  • On this week’s episode with Rob Staton from SeahawksDraftBlog and Jason “Puck” Puckett on the Seahawks latest win over Miami to improve to 3-0 in the NFC West and a two game lead in the division, the effectiveness of their defense, and the importance of the running game…it’s not dead! They touch on the performances of Derick Hall and D.K. Metcalf and they discuss how well the defense has played to start the season, but the challenge gets much tougher against the Detroit Lions next Monday Night . Offensive line continues to be an issue for the team particularly the play of Anthony Bradford and why the team did not put in Christian Haynes into the game?

They don't need to replicate the defensive performance they had against miami and Denver they just have to be better than with carroll. And they will be.

Regarding the run game: One of the forgotten stories of the NFC title game against the Packers is that the comeback started by feeding Beast Mode. Russ was throwing picks like crazy, Kearse was having the worst day of his life, and what stopped the avalanche and helped the team reset was just letting Lynch run over some fools. Every Seahawks team worth anything over the years has had a run game and a defense. Even that 2005 team which had a great passing game had #37 going off as league MVP.

Puck, you've poorly framed the run vs pass discourse of the last decade. The argument is that early down passing is more helpful to your QB because there's ambiguity there cuz it can be a run or a pass. And over the last decade until very recently, everyone was copying Pete's cover 3 defense, which was particularly vulnerable to the pass. Now everyone is running 2 high safety defenses which are vulnerable to the run. So anticipate offenses to adjust, and in a decade defenses will go back to single high safety looks and passing will go up again. The NFL is cyclical.

Rob keeps pointing out the quality of QBs we've played but those names are one's that would destroy Carroll's defense over the last 5 years due to death by a 1,000 paper cuts, it drove fans crazy cause it played right into the strength of a game called for game manager QB's. The only worry about the defense should be the health of them right now, they are finally a competent cohesive unit again with all 3 lines communicating with each other and ball hawking again. Team as a whole has to figure out the Guard situation, hope Fant comes back quick or Haynes can show something more than he has.

Skyler Thompson isn't destroying anyone in this league, and I'd say the same for Bo Nix in his first start. It's OK to point out they've had three favourable QB opponents so far

I think people are excited because we’re seeing things that could have and many times did trip up Carroll teams aren’t tripping up this team so far. Both things are true, the QB’s they’ve faced are below replacement level and the pass defense has been spectacular.
I’m most excited by 4 things
      1. Attention to detail: hands, feet, communication, gap control, etc.
      2. Accountability. I’m surprised nobody is talking about DK’a postgame comments on penalties and his own role in that i.e. accountability vs. his open disdain for the subject last year.
      3. All the pressure generated by the defense without blitzing
      4. In spite of the o-line issues, Geno playing the best ball of his career. Grubb is giving him a full quiver at the line of scrimmage and Geno mostly has answers that overcome the deficiency of the O line. This is necessary because it’s extremely unlikely that the O line will get much better throughout the season.
