I love how unwavering Katara is in her desire to help those who cannot help themselves. There's so many layers to her character that we get to explore later, but this is a universal constant for her. She will never, ever turn her back on people who need her!
Sneaky quote in there
@@hominid3528 ;)
I'm Not CRAZY! I'm Tellin Yah, That Lemur Earth Bended I SWEAR! 😂
They are so lucky they ran into the _dumbest_ guys in the entire Fire Nation army.
🤣 just an amazing moment
I love the detail of how the earthbenders start fighting in the prison; Haru hasn't been there long, so it makes sense he would be the least afraid and throw the first punch (metaphorically). Then of course Haru's father would step up to protect his son when the guards retaliate. Finally, given how well respected Haru's father is among the prisoners, it makes sense that when he attacks the others follow his lead. Such a subtle detail they didn't need to put in, but it adds so much because they did.
It's kind of a running theme that the showrunners keep putting in these subtle details either in the main story or sometimes in what the characters are doing in the background that has nothing to do with the story but makes the characters really feel alive. And since it's animated there was no actor ad libbing, someone had to think about and animate it all.
No, the warden was voiced by George Takei, most well known for playing Sulu in the original Star Trek TV series and movies. If you're an old Trekkie, his voice is unmistakable. Gai was voiced by someone else, depending on whether you're talking about the English version or the Japanese version.
What?! Really?!
I was hoping someone would mention that he was voiced by Takei! Thank you lmao
Even without being a trekkie his voice is unmistakable after the first time you hear it.
He also voiced a neimoidian in an episode of The Clone Wars. The one where the Separatists were experimenting with a canon that destroyed all organic stuff but wouldn't harm the droids and they were testing it on the lemur aliens who were pacifists.
Someone already mentioned George Takei, so I'll mention that Tyro, Haru's father, is voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson, who notably voices the Mauler Twins in "Invincible", amongst many, many other things.
Nice. Thanks for pointing that out. We love seeing/hearing familiar VAs 😀
The reason why Aang hasn't worked on Earth bending is because the Avatar is supposed to learn the elements in the order of the cycle starting with what element he is born in. So Aang has already mastered air bending and Katara probably figures she doesn't know enough to teach him/might be unsure if she really understands it enough to teach at all so is waiting to find real masters in the North Pole to teach them.
"Mom energy Saka," and "I think we've yet to meet our Earthbender." But -- Earthbender Momo was introduced this episode!
😂 the best earthbender ever 🤩
Given some later revelations near the end of book 2 looking back on this episode is kind of funny in a way.
Others likely know but all I'll say is it relates to Aang's Earthbending teacher so look forward to it.
The best thing of all in this series is how they are good in recycling characters
For real, almost every side character does show up again later in the series at some point (I can't remember of any who didn't)
So after the goofy episode avatar again reminds you that the stakes are high by introducing slavery and vauge racism based on bending. The warden while bad is actually pretty funny in compareson to Zhao who as far as we know is just kinda a jackass. Also Zuko is back with Kataras necklace uh oh.
"That brutish **savagery** that passes as bending among **you people**"
In reality, I would think Aang would be picking up whatever he can learn at this point XD. But I think they set that aside for the simpler format of the show. (I see other comments saying there's an order, but I think it was more to structure the show than anything else, since it's not like he's formally learning)
This show definitely delivers on the characters! Looking forward to more reactions
The warden did say "if you treat me with the same respect I give you." and then got mad when someone interrupted his speech, he did in fact let Katara finish her speech without interruption. I guess he does practice what he preaches. haha nice catch. "we don't interrupt speeches around here" had me dying. lol
Highly recommend remembering this episode of the prison made of metal when you watch the Avatar movie
Or, just never watch the movie. Save those minutes of your life doing something more useful like watching paint dry or grass grow.
Katara’s speech seemed a bit too on-the-nose but wow, it really hurts when nobody responded..and that was also a important part of the worldbuilding because it is really hard to bring people "back" from the darkness called.. "Spirit broken" cause you can really see that.
Finally new reaction 😎👏
why they attacke wel you will found out in book 3
This is one of the few episodes I usually skip on a rewatch, a very important episode, but something about it makes it hard to want to rewatch.
That fire general sounds a bit like Might Guy for me I don't know why.
Sleepy dog.
It's interesting how you mentioned Sokka having 'mom energy' this episode, because they did lose their mother and then their father left to join the war along with most of the able-bodied adults of the village, so they did have to grow up fast and take on parental roles to help the younger children left in the village. Generally you see Katara taking on a motherly role and Sokka trying to take on a fatherly role according to their culture. Katara cares for and helps people in need and Sokka tends to be stressing about keeping everyone he's responsible for safe or trying to achieve the larger plan. But of course these are just the concepts they've assigned to themselves, some of their concepts and roles will be challenged throughout the show.
😎👍😊
Oh don't y'all worry. Aangs' earthbending teacher is worth the wait 😁
Nice 😅
To put it mildly :D
No spoilers please, I want to see their blind reaction to it. :D
When he screamed “FOR THE EARTH KINGDOM ATTACK!” First time seeing that I was hyped and I screamed “LETS GO!”
😎🤘
Zuko will always be my 2nd fav character in this show, Sokka is my #1. The storytelling in this show is soo good.
Good first and second for sure. Mines iron first, then sokka. Them zuko
I'm sure you guys just forgot, but the teams plan is to find a waterbending master at the north pole to teach both Aang and Katara. They're also just focusing on learning waterbending which is why the didn't ask Bomi about earthbending.
"You have to master water, then earth, then fire, right?"
Yep. Totally forgot . Whoops 🤭😬🤗
Cool reaction 👍 Will there be another reaction today? 🤔
My head canon is that the traitorous old man that turned Haru in gets exiled from the village.
By Haru's dad.
The good guys are EXTREMELY merciful in the Avatar universe
This is definitely Katara's episode, but Sokka is very underrated in this. He's _kind_ of the one who actually _gets_ Katara in the prison, and he's arguably singlehandedly the reason the prisoners got to escape _at all_ .
Sokka being underrated seems to be theme. He keeps getting more impressive 🙂
The Warden is voiced by George Takei, best known for portraying Sulu in the original Star Trek series. He's talked a lot about how, when he was a boy, he and his family were forced to live in the Japanese internment camps during WWII.
Can believe we didn’t recognize him instantly 😖
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 OOOOOH MYYY!
For this episode, _Imprisoned_ , I always like to give some context, being as I am from a country which has an established, strongly present, and very well known history with this kind of stuff. Fair warning: it is heavy stuff, but also definitely important I would say.
So: during the Nazi occupation of Europe, virtually all occupied countries had their own offshoot of the Nazi Party, which -governed- sorry, ruled, the occupied nation on the German Nazi Party's behalf. (I learned relatively recently that Poland was pretty much the sole exception to this, as they were ruled directly by the NSDAP, the National-Sozialistische Deutsche Arbeiter Partei, aka the German Nazi Party ["National-Sozialism" being where the abbreviation "Nazi"/"Nazism" comes from; and "Deutsch" being German, for, well........ "German"]).
My country of the Netherlands, for example, was under German occupation ruled by the NSB, the "Nationaal-Socialistische Bond".
Now, during the occupation, all occupied countries would see the emergence of people who were not in fact directly associated with the local/national Nazi Party, but who would still do anything and everything to aid the Nazis in whatever way the Nazis desired. This to include betraying their own countrymen to the Nazis, and even betraying those countrymen who had helped, or even saved, such people in the past. It is widely believed that Anne Frank was betrayed by just such a person, leading to her being shipped off by train to the Concentration Camps and her eventual death at just age 15.
Why they did these things, we can only speculate. Maybe it's because they thought the Nazis would reward them in some way, or maybe they were scared of being targeted (and potentially ending up on one of "those" trains) themselves.
At any rate, the countries of Europe called these people by a French word: collaborateurs. It means exactly what a native English speaker would guess it means.
The point being: the old man from _Imprisoned_ is a textbook collaborateur. And I do mean: *_textbook_* . As in: if there was a textbook about the role of collaborateurs in WWII, it would be liable to have a picture of this old guy next to it, along with a description of what he did to Haru.
Another interesting aspect is why the Fire Nation cracked down so ruthlessly on Earthbending. The obvious reason is of course the potential threat the Fire Nation might fear was posed by the Earthbenders.
But I feel that there is more to it than that. All the way back in episode 1, you might recall that Katara and Sokka described Waterbending as such: "An ancient art, unique to our culture." And the Warden in this episode used these words to describe Earthbending: "employing that brutish savagery that passes for Bending among you people". I feel that, alongside the military threat or the threat of rebellion, the Fire Nation was also intending to eliminate Earthbending with the goal of eliminating the Earth Kingdom culture itself. Both because they view that culture as "savagery"; and also for the purposes of being better able to replace the resulting "culture void" with their own Fire Nation culture which they of course view as "superior".
All of this is Fascism 101.
Norway had their own term. Quisling.
The earthbending teacher will come and it's going to be glorious. Aang's earthbending teacher is my favorite character in the show. Which is a high bar with how incredible 98% of them are
Also, the Warden in this episode was voiced by the legendary George Takei!
George Takei played the warden perfectly. One can assume that he pulled from his own childhood, where he was raised in an internment camp
When it comes to the avatar learning new bending, it goes in the cycle so fire, air, water, earth. With the avatar mastering their original element then going to the next one for example a fire avatar would then master air bending. This doesn’t mean they can’t learn one of the other elements earlier but it is best to master them along the cycle to better be prepared for each new element and be more prepared.
This was the first time I found out American pronounce "cretin" as "Cretan"!
This show is an experience guys.. enjoy it. Best show ever🔥 keep watching
Hey ken and Bethany I would like to give you one of my call of duty games so you can play it on stream do you have a PO box? I have black ops Cold war the one you reacted to
Thanks, enjoyed your reaction.
It would not be nice to have an Earth Bender in the team? Can you just imagine how cool would that be?
I remember the Playstation 2 game of Avatar, the last airbender where Haru joins the part. My guess is that it takes place between Book 1 and 2.
Zuko’ story
Is what makes this show a masterpiece
Wouldn’t think that going in 😯
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Trust me, he's character arc is the best!
Zuko's arc and Momo's earth bending journey.
I mean it’s good yes but that’s kinda a spoiler dude….
Also there is ALOT more that makes this show great aside from that
Don't worry, we get a much better earth bender but I think it's in season 2
