier Saxon king Edward the Confessor’s wife was Norman and Edward’s court counselors were also from Normandy. By the time William the Conqueror invaded England, the English monarchy was already heavily influenced by Normans.

William may seem brutal nowadays but that's because we are judging him based on today's morals. For the XI century it was considered normal and expected for dukes and kings to conquer more land and subdue the locals. It's quite a humiliating ending for him though, to be left dead for days stripped naked.

@@tommyjohnson6410they weren’t black I’ve argued with you on another video about the kings skin colour but even if they where black just saying a black women can marry a white man and have a child who is white so if the kings and queens of England where black he could still be related still

@JJTHEARTI3T Bro you sound crazy. I have shown evidence. There were no white nobility. Swarthy means dark complexion you can't have a white parent or grandparents if you're Swarthy or Burnett its not possible. The black Douglas, the black prince were black people. To be Niger or Dubh means both parents are black.

How's this for a conspiracy theory? William had an uncle who "died" a few years before Will was born named William So Robert called his son after his dead brother - a practice still observed in Norway today. But it wasn't William who died in 1025 but his cousin Edward Atheling and William was slipped in to fill the gap. Fast forward to 1051 when Will visited fake Edward and learnt that the doddery old man was in fact his supposedly dead uncle. Not knowing how the English system worked, Will decided that he was entitled to the throne of England when fake Edward died.. Through the wonders of modern science we can now test this theory as the body of "William" has remained buried in Fecamp Abbey since 1025 ( having been moved once in 1717) now al I need
is a few thousand of pounds ( 37 Euros, 6 USD) and permissions to dig up "William" and check the DNA of Emma against the body dug up. ( Emma's bones are in Winchester Cathedral) The relationship between the sets of bones will be either mother/ son or aunt/ nephew. Who's for contributing?

People like to demonize William as this brutal killer. But you could easily say the same thing about Edward III who is widely considered one of England's greatest kings. Edward's armies committed horrible atrocities in Scotland and France.

Pronunciations need work -- too bad to hear an American voice instead of a British one. E.g., Aethling - long a or AA (ae diphthong use in OE). But clear useful information of historic figures.
