There's a lot of genius in Sly's drumming but a lot of hard work too. You can't just show up and do this it's the fruit of years of experience. It's almost as if the drum kit is a part of his body in the way that Hendrix's guitar was part of his body. And, thanks Jah, he shows no signs of losing his incredible powers. Thanks for this stunning little compilation Guillaume!
Ya think?? Lol🤣 Besides seeing him live up close, 2 of my go-to performances to watch are Shine Eye Gal & Sensimilla live in Essen 1981. The 3 headed monster that was him, Robbie & Darryl Thompson on lead guitar was simply incredible. 🔥
@@smoothoperator7023 You watched his videos as a fan . I've known Sly from the Channel One days . They rehearsed at our complex in Jamaica for the 81 Sunsplash tribute to Bob , with Black Uhuru where I got to see them up close, as well as Marcia Griffiths and Israel Vibration and Jimmy Riley . You are not talking to some fan like yourself. Relax
New musical styles, children of the sampler and digital revolution, can inspire new styles of drumming, never imagined before. He is playing grooves usually programmed. I think a great drummer like him proves that no change is a threat if understood as opportunity. Same for keyboard players, btw (check out Didi Gutman from Brazilian Girls)
Nicolas Guerrieri This comment is 8 years old, but the crazy thing about Sly is he was that tight in 1975... when I first heard his drumming as a teenager into reggae, I thought his drumming WAS a drum machine.
Qinguana. The sound is like that because that's how it is on stage. You don't get the sound all nice and clean and balanced by the engineers like you do out front. Shows how hard it is for musicians because they don't hear exactly what you hear on the floor. But they're used to it. I wanna know what the second tune is with the lyrics "one love". Iknow th etune but don't know what it is. Anyone??
Guillaume Bougard any idea what kind of snare head he uses to produce that sound? I’ve heard he uses a Kevlar head but this one doesn’t look Kevlar to me
@@t-man5196 hi, I forwarded your question to Sly and he got back with the following I don’t remember what snare I was using with junior Reid.I love Remo pin stripe.I use any head but Ludwig snare is the best.I like Canopus snare. The head I like is duraline a yellow skin, they have studio & concert. hope it helps
Ruud Langezaal what's not so good about producing 100s of hit songs you could respect that I hope. Sly achieved more then most considerably good drummer. It may be more then what meet the eye in some respective. I do understand reggae is played and conducted much differently then the usual. Try going to a reggae event it will most likely shift your prospective.
@@aaronz7267 You are talking nonsense. I have yet to see many other drummers able to play the steady and complex rhythms that Sly Dunbar plays in all genres. This is just one of many types of styles that he plays. Why is he the most prolific drum session player in all modern music history, playing on at least 50,000 records? www.redbullmusicacademy.com/lectures/sly-and-robbie-twins-peak Get out a metronome and watch his consistent precison, through all the shifts of a musical piece, for long periods of time. That was, and is, why he is so highly valued by professional musicians.
LOL...Sly Dunbar executes and drums as freely and naturally as you breathe. Nothing stiff and/or uncomfortable about him. He looks that way because it's effortless to him. Still LOL at you!

THE DAM DUMMER ALL SLY DUNBAR BIG UP EVERY TIME ROOTS ROCK AND REGGAE MUSIC GoingLIVING LEGEND 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹🦁🦁🦁 DUMMER AND BASELINE
This is pure gold - amazing seeing the trademark fills, breakdowns and grooves here.
This man is the standard when it comes to reggae drumming. No other drummer shifted the direction and sound of a genre of music as much as Sly.
Understatement.

It looks so easy :-)
thats because he isnt that good of a drummer,,, reggae really isnt the type of music to show off drumming talent.. but i still love the music

He looks very stiff and uncomfortable when he drums
you have a great sense of humor
