The Tali mission in ME2 actually hinted at some original plans for what the Reapers purpose is. If you want to dig further, look online for "Mass Effect dark energy plot". Overall it was nice seeing a fresh perspective on the series untainted by a decade of replaying all 3 games multiple times. A recommendation from me, don't bother with Andromeda, I've always said that game is like the spin-off series of your favorite show that gets one season, gets cancelled and everyone forgets about it, but that just my perspective of a hardcore fan.
I wanted to add some background music as some people suggested in the comments, but I couldn't find anything that fit the tone and in the end the task overwhelmed me (-ω-、) I am still looking into it, so I hope I'll get it right in the next videos! (っ˘ω˘ς )
I've just bought Mass Effect and will be playing for the first time, so i think I'll hold on this video just to see my own reaction to this classic series first.
10:30 that's a valid point that I didn't think about; Liara is a little over a hundred years old...so humanly speaking....to her we should've been gone like...2 months at most.... "Genetically engineered super manager" is a CRAZY hottake
Thanks for another lovely video! I really liked what you said about that childhood feeling of immersion. One game which surprisingly drew me in recently was Ghost of Tsushima. I would love it if you could go through that game, especially the haikus and the cultural implications of the japanese dialogue... But I totally understand that you probably have a lot on your plate already! (Also, that was a very good point about Liara being 1000 years old and still complaining about you being gone...)
I actually really liked the suicide mission. I didn’t load a save back when someone died and just kept pushing forward. So each death of my beloved crew hit like a truck. Only half my crew survived at the end so it really felt like a real suicide mission with consequences. (Mass effect 2 was my favourite so maybe I’m biased :p) Loved the video tho, great to see another person experience mass effect after all these years.
Cool video! It's always nice to see new people getting into the trilogy. I love all three games and, even though I agree 1 and 3 are better than 2, I also think 2 is great. I think you had the wrong mentality with it; the fact that it's so "unfocused" is its strength and makes it stand out from the other two. It's supposed to be episodic, comprised of slice of life vignettes of Shepard going around the galaxy in shorter missions, and the fact you have so many companions is a part of that. You kept bringing up the fact you had a "squad of choice" in every game, I think that's another weird thing, I don't understand how you can just keep picking two companions all the time, even in ME 1 and 3. I also love the Shadow Broker DLC, it's crazy to me you just called it "lukewarm". It's not all perfect though of course, not all missions are good and there's definitely some bullshit in the suicide mission, but ME 2 is still hella solid to me. Either way, I really like that you weren't afraid to express your opinion and I appreciate your honesty about how the game made you feel. Looking forward to more content even now you've moved on from Sekiro :3
Comment #3(sorry if I'm commenting too many times) Hearing your hottake on ME3; The thing about solving the geth and quarian issues is you had legion who made his sacrifice to make that happen...that whole ordeal, especially with legion, was a kind of foreshadowing to what the reapers were actually about... the AI crucible's explanation made alot of since, and you're missing some key details; 1. They don't kill the WHOLE galaxy...only the most intelligent species....which is why the prothians were wiped out And the humans were left alone(the implication is that humans were still a bunch of cavemen at that time)... 2. The synthesis ending is ultimately what was alluded too for the whole game, IMO...i don't really think the reapers are "dumb" considering they already thought of the synthesis solution ahead of time...but as was stated by the AI, they tried to "force" that process, and it didn't yield good results...so their only options was to just keep doing what they'd been doing....that being said, sheperd, being part synthetic/organic was the key thing that made The AI go back to the synthesis solution....as he was, supposedly, the only being to be both synthetic and organic at the same time... 3.its not that nobody thought of peace between geth/quarians....but again...it's just foreshadowing, meta commentary on the reapers origins...not to mention everybody being so caught up alot of their own factions and stereotypes means nun of them get their problems solved until somebody like shepherd comes along to ACTUALLY solve the problems and BS
Your playthrough made me buy and replay the whole trilogy (the legendary edition this time) xd After replaying, I reevaluated the games, though not that dramatically. Before replay, my ranking was like this: ME2, ME3, ME1. Now it's ME3, ME2, ME1. Yeah, ME1 is still "the worst" for me, but it's not because it's bad, I just prefer ME2 over ME1. However, I've found a lot of problems in ME2 that I didn't really recognize before (probably, because I've played without any DLC so I didn't feel that overwhelmed by the sheer amount of characters, at least two of which are just meme characters from DLCs Xd). My first ME game was ME2, which is probably why I liked it the most. And which is why I also didn't have any problems working with Cerberus cuz I hadn't played ME1 and didn't know what Cerberus really was. I still like the Normandy from ME2 the most, I don't really like the internal structure of the Normandy in ME3, for some reason, It is harder to navigate for me than the one from ME2 xd But I've enjoyed the first ME game way more than I did in my first playthrough. ME1 was the only ME game I've never replayed prior to this year xd Though I can agree with you about half of the criticism about ME2, especially about fighting (turned out it's way more tedious than I remembered it to be, but maybe it's the legendary edition's fault, dunno) but I really like most of the characters that appeared ME2 (except maybe Jakob, I'm sorry, he is very boring, the only thing that was interesting about him was this set up for his loyalty mission, but they executed it so bad xd), especially Thane and Jack (I don't like her as a person, but she is very good written and interesting character IMO). But of course, characters that appeared in ME1 and were with you throughout the series are way more interesting. Post this comment to help the channel grow it! (ノ´ヮ`)ノ*: ・゚
I tried to play mass effect 3 on the ps3..I stopped at the point when you meet Garry's again, and realized I couldn't really enjoy the game because I wasn't "invested"... I didn't know any of the characters or anything...only person I knew for certain was Keith David..and that's just knowing the voice actor...at the time, it was announced the trilogy was getting remastered to the ps4... I played the trilogy when it came out on ps4...so when I came back to playing ME3 again, I understood everything that was going on, and how dire the situation was...and now saw/heard, not Keith David, but commander anderson(God rest his character soul😔😔😔)... I would argue mass effect is lowkey better than starwars in a couple different areas, as a sci-fi epic.... I say that to say, that's the reason, I think, ME2 grew on you..you're supposed to have played the 1st one....it's a continuous story from start to finish
One notable point where I would disagree with you, is Kaidan vs Ashley comparison. After my first playthrough I got exactly the same impression as you did. Although, yes, they both are quite boring and bland, as is Jacob, Ashley actually grew up on me as I replayed the trilogy. There are a couple things that make her more interesting than she seems to be at first. She's quite a rare case of interestingly (well, kinda) written racism - she doesn't just hate aliens beacuse she could, or because she believes in human superiority, or even because the aliens hurt her and now she wants revenge (khe-khe, Saren). Instead, her entire childhood was deeply marked by the stigma of a 'traitor child', whose grandfather 'didn't do enough for humanity', for which she overcompensates by trying her best to be as patriotic - and thus heavily pro-human - as she can be. Not super complex, but still a deeper characterisation than most rasists in fiction, who are either on some revenge plot, or just assholes. And I'm not really sure, but i also remember her eventually mellowing down on the whole racism thing. Also, unlike Kaidan - or Jacob - we get some additional characterisation aside from her main plot, with her being into poetry and also, if I remember correctly, being strongly religious. So yeah, still very far from the best character in the series, but she isn't as flat as she may seem And as for ME2 - I replayed it (Legendary edition, presumably the same version you did play) as an Infiltrator and didn't notice any problems with slow-mo and stuff. So it's either that I'm much less demanding and din't notice it, or that you gor particularly unlucky. And I do think it's the best one in terms of pure gameplay, but yeah, too many companions of which the most likeable ones are either returning from ME1 (Tali and Garrus), or heavily linked with it (Mordin and Grunt), and Liara not being a companion is stupid. As for the Human Reaper - I don't think it was ever explicitly stated in-game, but the implication seems to be that every Reaper is built in image of a species it's harvested from, in this case humans, and the typical five-legged-squid form is something like an exosceleton, which in turn is built in image of Leviathans, the first harvested civilisation. And that, in turn, symbolises every species being sort of 'locked' withing the standardised framework of the harvest cycles. And, lastly, as for the purpose of Reapers... yeah, it's dumb. But, and this is totally me just pulling a cracpot theory out my ass beacuse I need some Watsonian explanation, but I like to believe is that the Reapers are fully aware of the pointlessness of the harvest and their existence. However, they, like any other life forms, want to survive, so they keep putting on the whole 'our motives are incomprehensible to your feeble flleting mind' sharade, but not for us - for themselves, to justify the continuation of their lifecycle. Not perfect, and worse than the supposed original pupose of controlling and limiting the use of mass effect to prevent it tearin the Galaxy apart, but hey, it's something.
Oh, and P.S. If you do decide to replay the trilogy, I would recommend to use mods. No need to go crazy, Skyrim-style, but there's a bunch of cool stuff. For example, restoring cut content (of which there is a lot in ME3 especially), diversifying hub areas so that NPCs are less of generic humans everywhere and more of different species using a wider variety of models (like bringing more than exactly one female turian in the entire game), making characters actually use the weapon they carry in cutscenes (instead of standard pistol/rifle), or backporting weapon models from later games into ME1 (the inventory management is still tedious, but hey, at least every gun looks differently and isn't a reskin of the same model), etc, etc. Really helps quite a bit with immersion, and also now I think that maybe one of the mods I had in my last playthrough was what fixed ME2 sniper bugging you mentioned.
Hello, another person who sort of dislikes ME2. Nice to see you exist after all! WARNING!!! My English sucks. Even weirder, something like 90% of your opinions on the series seems to be very similat to mine, through I played ME games right after their release. I honestly can't understand why so many people have so much love towards ME2. To me it's just, well, boring. The whole game feels like a spinoff forced into the "main game" spot and consists of playing therapy with mostly uninteresting characters*, repetetive mind-numbing scanning and boring combat. People like to say "you just bad at it/don't get it" or something like that on the latter but hell, I played the game on Insane and on Easy (yeah) - and it's still meh. Oh, and "abilities don't work on armor/shields" was horrible idea. *Characters. After my first playthrough I couldn't remember names of half of them just a few weeks after fifnishing the game. Really. Garrus was always cool, but barely had any dialogue other than CALIBRATIONS. Tali and Samara were good (I'm not as much of a fan of the latter as you through), Mordin and Legion were interesting. That's it, I guess? I mean, I do understand the idea behind some character but... Like, Miranda and Jack are, I think, supposed to be seens as similar yet contrasting characters (female prodigies who were seen as more of "projects" than people since their childhood and thus have problems connecting to other people) - but they 'feel' like unlikable semi-boring semi-cringy versions of not-mary-sue. Or how about Jakob? He is, seemingly, intened as a "relatable normal guy" - but in practiсe he feels like just a walking waste of space, both personality- and gameplay-wise. I also dislike being forced to work with Cerberus, who somehow gone from some rogue secret service from ME1 to this uber-powerful organization in ME2 without any real explanation. What's worse, they are not even interesing (to me atleast). They are just some lame guys who are constantly get "look how totally cool they are!" treatment, with Kai Leng from ME3 being the true avatar of all-things-Cerberus. Also, "dying star" storyhook was just A possible part of cosmic robo-squids plotline, not the-lead-up-to-the-true-originally-intended-story as many people think. Bioware did not actually have a specific story resolution in mind and just gone with "guys, write your ideas on Reapers motivation and then we'll chose one". "Reapers want to stop dark energy from destroying the world" was Drew Karpishin's take - and the only one that is known to the playerbase, but it wasn't the only one. Also, back when shitstorm around ME3 endiing was active, devs tried to argue that ME series was always about Organics vs Syntetics and it's players' fault for not noticing it. Oh. and Javic is one of my favourite characters through the series. Did you took him to Thessia? He has a lot of dialogue there. He was actually part of the main story before being cut and moved to DLC. Also, almost all our choices are the same. I took the blue ending through - it seems no one is capable of anything without Shepard's help or encouragement, so taking control is the next logical step:) Anyway, wonderful video as always.
I have no idea, why so many people (according to statistic by developer afair) played as paragon. It's boring white knight in space. All of my many, many trilogy playtroughs (first too) i played as renegate. Tried paragon and dropped it somewhere in 70% of me1. Renegate ftw. Hugely disagree with you about me2, but i understand where your opinion coming from. Great video overall tho.
Thanks! Paragon is a more standard "good guy" option that I think many people are comfortable with, but it also depends on the game. I think, I was more Renegade in ME2 just because it made more sense story-wise. I know my opinion about ME2 is hugely unpopular but I tried my best to explain why I didn't enjoy it o( ❛ᴗ❛ )o

fwiw i like how ur videos have no bg music. the vibe is great for chilling/falling asleep to. ❤
I really like this more biographical approach to the game. We've gotten really used to like 12+ hour breakdowns but writing like this is great.
I've just bought Mass Effect and will be playing for the first time, so i think I'll hold on this video just to see my own reaction to this classic series first.

Hi there! Your games’ review is rather interesting, l’ve read one, so I decided to visit your channel. Do you make contents in English only?
