I used to be afraid of spiders, now I have a pet tarantula and she’s literally the most docile little creature ever. They get a bad rap, but once you learn more about them, you realise they’re just little poobrains ❤

What kind of tarantula do you have? I've had two pink toes, and they were just so chill. My first one jumped on my back one day, and if my brother hadn't gotten her off me I don't know how long I'd have had to carry her around. I was afraid to reach for her because I was afraid I'd hurt her.

After a particularly bad winter. I went under a double wide trailer that belonged to an old man a couple streets away. His water pipes had frozen and burst. So, he had no running water. I had made my way to the place where the buried pipe from the meter came up and connected to the trailers water. This was pretty much right under the trailer’s hot water tank. It was wrapped in heat tape and was all right but right after it split to the cold was all busted and right where it came out of the floor from the hot water tank was all busted. I replaced all of it. It took a about an hour. I couldn’t see past about 2-3ft because I was using a little battery powered light that looked like a lantern but wasn’t. I crawled a little towards the cinder block foundation to look for more damage to the pipes. I was suddenly horrified to see hundreds of Fiddleback spiders crawling all over the blocks and ground. Most folks know them as Brown Recluse spiders. For a split second I thought they were Wolf spiders because of their size. Nope, they were definitely Fiddlebacks. I don’t know how the hell I had not gotten bitten yet. They were freaking everywhere. Turns out that old man had been throwing his garbage bags out back between the foundation and a retaining wall. They never bothered to fill the dirt back in after pouring the footers and putting in the foundation. There must have been at least 10 years worth of garbage laying just the other side of the foundation from where I was. I’m a country boy. I don’t scare easy. I’ve been around Brown Recluses all my life. They’re mean. One bite can rot a softball size place out of you. Your back, your leg or your face. Still, I had NEVER seen Recluses that big. Anyway, I crawled the hell out of there leaving everything I took with me behind. I told everyone and they kind of poked fun at me. Here in the country. A man shouldn’t be scared of a little spider. So, I took a mason jar and went just far enough to catch one of them. People freaked the heck out when they saw it. These sum bitches were huge. I still have nightmares.

If you ever get bit, take a sterile needle, and go in horizontally, to open up the top, and rip it open, squeeze out all the liquid possible, and then make a baking soda paste, and coat it good, and bandage it well. It soaks out the toxin. I got bit years ago, and my toe swelled up twice it's normal size, and it was itching like MAD. We put a tourniquet on my ankle and did this procedure. It worked. ! Praise God.

Brown recluses get a bad wrap. In fact, so many of the “brown recluse bites” that are reported actually are not from the recluse at; there’s a lot of misattribution that happens after someone develops a mysterious skin lesion, a sort of catch all for unidentified small epidermal wounds/infections.
Secondly, they are very difficult to identify because they’re brown and small, much like MANY other native spiders. The only true way to tell is to count their eyes: they are one of very few arachnid species to have six (arranged in three pairs of two) whereas most other small spiders have eight eyes.
In a study conducted in 2005 at the University of California, scientists asked for people nationwide to send in spiders that they believed to be brown recluses. When all was said and done, less than 20% actually were, and it became evident that poison control centres, physicians and even trained entomologists weren’t that great at identifying a recluse from other spiders. People are really good at “seeing” the violin marker on any number of species. In Georgia specifically, over 1000 spiders came in, and only 19 were brown recluses.
When one does encounter the brown recluse, they’ll find that they’re very shy and very reluctant to bite. Once their venom is depleted, it takes time to make more, leaving them defenceless during that time. Take for example a family in Kansas that lived in a home infested with over 2,055 brown recluse spiders for six years. Number of bites? Zero. Bites only tend to happen when they’re getting crushed, like if they’re hiding in a shoe for example. But even then their fangs aren’t long or tough enough to penetrate most socks.
Even if one IS bitten by a recluse, there’s less than a 10% chance that that bite will become medically significant. Most look like small mosquito bites.
So all of this is to say, it’s easy to vilify things we don’t understand and go crazy with overzealous panic at the sight of any small spider. But they are often gentle and private creatures; leave them alone and they are more than happy to do the same. Better yet, drop a fly into their web for them, and watch how interesting they can be! 🕷️ ❤️

One of the most amusing things I've seen on my land on the mountain:
I was wandering around early one morning, and saw a sizeable spiderweb limned in dew, with a chubby spider sitting in the proverbial center. The spider saw me coming past, and it began to bounce the whole thing like some kind of horizontal trampoline. It was literally calling attention to itself and its freshly completed web, so I wouldn't stumble into it and wreck the night's work!

Like come on. Suspense is the best part of most of these stories. Sigh. Rant over. If you are gonna comment stuff like this start it with SPOILERS… and a couple enter … enters …so we can’t see your freaking spoilers.
Can you tell this is one of the simple things in life I have to enjoy…? Ok. Rant now officially over. Love you all and this community.

Good news spiders can't really see you with their eyes. They just kinda see only light or dark.
But it is true they can make noises loud enough to hear and they can detect vibration with their hairs on their body to figure out where you are

Thank you Stephen for making my morning with this awesome pasta. I definitely loved this one. I actually like spiders and tend to keep them around. As long as they don't build their web in the path of walking I typically leave them be and let them catch the pests like flies that I don't want around. Otherwise I'll move the spider to a more suitable location. Spiders are welcome guests for me.🖤🖤🕷️🕷️

I remember moving to AZ and seeing my first wild tarantula, the guy freaked out and i tried to covr it with a solo cup but it was too big, but i got it down with dustpan and broom and got it to the other side of thr building. My dad's friends had an obsession with black widows and i have a calm demeanor so i essentially never freak out even if I dont like the thing.

I got bit in my leg by a spider while sitting in an LP/OP in the jungle in Panama. I still have issues with my leg.
I was bitten in 1989. I am now a spider assassin.

  • @Prizzlesticks

In general, I don't mind spiders. But I prefer not to be near them. You see, I woke up one day and pulled on some tights, only to find one leg soaked. For a moment, I thought my cat had used them as a litter box, and I was pretty peeved. Except there was no scent. Definitely not cat pee. I was so confused about how a single leg if my tights had gotten wet, when I realized a blister on my hip had burst. Except I'd had no blister the night before. I smacked a bandaid on it and rummaged around fir a new pair of tights to wear-winters in eastern Washington get pretty chilly.
As the day wore on, it got worse. Terribly itchy and rather painful. Over the next few days, two things were clear. It had been a spider bite, with two little holes still clearly visible. And, it was necrotic. The circumference of the bite was growing, while the center pitted down with black flesh. It was awful.
Everyone suggested it was a hobo spider, but studies show their bites don't cause necrosis. Some said brown recluse, but the State allege those don't live this far north. Despite that, researchers have investigated instances of necrotic spider bites in the PNW and found that, despite the insistence from the states' governments that there are none, they have been seen and identified. So whether it was an astronomically rare brown recluse or an impossible hobo bite, I don't really care. I just get a little anxious whenever I see a brown, skinny-legged spider lurking nearby.
Oh. We couldn't afford a trip to the doctor, so my friend and I did something I would NOT recommend and treated the bite with straight hydrogen peroxide. It took five applications before the peroxide had dissolved enough dead tissue for me to even feel it. I cannot stress enough, that is terrible first aid. I'm lucky I heal very quickly. The ulcer from the bite was really deep, though. I've still got a scar~
