We can see from how vigorously it’s growing that your "root beer barrel" is very happy! As for the offer of cuttings, thank you for the generous thought..... if we were closer, it would be fantastic to exchange plants, but I think they wouldn’t withstand such a long journey! In any case, I’ll keep following Your botanical tips, and in the mean while I also improve my English... (Your way of speaking is so clear and easy to understand). Ciao, Eli

Thanks 🙏 you are so kind and I always appreciate your comments. I always feel badly when growing the cuttings into the compost especially when the trees have such nice bark. Thanks for watching!!

Excellent way to start the day...Had to pause and make some brew...Excellent pot/tree pairing where the pot color/texture really accentuates the trunk...For those of you who haven't taken advantage of Tom's offer of cuttings, you're missing out...He is very generous and the cuttings I purchased showed up healthy and all are growing with vigor today...Thanks for sharing Tom...

So glad to hear that the cuttings are doing well Nathan!! I also really like the pot combination with this one - I bought a bunch of Hattori pots some time back and like them more and more.
I’ve finally moved the last of my plants indoors yesterday since we are now getting under 40 at night. The Crassula really love the sun during the day and cold wet at night which always surprises me. They grow more in the early fall than they do all summer for me - almost explosive.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

Do you have the casullas under some type of cover from rain? I have a few really old ones that I keep outside under my carport during the winter they seem to do alright. I bring all my ports in the garage under a grow light. Thinking about keeping the less favorable ones out this year to see how they do.

Nice to see the older photos of the tree it gives a newbie like me some encouragement for my wee plants.
Definitely looks better after you removed the top

Thanks 👍 for the comment. I was thinking that it would help to show how the tree has developed over a fairly short period of time.
My last repot I decided to move the tree to a larger pot and it certainly allowed it to stretch its legs a bit and thicken up a bit.
      Thanks for watching! ❤️🌲

Great looking little tree. Taking the top out was the right choice. I recently got some indoor grow lights for my PA's. I watched the video that you mentioned again on the various types of ports. I found on Etsy what is supposed to be one of the pink tricolor ports. It should be delivered today.

Keep your eye out varieties of PA at home depot and Lowes during the spring...I've grabbed them up in my area...they've had everything except cork bark..

Wow that’s a rare plant at least in the UK, someone was selling a few cuttings on eBay for £20 each just 2 leaves and a tiny bit of stem with no roots

Thanks for the vote of confidence Lee! Good luck with the new variety - I am always surprised when I find new ones.
I went to Home Depot over the weekend to pickup a hinge for a cabinet and ran through their plant section just for kicks. I believe I saw a lilliput variegated there which I’ve never even heard of. I exercised restraint as I have so little room and didn’t buy it, but I keep thinking about it……..!!! 🤣
      Thanks for watching! ❤️🌲

@@CoffeeandBonsaiwithTom Unfortunately what I received was not a pink tricolor, it was a unrooted cutting for $16 +shipping. They're giving me a refund.

Nice tree!! My glassed in sunroom dropped down to 43F last night....all my crassula jades and portucaria afra will be moving into the basement under LED grow lights by the end of the week.

We are on opposite sides of the country with similar timelines! I brought the last of mine indoors yesterday and there all under lights for the winter. We’re supposed to dip under 40 in these next few nights. It’s still so nice and sunny during the day, but I don’t have the stamina to do the bonsai shuffle anymore!! 🤣
So, I keep them outside as long as possible instead. Someday, perhaps I will love to Hawaii or someplace similarly warm!!

I liked the root beer barrel pot.
If you left the top alone, it would have looked great, but too tall for your plan. By cutting it back, it still looks great but stays to your liking in height. I’m diggin it, Tom.

Thank you! They grow so fast that I never get too concerned with radical cuts since it can easily be changed even in a season.
I agree, it’s better shorter. I really like that little pot and now I get to find a new plant to put in it! ❤️🌲

How long until my portulcaria afra cutting starts getting a trunk instead of just being a a straight red stem?

    • @CoffeeandBonsaiwithTom
      @CoffeeandBonsaiwithTom  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

It all depends on how much growth that they put on. The trunks will develop "bark" and age over time, but their thickness depends on how much growth they have collectively put on.
I tend to allow mine to grow out pretty well to 6+ sets of leaves and then prune them which allows for quite noticeable trunk thickening every year. A cutting loses that stem look in the first year and starts to develop more of a tree lock in year 2.
I feed mine a lot and keep them growing all year round which quickens the overall development. Indoor growing has its own set of challenges, but I enjoy it and it keeps the trees moving at a good pace.
If you put a cutting into a flower pot with a soil that stays moist all summer, it will put on tremendous growth and thicken and grow n great height in a single season. For this reason, the quickest size development is outside of a bonsai pot where the plant has access to all the food and root room that it desires. Once it's put in to a bonsai pot, all this growth is much more controllable, but also much slower. So, it's a trade off depending on what you want and the stage of the tree. You can develop very impressive trees either way or, most likely, using a combination of fast growth, then controlled refinement.
Best of luck and thanks for the great question!

Couple comments. Much better without the top. 😊 - also, “barely grasping to life” - a fleeting and profound statement, one that makes you look at one of those actual trees in a reverent, caring, and insert adjective here… or all life for that matter. 😊

Excellent points!! And thanks for watching and commenting.
I tend to style based on what the tree ‘tells’ me it wants to be so it’s always a combination, but tending to be pretty minimalistic.

@ that’s the best way, move it in the direction it wants to go. I’ll learn one day. Lol 😄
