    There is no reason to get bored of anything in dentistry. There is always something new to learn. Very few people are professionals in general dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, and oral surgery. There is no reason why you cant take CE courses to start doing other procedures if you're bored

      If really, really curious about a dental career: 1. Shadow a dental student, not a dentist. The dentist has already “made it.” The dental student is struggling with the stress and reality of academics. 2. Buy a book on “head and neck” anatomy. Buy a book on dental anatomy and an anatomically correct typodont (dental model). Memorize every single illustration and nook and cranny. With a dental mirror & dental probe, study your own dentition. See if your family will let you examine their dentition. You can sterilize the instruments in a pressure cooker. 3. Take a jewelry-making class that emphasizes wax sculpture, rubber base impressions and the “lost wax” technique. Take impressions of the typodont teeth and cast them during the jewelry-making class. Sculpt from wax models of the typodont theeth and cast them. 4. View every single TH-cam video dealing with dentistry. 5. Earn a BS Biology, Health Science. Good Luck.

    Hi doc, to be honest I entered medicine but I keep thinking that I’m interested in dentistry ( because I want to make good use of my hand skills I guess, without having to suffer the stress of being a surgeon)
    + I don’t really have a specialization in mind, so I don’t know if there’s something I’ll really enjoy
    There’s a slim chance that I can change to dentistry though.
    Anyways, I’m curious how you did both specialties? Did you start from scratch for both and get both degrees? How does it work? And do you think it was worth it?

    I'm a future dentist, currently in first year of Med school. In India dentistry is seen as a profession for people who aren't smart enough to get into medicine. no one does it out of love (atleast the one's ik see it as a losers degree) and i genuinely love what I'm doing and no part of me has ever regretted my decision to become a dentist.

    Private dentists are more likely to provide patients with what they need? Surely you mean provide patients with what they need and want. The NHS provides people with what they need, whether a dentist is willing to undertake that treatment at the rate of NHS payment is another matter

Some things: Admission to med school requirements, Tuition, funding, debt, residency admissions - specialty and location, practice location, practice type, salaries, practice expenses and hours ( Many more I've doubtlessly left out ). Curriculum may be the only commonality between US and UK docs and dentists.

    Hey Doctor.
    I’m really unsure about which one to go for, your video was extremely helpful, but I am still unsure as I’d love to become a doctor and go for medicine, but the amount of years it takes to actually graduate and BECOME a doctor, is too long and I don’t think I’d want to be using half my life studying, when I could do something else, that is shorter and earns me allot of money.
    Dentistry has also been on my mind, it only takes 5 years, but I want to have a huge impact on someone’s life, like becoming a doctor, dentists do too but Just not as much you know.
    I’m really unsure, I don’t know what to do. I’ve always wanted to become a doctor, always has been my dream, but the amount of years it takes, plus the amount you earn after years of studying in the UK, I don’t think it’s enough.
    Any advice?

    • @FutureDoc
      @FutureDoc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello, both medicine and dentistry are challenging courses, they require a lot of time and dedication, and in the UK you won't be earning millions of pounds. A starting salary for a foundation doctor is 28,000 pounds annually. Once you become a registrar after multiple years of working in a hospital you earn 49,000 pounds a year. If you want to go into medicine, don't do it for the money. However, working in the medical field either as a dentist or doctor is extremely rewarding. It's unlike any other job, you are put in a very privileged position of being able to help others. Medicine as a science is beautiful and interesting, finding out how the human body functions and what we are made of is fascinating. It's a field that you will never get bored of, and in which you will never stop learning. If medicine has always been your dream, then go for it! But I'd suggest that you talk to some doctors from different specialities first so that you're 100% sure about going into medicine.

    After graduation as a dentist you are ready to go😂 most dentists graduate having removed less than 20 teeth, having placed less than 10 crowns and fitted less than 10 bridges. In short they need a lot more training to be proficient

    • @FutureDoc
      @FutureDoc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      (Misunderstands the idea of relative vs absolute). A surgeon doesn’t come out of medical school having completed “less than 20” operations. They’ll have completed zero. It will take them years before they’re able to do even the most basic procedures without someone watching over their shoulder, unlike dentistry, where the first few months are spent honing skills they’ve already learnt (practiced during dental school - with someone watching over their shoulder) to perform basic procedures proficiently and independently.

Many post-op appointments with therapists, surgeons & shrinks. Continually suffering through the Kubler-Ross stages of grief. Changed majors. MBA Marketing, GPA 3.4. Dental didactic was not difficult, just too much material - a data dump. Clinical too subjective - at the whim of your instructor. How did I go from A’s to D’s & back to A’s? Regrets: I wish I had never, ever pursued STEM, especially health science. Dentistry has ruined my health forever and I really, really resent it.
      As an military medic, I was über interested in health science and believed I should use my knowledge in aid of humanity - a life well-lived. Yeah, right…If I had a do-over, I would go into motorcycle sales and service. Enthusiasts pay tons & tons & tons of money for something they really, really, really crave, but actually don’t need - just the opposite of dentistry. When in doubt, reach for the money. Let someone else aid humanity. You - make as much money as you possibly can, in a way that doesn’t make you sick nor drive you nuts. 40 years later, my social security is still being garnished for dental school loans.
