The whopper jr was actually made by accident. When the first Burger King opened in Puerto Rico in 1963, they had no bread molding trays for the whoppers. The manager, Luis Arenas Perez, found smaller ones nearby and sold a smaller version of the sandwich. He is in the BK hall of fame for his creation

The other is a sort of narrow "shotgun" style location that is known to be slow and grossly understaffed even well before the pandemic.
I kinda wonder if BK corporate keeps their franchises on a looser leash than say McDonald's or Wendy's hence the vast difference.

I never really cared for the Big Mac. When going to McDonald's I'd usually prefer the Quarter Pounder with cheese. But I do love the Whopper, and had a lot of them back when they were going for $1.00 back in the 90s. I never knew that we had WhatABurger to thank for inspiring the Whopper.
Personally, I think the real secret of the Whopper isn't the flame-broiled burger, but the fact that they use both mayo and ketchup on it. Which is easy to emulate when making burgers at home, and home taste tests have proven it to me.

There was also another pretty obscure chain around Pittsburgh called "Winky's". I'm not certain that it preceded the Big Mac but it coexisted in the local marketplace. It was almost exactly like a Big Mac, center bun section and all; however, their secret sauce was light green like tartar sauce.
Tasty, but I think long gone.

My first job as a kid was at BK. With the "Have it your way" slogan, there was a button on the cash register for just about everything. Back when I was younger and could eat 5000 calories a day without gaining weight, I used to order a Double Whopper +cheese, +bacon, no onions, heavy all, off the broiler, cut in half. After making that monstrosity, they wrap it up and cut it in half and wrap it again. That way you could eat a half at a time and manage to not end up with a big mess.

I know I’m not crazy but out of all the major US national food chains, I can certainly taste a difference between a 80’s/90s Whopper and today. Tough to describe but it tastes a little bit more “mealy” or bit mushier maybe. Used to be crustier. Sometimes if I have time and I’m in the store, I’ll tip the crew a few bucks and ask for a fresh burger off the grill. Most of the time they’ll gladly do it. Makes all the difference!

Since the early 2000's it's a precooked patty with " grill branding" passed through some contraption with a weak flickering flame. True flame broiled burgers are pretty much gone now. The Whopper is the best nationwide fast food sandwich in my world, though I cannot claim to have tried them all. However, it's only truly great if you add cheese.
A fond memory is the long interval in the early 1990s when they offered a $.99US Whopper as a loss leader. I cashed in on that many, many times.
That they got the model for the Whopper from Whataburger is a shocking revelation. Is this the same Whataburger that is popular to this day in New Mexico? With green chiles, that's a great, great sandwich. But I think you have to travel to New Mexico to get it. That's a 1000 mile trip for me, but I might make it soon now that I am reminded.
