I just successfully followed this video very closely. Thanks again for posting it. When I added the oil, I paid close attention to the levels in the sight glass, and got the oil level perfectly aligned to the midpoint (while the bike was on the center stand). Interestingly enough, when I reached the last step of checking for leaks, I ran the bike for a little bit. After this, the oil level dropped way down! It was all the way down below the sight glass, with nothing showing. So I added more oil to get the level back into the mid-point again, but this time I was fearing that when the bike cooled down it would rise up too high. But I just checked it as the bike was cool and it was still perfect.
Beautiful workmanship. You set an example for others to follow. The only time that I've ever used a torque wrench for such a task was when I worked in aviation. No short cuts, there. At home, the "calibrated" elbow has always been my friend. And that is not the way to do the job, properly. You've woken me out of my slumber. Cheers.
You are supposed to check the oil level sight glass straight up. I have found that sitting on the bike upright and using an inexpensive mechanics extendable mirror works very well for looking at the level.
@@mikelaputt My 2018 Classic version came fitted with a center stand and life is much better with it. But the head mechanic at the Kawi shop warned me that the sight window gives a false low reading when the bike is on its center stand: Bike is tilted forward with the rearend elevated, sight window is located towards the rear of the engine case. More accurate if you check it with both wheels on the ground, bike upright on its axis. I also found that shifting feels smoother if oil level is closer to minimum. Just keep a close eye on it to avoid starvation. 🏍
@@cycoklr, you are correct. Adding oil while the bike is on the center stand will result in overfilling if lined to the middle of the sight glass. I normally gauge how much oil I’ve added by the measurement markers on the bottles along side the sight glass or dipstick. I stopped adding oil when I thought I’ve added the right amount and saw nothing on the sight glass. Took the bike off the center stand. Oil flowed into the sight glass slightly above the bottom line. It was a matter of adding a little more to get it to the middle.
On my car the oil filter sits straight up, so can fill it completely and do. When it tilts 90 degrees from being upright, not so easy. You can fill it and some oil will come out by the time you get it threaded and screwed down. But anything that shortens the delayed oil pressure from an empty oil filter makes it worth while.
1999 W650 : just 25 years old, 116000 kms, looking like new one, just a fuel petcock changed, original front disk ….in summer between oil changes, just a glass of oil to complete the level ….😊

@@mikelaputt thank you for the video. Got my 2019 w800 cafe a year ago. Dealer did my 600 mile and I just hit 3300 miles. About the oil quantity. From the owner’s manual: 2.7L (2.9 US qt)[when filter is not removed] ; 2.9 L (3.1 US qt)[when filter is removed]. I just did a change of both oil and filter, bike on center stand and front wheel propped up with a board to get almost perfect level front to back, not so perfect side to side, and it seemed like it took a little bit more than 3.1 qt. I was interested in what brand your adjustable filter wrench was and if it works well for you. I want to set the torque on the filter.
I agree! But look you are using a Kawasaki oil filter. Why not use Fram or other ? Kawasaki oil filters are made in China . May I recommend you Hiflofilters They make the oil filters for Honda and they’re very good aftermarket ones made in United States
@@mikelaputt I am being ironic I wouldn’t put a Fram filter on a bicycle ! The oil you use in your motorcycle is a topic that could go for hours . Enjoy your motorcycle and be safe

I remedied this by recently installing a center stand. You are correct though. It is best to check it when the bike is upright.

When I can, I prefill a filter to prevent a dry start.
That's actually a great idea!

Mike thank you very much for the video. I have a W800 Street and I see that you can change the oil with the bike tilted. Greetings from Spain
You are very welcome. Glad that it helped.
Thanks for doing this vid. I have a 2020 standard W. What size crush washer for the oil plug? Thx!
That is a question better answered by the dealer.
I love this bike. I have the 2019 same one.
So do I, great bike 👍

If you can, do the air filter cleaning video.
It is next on my list.

Would be great. I have the same bike but have not figured out the air filters yet. Will look forward to your video.
The Bike has no Centerstand?
Yes. The Cafe version does not come with a center stand.
@@mikelaputt ahhh,okay .
How much oil does the bike need ? And also, what type of oil ? Thanx in advance !
About 3.38 quarts or 3.2 liters
I used synthetic 10w-40.
What is the brand of your torque wrench? Thanks & Cheers!
Its a Craftsman electronic torque wrench. I’ve had it for quite a few years.

Whats the torque on the oil filter?
13 ft lb
How many litres of oil??
3.2 litres or until the recommended level on the sight glass is reached.

Thanks. I'm hoping to get the center stand in sometime soon. I want to document everything I do with my new bike.
I didn't know Supertech made motorcycle oil.
I’m not much for name brand. It’s the cheapest synthetic motorcycle oil at WalMart.
