We used to give them 5 feet. If they got inside our reach, they were pulled through our line where a team arrested, handcuffed and transported them out of there immediately. This got rid of the leaders, the most vocal and the most antagonistic first. That usually took the fight out of them.

This is almost exactly what we did when called out for the first Watts riot of 1964. We [US Marines] were called out to clear rioters from a boulevard in San Jose. We had M1's and WW2 11 inch bayonets tho, instead of clubs, and instead of Move Back, we were silent, raised our M1's in the forward jab position and as we took one step forward we jabbed forward and the other foot came up we pulled the gun back, next step was jab forward and so on for about 2 city blocks, The street was cleared before we got to the end. :o))
