- Sooo....we are on the 17th apartment already!! the struggle bus of nyc apartment hunting continues.... feeling very very discouraged BUT not giving up!! In this very chatty nyc moving series, we tour 7 apartments in manhattan, provide insights during the viewings & give updates for my current apartment (1st nyc apartment).
I will be posting a detailed apartment hunting video similar to the last time ( • NYC APARTMENT HUNTING ... . I thought it would be fun to take you along from the beginning!!!
My lease ends only end of February but I am breaking my lease early because of the ongoing issues and back and forth with my current building management.

The way New York landlords are ripping off their tenants with filthy, unsafe and disgusting apartments infuriates me!
its crazy out here!!!
How about the greed that these building owners have to chop up a building into these tiny awkward layouts so they get more money no matter how ridiculous the apartments are for actually living in? No laundry would be a deal breaker for me. But that one apt that had laundry in a seedy looking basement. Not safe at all. Don't give up! The One will show up like a lot of commenters say. We know it will happen 'cuz it happened to us.
I really appreciate how thorough you are on these - such good reminders for checking under sinks, looking for gaps + leaking water, etc, and including tips for looking at rental history and potential issues. Really helpful!!

Tisha don’t break your resolve in moving out. Keep looking at places and worst case scenario move back to jc. The waterfront view from jersey is amazing and commute to work will be easier.

HAPPY NEW YEAR Miss Tisha!!! Why aren’t you exploring apartments in UPTOWN, Manhattan--HARLEM, WASHINGTON HEIGHTS (stay west of BROADWAY)!!! There are plenty of large apartments (some apartments renovated with washer/dryer) in elevated buildings with laundry rooms that are within your price range and very close to public transportation (#1, A, B and C trains and several public buses that go downtown)!!! Also WASHINGTON HEIGHTS has a Bus Station with commuter buses that go into New Jersey!!! Happy Apartment hunting!!!

What bothers me about these apartment tours is the simple fact that you are shown units that are dirty with damaged areas. That is infuriating. Do these landlords have no shame? They have a super/handymen. I would be embarrassed to show a property in that condition. Plus, the staircase and outside of the unit was dirty. Eww. That second unit had a decent kitchen. Landlords need to start showing move in ready apartments, not those needing repairs and cleaning. The kitchen layouts are cringe. Are you okay with a higher floor walk-up? Portable washer and dryer might be something to consider. That apartment with the saturation on the hallway ceilings means that it has the potential of caving in and crashing down. Are you looking through StreetEasy as a backup? I would never pay that gas bill for the building. Department of Buildings is your friend. Utilize them.

Hey Tisha, I really hope you find a good option. I believe that you should continue looking instead of staying at your place, and I think that any place where you feel a good vibe, that’s the one. You might have to commit certain things but safety it’s never an option.

I’m loving that Lenox Hill apt. Whatever happens, it’s going to work out just as it should. The right place will turn up. Though, you’ll be super lucky if it isn’t a walk up! Your instincts are spot on, I only did the walk up thing (4th floor) on weekends and it is a hassle! Looking forward to more apt hunting videos!😘

Why don't you consider looking around LIC or Astoria? They are both located very close to Manhattan.

If you do find an apartment you like but there are gaps between the wall and the floor, you could ask them to put some quarter round down and it will cover them up. Just know that even if you do cover them up you’ll still have a cockroach here and there those nasty things have a way of getting in especially in the city.

Living most of my life in Florida & seeing how expensive & how much of a difference these apartments are compared to the ones over here I don’t think I could ever move to NYC.

Yeah, I think there were 2 or 3 which were quite charming...Quirky layouts but doable...Maybe not as spacious as shes looking for but in the end with these things its really hard to find all aspects you want...Although obv if you still have time its worth continuing to look for a place you really like!

None of these apartments are outright terrible, but none of them are great either. I guess I liked #15 the best despite the stinky lobby, with #13 as runner up. (Maybe I just love fireplaces? lol) I get why you want to live in Manhattan even though you could get a better place further out. I would choose Manhattan too. ;-) #16 felt "off" because it was so badly chopped up. Did you notice the big beautiful Victorian window hidden behind the cheap shower stall?-Terrible feng shui AND disgusting aesthetics. I hate that kind of thing and maybe you do too! Even just subconsciously, it feels sad to see lovely architecture desecrated by greedy slumlords. Anyway--whatever flat you get, the first thing you should do when you get the key--besides clean--is CAULK everything! Right?? GOOD LUCK!! I know you'll find the right place for you. p.s. In #16, that was an original Victorian latch on the built-in cabinet!

Why don’t you consider Brooklyn or even Ridgewood? You can get so much more space for your budget, in a cooler neighborhood

The first apartment looked dirty and the condition of the laundry room and path to it didn't look well-maintained. Window views were dreary. I'd pass on it. Makes me appreciate my 1,800 sq.ft. home in Wisconsin and my mortgage is a 1/4 those rents.
As a non American what is a broker fee? Seems like a way to get more money out of you
Broker is a real estate agent who handles the viewings and application process. Typically tenant has to pay the broker fee which is sometimes 1 month rent or 10 to 18% of the annual rent. This fee is so bizzare...tenant does all the hard work to find these apartments and the broker shows the apartment (represents the owner) and we end up paying this fee. There are also apartments that do not come with broker fee but majority of it comes with the broker fee
A brick wall and/or a fireplace are nice features.

Hi I just subscribed to your channel. R you still looking for an apartment in Manhattan. There's this youtube channel called ' Cash Jordan' - he reviews Manhattan apartments. One of his video living in Manhattan for $800 . Check it out this woman has great tips on where to find apartments in Manhattan and the best money saving tips.
I relate to “the one that got away.” Back in 2020 I found “the one.” Perfect rent controlled, laundry in unit, recently remodeled 1 bedroom apt here in San Francisco for $1995! I hesitated and took the night to think it over. In the morning, it was gone. I kicked myself for years. More so because I have not seen any rents on 1 bedrooms for under $2k since that one. Now, where I live, I have to walk by that apartment on my way to work. I have seen how rough the neighborhood has gotten. The apartment is on the first floor and the windows are always close. I love to let sunlight in and I wouldn’t have been able to in that apartment. I’ve come to realized it wasn’t meant to be and it was for the better.
Also, not legal advice but for deposits when a landlord refuses to return them, there’s Small Claims. It is rough to invest time and money but it’s an option and it sounds like you have paper trails -Friendly Words From a Paralegal 😉

Yeah and going through this sort of experence can be so detrimental to your mental health...And you always live in that anxiety of having to go through it again...Its definitely not normal to have to go through such struggles just to have a safe place to live!!

For your budget I'd prefer JC. Some of those apartments look dark and claustrophobic. The prices are out of control
JC is expensive too but definitely better & cleaner options compared to the city
My son recently moved to New York- Manhattan. He rented a really cute studio apartment with beautiful hardwood floors and brick walls on one side. He did not notice until he moved in that there was no stove. Frig, dishwasher, microwave but NO stove. I had never heard of something like that.

You will find the right one in time, please don't get any walk up,in building laundry should be non negotiable.

I'm really enjoying coming along in your journey of looking at apartments. It's funny because I'm from Texas and when you showed that closet space, I was like, that's huge!! Closets here are typically the size of the bathroom in NYC if not bigger for apartments. I hope you find your apartment soon. The one you really liked that got rented was not meant to be and looking at your commute time and having to go to work more often...it was probably for the best!

Girl, do not do a 5th floor walk-up. I'm on the 4th floor with a puppy (yes i'm the JC transplant from IG!) AND its tough.
Also, dont move back to JC. Hustle and push yourself, you will find something! You jsut need to move FAST, like, if you see an apt you like today, apply for it, yesterday LOL

I can’t imagine anyone settling to live in the majority of these spots if these were in Southern California. Holy cow some of them are so dirty looking and dingy! It is so unacceptable to me! What people have come to just accept because it’s New York. I feel like we have so many apartment complex communities that have basically brand new features, it’s become so commonplace!

A apartment which is light but grubby is better than a dark newly decorated one If its light with one closet you can clean it or paint but Grubby is relative you can't live with pet cockroach as it will have a little family ie if there's one there's more Small light better large dark Got Luck in finding something

I'm sorry to hear you didn't get the apartment you wanted. Why didn't you apply for it right away instead of overthinking it? Altho.. Maybe something even better is waiting right around the corner! :) That's how I usually think when I understand I have not listened to my intuition. Good luck in the future. I'm not sure what you're attached to in New York, but all these apartments were very substandard and many barely livable. I hope you will consider some more relaxing parts of the country and your health. It's not necessary to struggle so much for so little.
Oh my goodness. NY has the ugliest apartments. Nasty and dirty with weird layouts at ridiculous high rent. I dont understand the thrill living in NY. That's just me.

I LOVE that I get to see all the apts I've been seeing on streeteasy, in your vlog because I really can't make the viewings lol Apt hunting is a nightmare. I've never had so much trouble finding one in the city. I have found that more buildings on the west side, hell's kitchen, have laundry in the building and some have elevators. You'll find your gem soon.

I live in Europe and i find it incomprehensible that so much rent is charged for very small and depressing apartments. You can’t call these kitchens can you. And then the view of some apartments is also strange. Facing a wall and a window with bars. Good luck with your search.

I live in the Pocono's after having moved from Maspeth, Queens, NY years ago. Have you considered a move to Queens? Maspeth is a nice place and near Brooklyn and Manhattan (also Long Island). On Grand Avenue there are lots of shops and restaurants. The stores have apartments above them and the buses run along Grand Ave and you can get almost anywhere. Rents are probably comparable to Manhattan, as well. Wishing you lots of luck in finding your new residence! I Enjoy watching your videos.
Thank you for the suggestion 🙏 . I have to commute to office 1 to 2 times a week. I work in Jersey and Maspeth would be a bit far me. Certain areas in Brooklyn & Queen should work from commute perspective but for first few years i really want to live in Manhattan
@@TishaShrestha Yes, it's a distance from Maspeth to Jersey. My uncle used to commute to northern NJ every day. He took a bus from Maspeth into Brooklyn, then a train from Brookyln to Port Authority, then the NJ transit bus to his job. Hope you find a place you love! Wishing you luck.

How do you get a broker to call you back??? My daughter needs to move to Manhattan within the month and yet send introduction and no one ever calls or texts back!
I have been using streeteasy and Zillow. I have the same issues. I send a bunch of tour requests for different listing but only few responds. Good luck with your daughters move ✨✨✨
Finally started receiving lots of callbacks last week with texts to brokers (50% response rate) in bullet form: credit score, salary, job title, employer, move-in date, pets/no pets, # of tenants applying, children/no children, AND stating have ready to send bank, tax, and (if needed) guarantor information. Nix the tour requests and just direct text the brokers. Hope this helps!! My daughter should be signing her lease by tomorrow. @@TishaShrestha
