UPS lost a set of dishes that I sold for just under $500 S&H included. I had added insurance and signature confirmation. Get this... UPS said they delivered it to a UPS freight truck driver, and HE signed for it and it was NEVER scanned again or found. After almost 2 months, and a million messages and calls between myself, the customer, and UPS I FINALLY got reimbursed. Thank God the customer was so very kind and understanding, It was a horrible, timely mess. The customer (Dean H.😊) and I built such a rapport in those 2 months, we still say hello on holidays through eBay messages. 😊 We trauma bonded, I think. 😂

Hey CWP. It was a Fed Ex driver who was relatively new. He actually made the stops (according to the GPS record) but didn’t want to walk up to the door. His supervisor questioned him about it and he immediately resigned. Fed Ex rewarded me with a check for letting them know and returning the packages. Very kind of them.

I ordered something on Ebay, the seller was in Illinois and I'm In NJ, it took well over a month to get it! NOT because the seller didn't send it in a timely manner but because it apparently in a usps facility 2.5 hours away from me for 2 weeks! I couldn't believe it! I agree with you on the insurance on $$ packages. One thing a seller needs to keep in mind that's more important is the *cost* of the item, and not so much the retail. OK, assuming the package is gone forever and you have to refund the buyer, you are really out the $200 (retail) for the item. That's money out of your bank. However, keep in mind that the total refund that you pay back to the customer (including shipping, "service charge" etc.) is deductible (IANAAccoutant) on your taxes as a refund/loss. Keep a record of that refund for your EOY taxes! And: the part that should be easier on your mind is that what you are out in real time is your initial investment (the cost.) If you paid $5 for the $200 item, you're out the $5. If it was something very breakable and you dropped it/broke it/had to mark it out of inventory, you would take a loss of $5, not $200.

I buy insurance for any item over $150 - not buying because of Porch Pirates, buying in case of damage to the item. And here is the dirty little secret, if the item is damaged, and maybe I did not pack real well, the Post Office will usually pay the claim and not dispute it as long as you do not do it all the time. The USPS claim system is excellent, I have never had a problem.

My boyfriend and I have confronted multiple people doing it and they’ve always gotten pissed off and tried lying to us and ultimately give up and drop the packages. I see a lot of my neighbors order stuff and then leave for the weekend and packages pile up on their front stoop! I can’t believe it sometimes because I will never order anything if I know I’m not going to be around for a few days to a week to receive it. But luckily a lot of us know each other and try to look out for packages for each other!

That is funny this topic came up. Specifically regarding dropping packages off. I have for years (maybe a decade or two at this point) have simply dropped packages off without receipt or watching them scan the items. They have a drop box if that is full I simply go inside and they had a counter they let people who didn't want to wait in line just drop them off and continue. Never have problems with people getting their stuff so I find getting a receipt or watching them scan items into the system irrelevant. Anyways, that isn't really my complaint, it is specifically about dropping packages off. My latest time dropping off, the drop box was full, so I go in and drop the rest on the counter. As of now I guess you can't do it (they have put some type of computer at the drop off counter). The worker now says I have to wait in line doesn't really matter how long it is to simply drop off my packages and carry on with my day. It almost is like the workers don't want the packages ... its a little silly to me.

USPS now requires an in person inspection of the item AND all packaging on damaged claims, with or w/o extra insurance, within a short window of time.
So your buyer receives a damaged package where the item is destroyed. Now they either have to send it back to you (with the damaged packaging as well!) for YOU to bring to your PO OR they have to bring it to their PO IN PERSON for a Post Master inspection (if PM’s day off, you have to come back. Only the PM can do these inspections) and still no guarantee they’ll accept the claim. USPS insurance is now a complete scam!

For usps I get a scanned receipt standing in line, then when I track the packages, if after 7 days it is still showing e route to next facility, you can go online after7 days submitting the missing mail search…..that usually lights a fire under them to get the package moving when it’s just sitting at a distribution center. Going through this now on one. Yet, when I asked my local mailing USPS they told me wait 30 days before submitting lost mail. Nope go online its 7 days!

The postal worker who is normally at the post office in my town is a PITA about giving receipts and scanning to master sheet, which I don’t understand. The post office in the town next to me has employees night and day better with customer service. They don’t ever make me feel like a chore. I just got a refund check from usps for a lost item. I filed online. It was easy, and got check in under 2 weeks. Think you might need a USPS account.

Same here. They owe me $79. I’m on my second appeal. I gave them the receipt I got when I dropped it off, a screenshot of the listing and an invoice.
You have to file your claim online but have to wait 7-10 business days to respond to their denial by mail to know how to go forward. They don’t tell you online.
It’s not worth it to me to ‘save’ a few cents then they lose your item and don’t reimburse you $79. It’s like stealing. It actually is stealing. My buyer’s item is in the possession of usps somewhere or it was stolen. I had to reimburse the buyer for that.
It also hurt my account even though eBay says it didn’t hurt it. I’m not a huge seller. I’ve been doing the same thing as before with no sales.

The post office has put in new scanners that weigh and measure every package now. So the new costs include box size in addition to weight. Well now next month eBay is giving our discount to the customers. That’s calculated shipping only. So now with promoting and giving up shipping it’s going to cost about 50 percent to sell anything. Mercari now is putting the sales percent on the customers.

Speaking of insurance with the USPS, I shipped a package of a large cat figurine to a buyer in California. The figurine was shipping via USPS Priority which included insurance up to $100, which fully covered the cost of the item sold. The package was filled with packing peanuts and the figurine was wrapped in bubble wrap. It was nevertheless severely damaged and broken in shipping. I asked the buyer for photos, which I received. I filed a claim with the USPS. The USPS denied my claim stating they wanted to see the item in person. Obviously, I could not do that because the buyer had it, and I couldn't reasonably expect my buyer to jump through so many hoops trying to get the insurance claim processed by bringing it to a post office themselves and filing the claim. I was out the cost of the item, and the cost of the shipping with the so-called insurance. It should be insurance*, with a note that you may not actually be able to reasonably collect from a claim. I have had another couple examples where the USPS did pay me from insurance claims, and in those instances, they didn't ask to physically see the item.

I insure over $500. IF I remember. Ive been winning by paying less than 10% on cogs for so long I consider myself to be self insured. Usually my big sales are 30x-100x ROI so when it comes down to it Im not out so much.
I tried a UPS claim once in Dec but I couldnt get past a wall of various denials to even get going on the claim. They wouldnt even give me a clue of what was needed or why I couldnt do such function. I gave up. Where's a state AG when needed?

While USPS Ground Advantage has been a game changer for 1-5 pound parcels, I've had a lot of trouble over the last year or so with them delivering to the wrong address, delays in shipping (especially with Priority), and flat out losing packages. Those problems are starting to wane a bit, but it was bad for quite a while. And their tracking still leaves something to be desired, mostly workers not scanning when they should and tracking not being updated. Could be worse I suppose...

Oh, and my worst loss was USPS. I sold a $650 Apple Watch. It was insured when I shipped it and it got to the buyer without issue. Turns out, the buyer didn't like it, didn't fit right, or some such thing. Anyway, he returned it. Unfortunately, eBay does not insure return items when you have free returns on, so it just automatically generates the label and no insurance. When it showed as delivered, it wasn't actually delivered to me. I immediately went to my local post office and they were very willing to help. The tracking showed another address, even though it was attached to my item. Somehow during shipment, the return tracking number got mixed up with another package. After a couple hours we determined that the package delivered to the other address was in fact theirs, but mine was completely missing and now with no viable tracking number. I never got the watch back. Needless to say, since eBay doesn't insure returns, I lost a bunch of money on that one...

We have a great relationship with our regular mail carrier. But we have major issues every time there is a sub. A few years ago we had multiple occasions when the carrier took hundreds of dollars of Amazon packages that were delivered to us along with our outgoing packages. This happened over multiple days. When the carrier doesn’t take the time to scan, there is risk of this; so beware when you’re doing porch pick-up. We contacted the post office and they basically said, “too bad.” We never got the packages back.

I am a reseller in Israel and I can tell you many stories of items just missing with no information. This has been very bad since last Nov. Case in point, I send an item via tracking number to a buyer in the states. The USPS does not scan any of my tracking numbers and the only way I know a buyer got the item is through the feedback I get or a question. But once an items leaves Israel, no tracking information...zero. So in about 25 percent of these missing items, I have to refund the buyer. And there are times when a buyer opens a case and nothing shows up, I refund that person and then a week later, the item shows up and this is because the buyer told me. I write to Ebay and they tell me that they cannot influence the USPS in any way and that I should write to their inspector general and never get a response. Another incident happened lately, I sent a letter to the states and it came back about many weeks with no notation as to why it was returned. So because of the USPS, I have lost money.

Also a package this year worth $60 said delivered to my house. Nope. Never came. My PO couldn't find it. Never got it. My town is known for delivering to the wrong houses according to the local FB town group. I live in a strange territory. The Richmond area post offices have been going through intense scrutiny lately, due to some dishonest carriers stealing packages and first class mail. Items I sell on Mercari take noticeably longer to be delivered. They don't include the 4 digit zip code on any addresses. I find this to be really strange because those numbers are specific to that address only, no one else will have that unique code. Not having that little bit of info, slows everything down. Mercari is based out of Japan and maybe they dont know about the 4 digit zip code thing. ???

I'm loving Mercari! No more selling fees on there! I just sold a 1961 James and The Giant Peach book for $75. Speaking about disappearing items, I sold a lot of comics priority mail. I even paid for shipping myself on that one. The customer messaged me and said the most valuable comic in that lot was missing from the box! I had to refund him some money. Personally, I thibk he was lying. The only other expkanation was someone stole it out of the box alo g the way.

USPS retiree here. All scannable labels are recorded when and WHERE it was scanned by employee. The where can not be seen by sender UNLESS you ask postmaster to see exactly where it was scanned. They can pull it up on their computer and print it. Employees are SUPPOSE to scan at the door. If the gps shows it was delivered to mailbox/door, then you have a thief. Either employee, customer or porch pirate.

I shipped a 2’ tall sheepdog recently that usps smashed in 50 pieces. Of course I wrapped it in four layers with fragile stickers all over but they managed to break it. They don’t take much care in their jobs. Now I have to spend an hour figuring out how to file a claim.

I sold an iconic ooak 1960s Italian ashtray that USPS smashed. The customer sent me pictures and I refunded. I had insurance and filed a claim. They requested the box which was a ridiculous request since I was the seller, it was not in my possesion. The customer would not respond to my request to send me the box and item. Of course USPS denied my claim and I was out over $70. Everyone at my local post office said they had never seen a request like that ever. They have also lost 3 packages with zero compensation. PLEASE READ: Do NOT refund the buyer for damaged items until they return all of it to you. USPS will deny your claim every chance they can!!!!

I don’t sell as much as you maybe like 15 things a month but it’s sad that two out of those 15 didn’t show delivered even though they were. I contacted the buyers and they both said they’d received items but to this day it still shows out for delivery. I know there are a lot of procedures that new carriers have to learn and they are bound to forget some.

Have had 2 usps ground advantage claims denied because the box was not damaged. The items inside were broken although packed well. Had to literally take the returned package up to the post office per their request and leave it and wait for response- denied and I appealed- and denied again! This was for $40!!!!-
Now I know to make sure the box is damaged should it happen again! So frustrating!
The reason I had to leave it is because they thought I would repair and sell again- said I could come get it if claim denied- I never did! What a waste of time!!

I have 5 lost packages all shipped on April 8. Still no movement and opened service requests with usps. It’s is joke because a rep from the destination post office will call me with tracking info. They say package is not moving and it will be delivered if it reaches the post office. Then they close the case. You can file for a lost package 30 days after shipping. Then the real fun happens. They will find any reason to deny the claim. Last 2 denied and I appealed claims. Both were denied for failure to prove cost of item. They didn’t accept the eBay customer invoices. They wanted a store invoice from where I bought the item and a credit card receipt.

I recently dropped off four items at the post office and was informed by the worker that the packages would not be scanned because my printer wasn't good enough. Mind you, this is before he even tried to scan one. To try & prove his point when I questioned him, he scanned the first item & it scanned, no problem. Being embarrassed & doubling down he tried to scan the second package once & it didn't scan, so to take a victory lap he confidently scanned the third package which worked fine. So, in the end in three scans he scanned two items after telling me the items would not scan.
I'd love to say this is a unique situation but it's not.
My absolute favorite is the time I got a package returned for postage because it was going to Puerto Rico & there was no international postage on the package. I literally had to argue with the employee & supervisor that Puerto Rico is domestic & a US territory. Even after pulling up the wiki page and showing them they refused the package. I had to drive another 30 minutes to get it to the main post office. I swear, true story.

700 bucks I think, insure it with UPS if the buyer is ok with UPS. Although UPS damaged the one thing I've ever actually insured so you may want to go with USPS if you're worried about it being damage because in my experience Fedex has the worst track record of all 3. I had a postal worker once ask me to take my packing into town. A 20mi round trip. I decided to do it since I sell a lot of small stuff. The trip of course cost me more than that big low priced item sold for but regardless I went ahead and did it. Her attitude was extremely cringe to me but I left positive feedback on my two local post office sites. Google and one other directory. Because for the most part they do a good job but I was not financially in a great spot at the time to cover that 20mi trip so it was slightly frustrating to get that response.

I guarantee that USPS is making big money on USPS GA. Most of the time businesses, or in the case of USPS quasi fed, think raising costs increases profit. Often that is not the case. USPS being somewhat government they likely thing the way is to increase profit is to increase cost. This time someone with some business sense figured it out.

I live in a rural area but I don’t have mail delivered to my house because the methheads will steal it. The customer was so very dissapointed. They had saved up for over a year to buy this bag. They were kind and did not blame me. I had no recourse but to refund the buyer and take the financial hit. I have no evidence but I am confident it was stolen at customs.

I think that USPS workers many times are flat lazy...several times i place mail to go...and never picked up. I was told to put a red flag...because my mail box is like an antique one...(live in an old neigborhood in texas)...so i started placing a red flag (small)..the same issue...so i started to put two flags and some times the mail was picked up. Well lately i run into trouble with some goverment mail that I place outside 5 days before the due date. 6 days and the idiot of the mail carrier did not pick it up...went to the postal office and talk with the postal master...oh boy..no wonder there is a problem..and idiot...who said that the usps is private and that they can do whatever they want...so i ended up loosing my medicaid coverage and my medicare coverage just because the idiot do not want to get out of the truck and pick up the mail. Here in texas..they do not walk ..they use the small trucks and even to deliver an important letter to you in your hand they do not get out of the freaking car but leave a pink notice that there is a letter for you at the postal office.
