Making a Linen Wrap Dress for Only $6!! || Inspired by A $236 Dress

  • Can you believe I made this linen wrap dress for $6??? The inspiration is the Tailored Wrap Dress from Son de Flor (sondeflor.com/...) and until I can afford to buy one myself, I decided to make it from linen curtain panels I bought for only $6. My sewing skills aren't that great yet but I think I can make something wearable if you don't look at it too closely.
Anyway...how does mine compare to the original?
Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe

Love all the tips! And the struggles & laziness is very relatable... About the pockets: don't sew the pocket sides to each other - instead attach each side of the pocket to each skirt part, like ears, then sew from the top of the skirt, around the ear and down to the hem - all in one swoop !! highly recommended

    • @Jen.O
      @Jen.O ปีที่แล้ว +6

yes! the ear trick. also, go back and sew an extension of the side seam up into the pocket opening a few inches, and that will create a bit of a side and a deeper pocket so stuff doesn't fall out.

Let me trade you this tip for your thrifted linen curtain tip.
When you need to measure the length for a skirt, use your tape measure upside down. Lower the number 1 down your leg until it gets to the length you want. Then the number you need to read for the length is up around your waist somewhere.
Took me more than your 40 years to work that out 🤣
    Your dress came out lovely!

Love, I’m 64, been sewing for 50 of those years…..I always keep my seam ripper , or 2 or 3 of them handy as I always need it frequently!! Just a fact of sewing! When you come to terms with it’s o”k to make mistakes” it becomes relaxing! Secrets of life…

Just came across this video.. love it! You're humor is great and the dress came out so well!.. and I love the use of thrifted fabric. I'm a big fan of using King sized flat sheets ( in 100% cotton ) for my sewing projects and think this dress like this made with an organic cotton (or a linen blend) would be lovely!

Linen is just a wonderful fiber. Thrifting is a little-known source for acquiring fabrics. I frequent the Goodwill for old bedlinens for quilting projects. The style, color, fit of this dress are all spot-on. You created a beauty. Good for you!!!!!!

About three weeks ago, I was at a fabric store and in the clearance bin there were a bunch of linen shower curtains for $5 dollars. Since I have a glass door shower, I walked away and didn't bother with them. THAT WAS A BIG MISTAKE !!! I wish I could turn back the time. This dress turned out absolutely beautiful and thank you for sharing your idea. I will never look at linen shower curtain the same way again.

Fun listen. Love that you're using those linen curtains. I'm always looking for old linen table cloths because they usually are soft. I am into dyeing yarn and fiber so I'd probably dye them too. Thanks for a great creation. You're very good. I'm not that great at sewing. Sewed a skirt in HS home ec a million years ago. Found a tiny Japanese sewing machine at the GW outlet store. My local shop said he can tune it up. Thanks again for the inspiration!

I'm about to journey into the world of sewing linen dresses for myself, looking to learn, and your video popped up. The dress is beautiful and flattering. You did a great job. And you are hilarious! I'm all about the recycling/resourcing thrift for new clothes. So much fun to explore. I've been sewing for...40+ years, with a couple near decade breaks in between. Have sewn many side seam pockets... (Great idea on the "support strip")...But I feel your pain in finishing neckline and armhole edges in bias tape. Have done many--and ripped out many. Even just this last week, after trying so hard to keep it straight and have a professional finish. The torment!! Lol. Thanks for the inspiration!

I love it! I shop at thrift stores and buy curtains or bed sheets for like $3 or 4 and I make reversible wrap dresses from a Simplicity pattern, vintage looking but I love the idea of being able to quick change if I drop food or a mark gets on my clothing. I have made two so far, one from curtains and one from bed sheets. Nothing ventured nothing gained, right?

    One word: Pockets.
I was part of a sewing group of older ladies....I'm so talented, , I was allowed to iron...but then not iron because unskilled.
They let me bring dessert & glue paper-quilts.
I don't eat sugar and Mae+double stick tape =comedy. These ladies are a fabulous tribe of crusty, salty, graciousn generous bad-booty prairie folk....and sweetly protective.
I put you on the list of gentle-folk that shod be loved-up, encouraged, protected & fed dessert while an unskilled peasant offers to iron your fabric or glue tiny nibblets of paper to bigger pieces of paper...at sewing bee.
    In other news, Huzzah!
Keep sewing vanquisher of thine pocketestesses!

It ended up too short and just didn't sit right so I think I will try again. After watching the video again and laughing out loud at your wonderful sense of humour I thought I would just drop a note to say how delightful your humour is then laughed again when I saw that as the previous comment was me too! The pleats are awesome. Much prettier than the circle skirt, in my opinion.
    Whole project was a win.

I eventually switched the skirt for a gored/pleated one only because the one in this video just didn't have good movement. It was a good lesson on the differences.

Yeah, that's me every 15 minutes or so when I'm working on a project. Usually followed by "what's the worst that could happen? 🤷"

Brilliant! I like those linen dresses I see everywhere on instagram, but don’t like the price! I’ll be sure to make one now that i have been inspired by your video!
