You can actually feel her ANGER. And that's why we love it.
I was a young (11) when this album dropped. As a kid, most of the lyrics flew over my head, but I did understand one thing, “This chic is pissed!”
26 years later, and a better understanding of what that clown did to her, it’s like, “Yeah, she has a right to be pissed…”
When I learned how to play this song I kept wanting to punch the strings while I was playing the chorus and then I realized that I was feeling her anger! Powerful song!
Yes, it certainly wasnt for vocal skill. She couldnt hold a tone.

The older i get. the more savage this song is
As someone who was a radio DJ at the time this song hit the charts, I can't begin to tell you the shockwaves that this whole album sent through the music community. Music directors across the continent were being driven insane. They didn't know how to categorize it. It is the enduing legacy of Alanis Morrissette, that no one talks about. She really changed the face of music permanently, because she wasn't pigeon holed as a rock star or a pop star or whatever. This album was controversial because it was raw, it was emotional. It was full of energy and vibrant. But it had these cute pop songs you could sing along with, like Ironic. Then there was this raw, naked energy like You Oughta Know. And it was making music directors crazy because they didn't know how to define this 25 year old woman from Canada. Good on ya, Alanis!
@tv fella Excellent analysis and ode to what Alanis Morrissette's debut album represents
As someone who was born in 1998 and missed this period in time by 2-3 years, I can only imagine all the phenomenon surrounding Alanis and her album! When I was younger, to me it was just another pop album but as I entered adulthood, I came to understand her and the songs from Jagged Little Pill a lot more. I so wish I were already in this world the year she achieved stardom.

“I’ll tell you the kind of person [Alanis] is. When my sister Sharon was dying [of] cancer, Alanis was living in Toronto, and my sister was in Detroit. She actually drove to Detroit with her guitar and sat with my sister playing songs and singing with my sister in the hospital. That’s the kind of human being she is. I’ve never had anything bad to say about her. She’s lovely.”

One of the absolutely best songs written, EVER.
" Hell hath no fury than a woman scorned." William Shakespeare.
Ain't that the truth. F****** Shakespeare knew it. And we all know it now. And a thousand years from now they'll know it too
Yes, there is: a man who kills women
"And every time I scratch my nails on someone else's back I hope you feel it," is an *insanely* good line.
@dani cali you sound like a pleasant person
"Well can you feel it?!"
Yeah but it kind of makes her sound insane. Whether he cheated on her or just straight-up broke up with her gives her no right to wish harm upon him. Get over it and move on. There are billions of fish in the sea, and going through all this crap for one person is just childish.
@dani cali nobody cares stfu
Hell yes it is. Best line.

Yup just saw this too, crazy stuff
God Damn, Uncle Joey. You really fucked up this time.
for real
It was actually a hockey player she was dating who suddenly dumped her for another girl that the song's supposedly about. Not Matt LeBlanc.
+disagreeablesob Um, wrong Joey there. They aren't speaking about Matt Leblanc but Dave Coulier who played "Uncle Joey" on Full House. Alanis and Dave Coulier did date in the early 90s and he has admitted there are some things in the song that could pertain to him but when he asked Alanis she said it could be about a lot of guys and he could take from that what he wished, so who knows but yeah it's definitely not about Matt Leblanc.
***** I heard the ex was a hockey player from a D.J. on one of the local stations where I live.I don't know where he got it from, but that's where I heard it.
yeah, back when the song came out, I always heard it was about either Dave Coulier or the hockey player Tie Domi.
"Every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back, I hope you feel it" is such a BRUTAL line and gives me chills every single time. For me it's the final KO punch of this great song. I didn't understand it when I was younger, but 20 years later it hits different.

Doesn't gabbie have to obtain permission from this artist to cover the song, I thought?
@@Momofukudoodoowindu no I’m sure as long as she clarifies it’s a cover and gives credit to alanis’ name
@@megiddo7664 no, she will have had to secure a licence and pay the licence holder a royalty. I don’t know if Alanis holds her own licences though, frequently they’re held by other people or a record company. It’s different if it’s just being played live or not being released for monitory gains, but once money is involved then it’s an entirely different matter and people have to pay for using other people’s Intellectual Property. It’s a bit messy and it’s complicated, but the more money involved, the more likely you are to get into trouble if you use someone else’s IP without getting permission and/or paying. This certainly comes under the bracket of there’s no way it could have been released as a cover without gaining a licence and paying royalties, or we’ll have stories of Gabbi being sued in the not too distant future.

Yes it was none other than "Uncle Joey" from the sitcom Full House who she is singing about :)
That is a such a hilarious internet rumor and one that never dies. Alanis M. has said repeatedly in interviews that the song is about an ex but has never confirmed if it was in fact David Coulier who played Uncle Dave in Full House. And David Coulier eventually said that he got harassed by the press so much from Day 1 when the song came out that he just straight up went with it in one red carpet interview and made up a story about it being about him. Both he and Alanis being celebrities who deal with celebrity gossip for ages agreed that the rumor would never die and Alanis is a marketing genius in allowing it to keep going. It keeps the song alive and people talking about it.
Go watch her preform it on Letterman, was her first appearance on National TV. She sings her asssss off in that one.

I had to diagram your sentence structure to dicipher what you said. Carry on.
@Nancy Nicholas 😂👍
People who weren't around back then will never be able to appreciate what an impact this album had. It was huge.
What kind of "huge" are we talking about here ?
The popularity was huge
@@JabamiLain Donald Trump huge ! 😆
@@JabamiLain when this album came out she was the biggest artist alive at that point in time this was 1 of highest selling albums ever
Huge is such an understatement considering this is one of the best selling album of all time. lmao
I was born in 01 but why am i suddenly coming across all these indie, alternative, post grunge 90s songs
Jagged Little Pilll It's one of the best albums ever made.
It is interesting to hear this version after Gabbie's. Admittedly I hadn't heard of the song before. But this version sounds so much less one dimensional. Initially I didn't mind Gabbie's version because I liked her voice in this more rock style lower register (but I'm not gonna support her given how she's acted), but watching this just makes me realise how much Gabbie's version just stays more or less the same throughout while this original has so much more depth and personality to it.
The whole album this song is on is a masterpiece. You should definitely check it out!
Agreed, you should check out jagged little pill!
Also check out the MTV unplugged version if you like this, I *love* that album
Gabbie could never touch Alanis! I used to be a Gabbie fan but what she is doing is not cool. Especially making a lame version of this classic. I hope Alanis sues her lol
I love that rock seems to be coming back and I'm all for people looking to this kind of music to inspire their own music but rock has a rawness and this super emotional tie to it and for people like GH to see how well it did and then just to cover it for views really showcases her being more one dimensional. A song like this isn't just about sounding edgy and stuff. The emotions have to be there... Otherwise it just looks like a cash grab
Dave Navarro ( Jane’s Addiction): Guitars Flea ( Red Hot Chili Peppers): Bass Taylor Hawkins ( Foo Fighters): Drums That’s what I call 90’s everyone!
BADDASS musicians over there
Dave Navarro doesn't played all the guitars: th-cam.com/video/zYkM21v4hB0/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the updated information to everyone and all the young people who didn't know ;) That's right, it was not only Alanis Morissette on this track. 90's superband ;)
Taylor Hawkins was Alanis's drummer first! After Kurt died, Dave went from drummer in nirvana to singing and guitar in foo fighters.
No wonder it sounded a bit like something from one hot minute
Part of my life's soundtrack! Brilliant song, lyrics and execution!
i like how honest this song is about a breakup... full of rage... not like the usual weepy ones.
Ben - Oh hell yeah, when the passion was that hot! ;)
When you're singing along to this for fun but then the lyrics start becoming relevant to your past relationships.
+TheHilikus89 exactly.
hahaha exactly
totally lol
+1
Ha, what's a relationship?
She had to take the pain to make the art
Amen
Summer 2024 Milwaukee - goin to see two legends of rock! Alanis and Joan!!! Good time fosho!
Such an amazing song that every girl can relate to. The anger, the hurt, the fire. One of the best breakup "go fuck yourself" songs!
Yummy 😋
Me, a girl, not relating : 👁️👄👁️
Atlantis is truly angry at a real breakup she had. And she conveys that anger really well in the song
Except it was Uncle Joey from Full House who did this to her.
I love this song so much I relate
