This story is not unique. Japan also have a special sticky rice, a special sake rice, and their small rice suitable for Sushi.
Kaya lang, unlike in the Philippines, Japanese farmers are subsidised by their Japanese Government.

Kulitin natin ang gobyerno esp Department of Agriculture to revive, develop and support this pinipig rice! I’ve been searching for this kind…the last time I was able to eat it was several decades ago ! I
I wish the DA , plus the Bureau of Plant Industry will develop, improve , support a lot of our agri crops/ food products, fruits , vegetables…we need food security - food supply tinatarget ng mga kampon ng dilim sa buong mundo para bawasan ang populasyon ng mundo!

"bAkIt NgA bA wAlAnG nAgPaPaKiLaLa NiTo Sa AtIn? NgAyOn Ko LaNg NaRiNiG aNg DuMaN. iTo DaPaT aNg PiNaGtUtUuNaN nG pAnSiN aT sInUsUpOrTaHaN nG aTiNg MgA pOlItIkO."

I wonder what it would taste like if you turn it into sake. If it is this rare and if it has a unique flavor profile then there could be a potential for it to be a premium product. That could hopefully incentivize more farms to produce it. And just like Champagne did to Champagne, the local government should put an effort to brand it after the province and protect the brand if the product hits it big.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful story with us. I didn’t even know what this is, I asked my mum and she said this is what we call pinipig as well. I’ll definitely try this when I get the chance to go back to Philippines. I hope you and your team don’t get tired of rediscovering and sharing our beautiful culture. Thanks and much love to you and your team Erwan!❤

fond memory ke ing duman patse papalut itang medyo kule green a pale ing gagawan duman masyadong maobra ing duman pero manyaman. Sadly now the rice farmers using harvesters which is easier and cheaper production for them as nowadays it’s hard to get manpower most of the young generation they have no idea how to work on the rice fields. Thank you FEATR for bringing awareness to this traditional agriculture

I had no idea there was such a thing as green rice until watching this vlog. I only knew about white, brown, and black rices. With that, it is time for the government to save and improve the Philippines' agriculture, just as it used to be. Erwan should ask the local administration to conserve the green rice for future generations.

Is this Duman, is the green pinipig that’ks been sold in the market the same? I hardly see these green pinipig in the market nowadays. It’s so good for making Biko pinipig, and pichi piching pinipig rolled in niyog.i hope I still could see these rare pinipig variety in the market.

When I was 13 years old, I also joined the duman festival in Santa Monica, Sta. Rita, Pampanga. It was exhausting and difficult, but in the end, it felt so rewarding because all the effort and hardship were worth it for the delicious taste of duman.

My wish for #Duman is preservation and propagation of the heirloom variety. Sana hindi ma-GMO just for the sake of commercialization.

I remember my Tatang Castor, they were originally from Sta. Rita, he usually bought duman transported in Betis, Guagua during fiesta, that was in the 1980's, he loved eating duman. Now, I could not see duman sold during fiesta. It is so sad that only one family remains, I hope the tradition continues.

I love this when my grandma makes pinipig and serves it with thick chocolate… I really enjoy the unique maltose and fluffy flavour of this type of rice. This brings me back to my childhood in the Philippines. I’m sure IRRI UP Los Banos has kept the science and technology to grow this traditional produce.

We also have that kind of heirloom rice here in Nueva Ecija. My grandparents and my father used to allocate a portion of the paddies to grow ‘malagkit’ for festive purposes. But climate change and irrigation problems made them abandon planting this variety. They also stopped making ‘pinipig’ since there is no supply to begin with.

I have fond memories of harvesting green rice, and red rice it was our common food in our family. Sad to say some people took over our great grandfather's land, and we do not have a saying about it.
