Interesting video. I drove round East Cape twice about 18 and 20 years ago. The road was unsealed just past the Aratere River bridge. I am surprised that several long sections are now sealed. The distance ( in round figures) is 21 km from Te Araroa to the end car park. It’s quite a climb up to the lighthouse, but worth the view, coming down is harder! I remember I was able to use 025 mobile and make a call. Now residing in the South Island, so unlikely to make a third visit. I do recommend driving Opotiki - Gisborne as the scenery is amazing and there are many beautiful beaches and lots of interesting locations and small villages. SH35 has had a lot of storm damage by all reports, so check out conditions before you go.
Thanks for sharing mister! There aren't many videos showing SH35. My partner and I recently drove down to Gisborne for the first time and I planned for us to drive and explore SH35. We didn't end up driving SH35 - just directly from AKL to GIS. I was guttered at first but after watching your video - I'm glad we didn't. A relative in Gizzy was iffy on the idea of us driving SH35 too, said it could be dangerous - especially if we were going to attempt the drive in our slightly low 2L VW Golf TSI station wagon. Next time SH35 - we will be better prepared to explore you!!!!! Happy New Year all! :)

I’m glad you took their advice! The roads were and still is rough! It’s “ok” now just stick to that speed limit and you’ll be fine
