Saw GG in Ottawa , Canada in 1975 and 76. Two brilliant shows. This is a real treat to see Gary Green ( a very underrated prog guitarist ) bringing GG to life again with these talented musicians...Great post...Cheers...
The period of time when Gentle Giant existed was fallow with creativity musically, inspired by record companies that rewarded bands that were highly original. Even in one genre like progressive rock (a label recognized only by record companies and the buying public and not necessarily by the bands themselves) you had bands as diverse as Yes, Genesis, and Gentle Giant. GG were by far and away the most original and musically adept IMO! I mean in the writing of their compositions alone no one could touch them! With this music so complex, any number of things could go wrong in live performance back in the seventies. Still night after night during the rigors of one nighter after one nighter, town to town under less than luxurious conditions, GG knocked audiences everywhere out with their live performances! I consider them to this day to be nothing short of a miracle! It was like they were meant to play together.
GREAT SET LIST: 1 - Prologue (Three Friends) 2 - Mobile (Free Hand) 3 - Wreck (Acquiring the Taste) 4 - Just the Same (Free Hand) 5 - His Last Voyage (Free Hand) 6 - Alucard (Gentle Giant) 7 - I Lost My Head (Interview) 8 - The Advent of Panurge (Octopus) 9 - Schooldays (Three Friends) 10 - Mister Class and Quality (Three Friends) 11 - Proclamation (The Power and the Glory)
What a fun show! Thanks for sharing this with those of us who could not be there. Thanks to the lads and lady of Three Friends. And as ever thank you ever so much to all the lads who made up the great Gentle Giant. Hail!
This is wonderful. Thanks to Gary for first starting up "Rentle Giant" and morphing it into Three Friends. Although totally different songs and feel I always thought of Gentle Giant as a "Yes" you could have play in your living room due to the tightness of the arranging and incredibly "spare" (i.e. players not stepping all over each other) arrangements . Saw GG 10 or 12 times in the 70's and they completely changed my musical thinking/playing/arranging (even when playing in a bluegrass or country rock band). Gary still kicks A**!!!!!!!
Came all the way from Brazil, I was right there. Even got my Octopus CD autographed and had a quick chat with the keyboardist, such a nice guy! This cruise was fantastic!
Ho finito ora di sentire il concerto. Assolutamente grandi. Modernissimi ancora oggi. E' incredibile come oggi non c'è niente di questa arte. Miei maestri negli anni 70. Fantastici !!! Grazie Shulman/Minnear/Green.
I was there and Gary borrowed my ball cap while they were doing their sound check, some guy wanted to give me $100 for it when he gave me it back, no sale. Just back from Gorgg in Paris where we saw the guys again at the Cabaret Sauvage, great gig. Must mention the Moullets who were the support band, absolutely great. Don't miss them if you get the chance.
John Burns, you "lucky bastard", if may. Even with just Gary, the music from GG is one of the best ever. Hard to play live. Who are the other guys, besides the bass player known as former JTull Jonathan Noyce, right? Thanks for enlighten me.
Man the Lifeboats - Looks like the Ship was listing heavily !!! Seriously Great Band ! saw the original band 4 or 5 times in the 70's best at what they did
I have recently been re-purchasing my old 'Gentle Giant' collection (vinyl) in the new re-mastered CD format. And re-discovering the beauty of many songs that Gentle Giant wrote. It's is so much fun to watch this video of 'Three Friends' playing live and see how many of the tunes that I have re-discovered show up in their set......It must be so great for Malcolm Mortimore to play this music after being side-lined from Gentle Giant after his car accident after recording the album Three Friends. It shows in his lively playing energy.
Great gig of THREE FRIENDS, here the timestamps, enjoy it: 01:30 Prologue 08:10 Mobile 13:40 Wreck 18:40 Just The Same 25:10 His Last Voyage 32:05 Alucard 40:10 I Lost My Head 47:30 The Advent Of Panurge 53:15 Schooldays 1:00:50 Mister Class And Quality 1:09:25 Proclamation (incomplete) I hope it is without mistakes. Please write me if it's not correctly.
Nothing in Prog Rock is Dated !!! ?? I don't know what you like, But ...... Classic Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, Jethro Tull, Nektar, ELP, Pink Floyd, GG etc Must I go on !!!
Wow! What an incredible band. Harsh light of day, no light display, just pure musicianship. Is there a band alive that can top this? I'm betting only Prince can give Three Friends a run for their money.
Thanks a million for recording and posting. My sister and I watched from overhead -- deck 15. One of my favorite and happiest moments of the entire festival.
In the 2000's, there are many tribute bands honoring bands like The Beatles, The Stones, and Genesis for example. I don't know of any Gentle Giant tribute bands. I am guessing the sheer technicality of the music is a real deal breaker! Couple that with finding five guys that can play so many instruments and the mammoth task of weaving as many instrument changes so smoothly into a set that has enough challenge to just play the material and you find it is a rare enough circumstance to keep the event of a GG tribute band down to a minimum of 0 as far as I know! Nonetheless, my heart thrills with every note played by this band! I am thankful for this extraordinary band of musicians!
There was a time when Kerry was in the band so it was logical to call them 3 Friends, it didn't make sense to change it after he left as logo's, T shirt's etc had all been created and paid for.
Only Gary Green? Was expecting three original members. Something sounds off from the beginning. I peg the drums. Anyway, cool to hear "Gentle Giant" live in the 21st century. Interesting choice of songs too (even Alucard, Schooldays, Mr. Class and Quality, wow).
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy, Because I'm easy come, easy go, Little high, little low, Anyway the wind blows doesn't really matter to me, to me.
The band is competent but the "magic" is not there, and the voice of Derek is clearly missed. He was the anchor, with the guide lines of brother Ray. Gary puts on a great effort and does an efficient job, but the keyboards lack Kerry s complexity and romantism. The lead singer, regret to say, does not fill the job.
These guys are doing a lot of tunes GG did not do live. I think they’re playing them with a lot of fire. If you think you can do better, I would love to hear your project.
Sorry. This isn't even close to Gentle Giant. The vocals are no good, and he's got to try to do 2 completely different vocalists. The way the songs are performed is too "loose." Yes, having Gary Greene helps, but overall thumbs down. Some of the "jams" are good, when there are no vocals.
Saw them over a dozen times in the seventies. Thank you Gary for bringing back the best music in the world. Nothing compares!

and original drummer Malcom Mortimer
I saw the 'real' band in '73. Changed my life.
i saw them 76. changed my life.
Oh, if only 5 friends could get together once more. :(
Or better still record some new material :-)

The sad and sweet little "Three friends" is hiding inbetween "Mister Class and Quality" and "Proclamation", starting around 1:06:38 .

The music is timeless, and Garry, Malcolm and friends more than do it justice.
Kudos to these guys for playing such difficult stuff AND Carrying it OFF!!!! YEA!!
It's good the legacy has been kept! Keep going!
We're lucky to be able to see this
Three Friends play material that Giant never played live, and they play it very well indeed.

the best band at that cruise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG - this is beyond words, magnificent :D
Unlike other prog rock from the seventies, this stuff is not dated. As someone else said, timeless!
Nothing in Prog Rock is Dated !!! ?? I don't know what you like, But ......

Must I go on !!!

He might join them for a song first...
Sad! Prince is no more. But Three Friends and Prince still amaze.
I was LUCKY ENUFF to catch Gentle Giant LIVE 2x==omg---These guys are GOOD!!!!
Thanks a million for recording and posting. My sister and I watched from overhead -- deck 15. One of my favorite and happiest moments of the entire festival.

The dream cruise.
47:37 The Advent of Panurge
wayne who are these bands from the 70s who sound dated id say they seem more relevant in these sub standard music age
Músicos acompanhantes com nível abaixo do Gentle Giant....mas pelo menos dá pra relembrar....
I think they should have stuck with the name "Rental Giant"
bad ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tracks and timestamp?
Wreck is amazing here
Where is the "h"??
Looks like this show was Two Friends, eh?
Two Blokes who Played in the Same Band for One Album.
But that's a bit too long for a band name.
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy,
Because I'm easy come, easy go,
Little high, little low,
Anyway the wind blows doesn't really matter to me, to me.

Is this just Fantasy?

Open your eyes, Look up to the skies and seeeeeee
The ratio of instruments per band member is appalling. 1/10
Where are the ICEBERGS when you need them ????????????????????????
