That. Is. Amazing! How long ago it is and they still covers the recall!! Speaks volumes for Shimano!

Interesting. This part broke on me, I had a fall that tore a ligament in my knee about 20 years ago. I don't have the part anymore, but it looked like this model, the mechanic said he had never seen it break in half like that. It was on a GT mountain bike. It's a shame I didn't know that at the time.

4:51 “If you know your party’s extension, you may DlE without any time for FISHING”?? the captions you added go crazy 💀 there’s a lot of inaccuracies but that was the most egregious one lmao
cool that they still honor the recall, but wow were those were still being installed on new bikes for a long time!!

Front derailleur was a bottom bracket mount that's why.

      @@YourFavoriteCyclist I know I'm right I had the CT-90 cranks on my 95' Mongoose.

I had two performance bikes with these cranks. Older man at a small bike shop knew about it on a trip. Got the second bike fixed a year later. This shop didnt believe me until they called their shimano rep

Black Rock is a great shop.

Yep, I went through this back in 2020. The LBS wanted me to pay him for the install. So I told him to fuck off I'll put a better set on myself. Tourney are the replacement. My cost was less than $60. The shop said Shimano did not pay enough for them to do it. Tourney is bottom line. I went FC-361 with 64/104 BCD replaceable chain rings.

I've heard some people saying their LBS charged them for the replacement labor. I get it, but still it should just be covered if you have to bring it to your LBS to get it replaced. I dropped off a couple 12 packs when I picked the bike up as a thanks and my holiday gift to the shop. The shop I use is pretty good when it comes to random stuff like this.

@@YourFavoriteCyclist It pays to know how to wrench on your bike. Right?

Yep, I spotted those spindly little crankarms as soon as I clicked on the video.
I had a mid-90's Raleigh with the CT90 crank and the recall kits were out of stock and backordered (this was 2-3 years ago during all the covid shortages). I bought the bike to flip, so I had to get it back on the road and sold.
I found a CT91 crank which was the period replacement for the recalled CT90 and it was identical other than the thicker arms. That meant it bokted right up without messing with a new bottom bracket or front derailleur.
I dropped the recalled crank off at the bike shop and they were able to get a recall kit a few weeks later once Shimano got them back in stock, so I ended up with some usable parts I could put on another bike in the future.
AFAIK, all the bike shop has to do is destroy the old crank to get a recall kit shipped out. Shimano doesn't ask to verify much on these recalls.

Crazy. I picked up a Trek 850 at a fleamarket for cheap a while back. It was the skinny cranks that caught my eye in the first place, but it was all original, still had the Trek branded grips and Big Kahuna tires
Lovely bike for ripping my local trails, but this sounds unsafe now... Maybe I should donate it to the local mtb museum

I was in the wholesale side of the bike industry when this recall went into effect. Now working with free bikes for kids, we get thousands of bikes donated and as a QC mechanic these jump right out to me. It's the shape that gives them away and I always check the back side of the crank arms. Now the other possible Shimano recall is the newer road style cranks such as Ultegra but we don't see any of those. I say possible because Shimano wants riders to bring into their local bike shop for inspection which is silly because is it a recall or not? Take care.

Here is why it is still honored:
Man limps into shimano headquarters with half a crank stuck in his leg... I am sueing for 1 billion dollars. Shimano lawyer responds... OK but you know we put out that those cranks were defective and that you could get them replaced for free, so you are going to lose.
Same scenario but shimano stopped the recall...
Lawyer responds... dammit we will settle for 5 million plus medical bills.

What a wonderful freebee for an old bike. I have several old bikes I keep for retro 90's riding once in a while, and when they need a fix I always have to think "This bike is really only worth $200- should I spend more on parts or toss it".

I have a 95 hardrock ultra with the acera x cranks that are most likely also recalled... But man. The classic thin silver crank just look good! That and i very much doubt that they'll snap doing gravel bike duty. Still nice that they still perform the recall tho.

The chain replacement doesn't make sense because they don't do that for the newest crank recall, in fact my bike shop told me they didn't want to replace the chainrings because they were worn out, no crap a ten year old drive train part would be worn out just like their crappy cranks were.

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

Interesting, hadn't heard too much about the new recall (other than there was one). I could probably think of 3 possible reasons they would do less on the new recall.
      1. They're expecting those with Ultregra/Dura Ace to be all up on bike maintenance or not necessarily be bothered by having to pay for additional parts they may need replaced.
Or 2. The quantity and type of people riding the recalled parts. The cranksets for this recall were on your entry level bikes with over 1 million+ sold. In general cycling companies try to keep potential new cyclists happy instead of trying to screw them over especially with over a million people.
      Or 3. Times just change.
Who knows though just some thoughts 🤷
