I have a professional Carpenter for 40 years & recently a keen model boat builder, but not the fibreglass type, only timber, so I'm going to build a steamer now, great video, regards Kenny , Dundee, Scotland
Awesome! Thanks a million for making this. It's exactly how I would want this to be as far as materials, time and fuss-free construction. And you're a good teacher because you are capable, unassuming and funny (for me at least - I had a laugh about the weather stripping). Bravo.
5 Star kudos to you Laney. Succinct, humourous, clear. Just bought that Rockler device on Amazon. Will combine formed wood, metal acid etching, welding and artistic flare in support of the creative impulse. Thank you for your forthright demonstration ...
Wow Laney, that box is the cat's meow! I like how you made the legs. Another thought, between steaming procedures, this thing could be modified as a rabbit trap! And I still like the keekers, who think this would be good for hot dogs for a large crowd. Have a good one!
wesome yours is the same as mine...had for bout 4 years now and it works awesome...i used a hot plate revamped to 240 volts to heat a large kettle of water so it lasts longer...i can steam up to 1.5 inch peaces of lumber...ive also built a bending table with bearings to bend peaces to a circular configuration witch worked great for me...awesome vid...thanks for sharring
Guуs I just found a gооd wеbsite whiсh givеs уоu free_steаm_wallеt_сard_с0dеs twitter.com/3ae1c8b374700f7c8/status/719079525670395904?ddcPeOj=e86fe379-940c-4e26-b49b-9ede25e02f6d Build A Steаm Bеnding Boх
so clear and complete , dont have any dubt , thanks a lot , now i can get my own box steamer from myself , I really apreciate you .....my challenge is to built classical guitars . you are the bigger
Rick, on the door of the box is a vent hole and in the rear of the box is a "Drain Hole" so the water and condensation that builds up has a place to run out.. So the plastic tray was there to catch the drain water.
very good video, helps so much am using a steam shower generator that the people didn't like in their shower said " it mad them hot " huh ???? anyway, am building an o gauge railway inside my log cabin house that will run through the chimney with an arch bridge in front of the tunnel for a siding or to allow passing trains to not colloid with each on the main line, also i do a lot of custom projects for folks that require bending this will really help in those projects, the simpler the better in explaining things works so much better for people like me that have see and feel what there trying to build it's like " plan it as you go building. " and for the most part it comes out really nice, thanks Kevin
Nice job! I’ve been wanting to do this as well but want to see the steam generator in action before I buy one. Thanks for the video. Very helpful! , Lauren
Looks like a very useful tool for your shop. I have always wanted to make a bent hook hat rack. This would be the perfect way to start. Can't wait to see what you make. I know it will be great!!
Thanks for the great video and tips Laney! Just wondering, what is considered optimal temperature to achieve for bending wood approximately 1" in diameter?
I made a steam box recently, i found that having the top removable a big help, also a few small leaks are not really a problem. Bending the wood is the tricky bit, anything above an inch is quite difficult. I am keen to see how you get on. I made some double bow Windsor rocking chairs, what are you planning to make?
This is one of the great teaching videos! Thank you. Do you have any thoughts, now that you've had it for a few years, on what lumber to use? Do you think it matters? Great work.
I was considering picking up a used pressure cooker (with good gaskets of course) and then using my outdoor turkey fryer stand and my bottled gas to heat the water inside the cooker. A hose for the steam would then connect to my box. Your plan looks a bit less involved....I need to rethink my original idea. Thanks!
I just finished by box but didn't make the hole for the thermometer. It occurred to me, if I see steam coming out of the indicator hole I drilled in the door, it's at about 212 F since that's the temp water converts to steam. So why a thermometer? Thanks. Great video as are your others BTW.
12 inch 6ft pvc pipe a few holes tap a dowel through those holes, pvc caps. One cap cut 1 inch hole attach 1 high temp hose to the other cap seal on. Drill a .25 drain hole lowest point. Steel can water. You see where I'm going.
My experience shows the weather stripping will come off. Also the door will warp. Door needs to be much thicker material and have 2 door latches, one at each corner.
5:50 where did you by the brass fitting from, impossible to find the same in the UK. I believe you need a 1/4” BSP thread to connect to a Wagner wallpaper stripper hose.
Surely there needs to be an air escape to prevent pressure building up? and also prevent pressure blowing steam back into the steam source, traditional steam boxes just use rags to block the majority of steam escaping. Another point would be to watch that the steam doesn't bend/warp the box itself, steel tube works well. I like the idea using the wall paper stripper as a steam source.
I love that you included a blooper. Nice work and thanks for the tips. Do you think plumbing the steam entry from the bottom gives any advantage/disadvantage since steam rises?
I was looking around and have a question about bending wood. I built a steam box. Please excuse my lack of proper terms . I am wanting to bend a piece of wood for sides of a "box" basically a heart shape....I want the front and backs to fit into the sides that I bend. Can I put a dado into the sides of the wood to be bent so that the front and back fit into it so that I can have them even....??
I read that the box don't have to be watertight to prevent pressure build up ,the steam bending process consist on saturating the wood fibers withs a hop vapor with out being under pressure.
Thank you Laney. I have thought about trying this quite a few times but I just don't seem to get around to it. Sound familiar to all of you wood workers out there? Thanks for the great video Laney. Derek
Great instructions, & very good info, am interested in making 25" wine-like barrels & this video is very helpful. Expect to catch up on the follow ups, any advise greatly appreciated.
Nice i'm building one that's 5' long 6"x6" inside that should work. my question is can you bend purple heart strip 1/4" x 1/8" around a circle?for a inlay?
If you do encounter leaks, rather than using tape to seal - which will eventually fail - you can try an old boat building trick and just force some fine sawdust into the area that is leaking. As the wood expands it will seal itself.
In the uk we have walpaper steamers that are the same as the steamer you showed, would just have to buy brass connector and good to go, thanks for sharing
So far it hasn't.. The plan recommended exterior grade lumber, but I didnt have any in the shop... if anything happens to the box, I will repair it.. but so far so good, knock on wood.. nothing gone wrong yet
Hi there, saw your video and it was verry helpfull, but do you no of a web site or book that could help me in the veriouse woods and recommended steaming times?? Any advice or help wood be greatly appreciated.
cutting triangles or any other kind of "landscape" into the raisers from the upper side will increase the steam even more to circulate around your wood. :-)
Hi Laney - any chances you can make a detailed video of how to build a basic gothic window frame : ) Basic two wood planks bended at the top ?! Thanks for yr uploads Cheers
I have a question. In the website of the seller there are only some of the tools you're using. Is it easy to find the others? Like that particular thermometer or the gasket?
this is just what I need ,for my Oak rocker arm rest`s I`m building , my arm rest are 23and 1/2 " long , by 3 " wide by 2 and 1/2 thick ,with a 2" drop ,could you make something like that for me ? how do I get a hold you ?
There is no need to use hot water. If you use water from the cold tap, the molecules move around faster as they heat up. Hot water will just sit there and cool till the heating element catches up to the temp of water. At this point the molecules have slowed down. This is something I learned on a cooking show many years ago and confirmed by a science teacher years later.
Gives the cook time for the water to heat up whilst he has another drink...so it must be right. Try timing a kettle from cold to boiling and then after five mins of cooling time back to boiling again. Its not really science, is it
Is there a certain size box that you have to make for your steamer you have? can you make it bigger? or what is the maximum you can make the steam box?
Laney Was the thickness of the dowels for a reason or could some 12 the diameter work. Might provide bit little better circulation. Cant wait to see it in action.

Build a Steam Box... The first step into the new venture of bending wood. Stay tuned for next weeks project. My first attempt at Steam Bending
John Bump avoid kiln-dried lumber... the kiln-drying process is to detour the lumber from warping... it also hinders the bending process.
Laney Shaughnessy I would love to see a video of this box in action, have you had any luck with it yet

wrong type of steam there mr. scammer.
Laney Shaughnessy good job Brother. . . . Thanks. . . . And keep doing this. . .

I have seen and made steam boxes but like the way you did this one am going to build one just like yours Thanks for the idea.
I look forward to building the very same box with the Rockler steam kit. Thanks for the video.
Nice job! I’ve been wanting to do this as well but want to see the steam generator in action before I buy one. Thanks for the video. Very helpful! , Lauren

Thanks for the great video and tips Laney! Just wondering, what is considered optimal temperature to achieve for bending wood approximately 1" in diameter?
Laney, do you have a follow-up video? Couldn't find one in your library.
Nice simple, clear instructions. Good video.
I just made mine and it turned out great 😊👍👍 thank you much for the video.

Very informational and definitely good knowledge. I am going to get into wood working and was wondering how to build one of these. Thanks so much.
This is great! Looks simple and very easy,
Thank you
this is a easy project, as explained in a way that i understood, thank you
You did an excellent job on your presentation.
Well done.

Laney,
How come your thermometer does not read, pine, maple, walnut and other woods?
I hope you like this.
I came here for Valve's steambox! Lol. Nice job btw!

Perfect will be making one of these for straightening sticks will work a treat, thanks for the idea great video....
I just bought this same kit can not wait to build it
nice job, well presented, easy tounderstand --- Thank you from Queensland Au
I read that the box don't have to be watertight to prevent pressure build up ,the steam bending process consist on saturating the wood fibers withs a hop vapor with out being under pressure.
Good afternoon, where can I get the machine to generate steam, what technical name can I get it under?
Very well done indeed. Looking forward to future videos. I’m hoping to start making walking sticks and canes. Maybe a Shepherds crook.
Great video. My only question is should you line the box with plastic or epoxy? Obviously the box is wood so it’s going to absorb steam too.
Cool film, like the box. Will build one before too long. Well done, you have another subscriber in me.
Thank you Laney. I have thought about trying this quite a few times but I just don't seem to get around to it. Sound familiar to all of you wood workers out there? Thanks for the great video Laney.
Derek
Thanks for that Laney. Just what I was after. I've got a bunch of steam bending projects to do on my channel but I've never done steam bending before.
I would like to thank you for showing how to build a steam box do you think i could use a pressure cooker for steam ?
Great instructions, & very good info, am interested in making 25" wine-like barrels & this video is very helpful. Expect to catch up on the follow ups, any advise greatly appreciated.
Awesome News Rick!! Congrats! also check 5:20 - 5:30 where I mention the drain hole
Awesome...new project to add to my wood working...TY😁
Très bon travail, très bien expliqué ,je vais faire exactement comme vous !!! Merci
lol, when not using it for wood bending projects, you could steam vegetables or try steaming some bbq. i think this project will go on my to do list.
Awesome video Laney!
Very simple and welldone, congratulations
Great video! nice project, very clear instructions. you have a new subscriber, and i can't wait to see whats next.
I enjoyed the straight forward presentation. Thanks!
Greate proyect, can you say me what kind of the Steam machines you use, I will try to make some like that thanx
Can you install SteamOS on it?
This is the real world where real men do - not pretend world where boys play makebelieve
Add an ARM microcontroller, and yes, you can.
Though I can't justify a need for anything more than a basic arduino.
Nice i'm building one that's 5' long 6"x6" inside that should work. my question is can you bend purple heart strip 1/4" x 1/8" around a circle?for a inlay?
Thank you very much. This video help me with some projects i´ve to do to the university
Great vid. Keep up the good work. Your vids are always entertaining.
Great and looks easy. Where can you buy the kit for this box.
Good stuff! I'm wanting to bend plank's for a canoe or small sailboat hull. Any advice?
Good idea!. Can you show us the machine you have behind the steam bending box please?. Saludos desde Ecuador.
If you do encounter leaks, rather than using tape to seal - which will eventually fail - you can try an old boat building trick and just force some fine sawdust into the area that is leaking. As the wood expands it will seal itself.
In the uk we have walpaper steamers that are the same as the steamer you showed, would just have to buy brass connector and good to go,
thanks for sharing
+Steven Reynolds thank you for watching and taking the time to comment...
Howdy, great stuff. Do you have a materials list handy?
So far it hasn't.. The plan recommended exterior grade lumber, but I didnt have any in the shop... if anything happens to the box, I will repair it.. but so far so good, knock on wood.. nothing gone wrong yet
hey man thanks for your step by step info - - - - very pro - very clear!!!! keep 'em coming
ej south texas
Well done, building my box next week, thank you.
And what temperature did you use for bending guitar side’s approximately 2 mm in thickness
Great video my friend. What kind of wood did you use? Thanks
Cool, I was always told that I guess ya learn something new every day. Thanks
Cool video. Do you know if the steam system you bought has a heating element or just runs the line voltage through the water to heat it?
Hi there, saw your video and it was verry helpfull, but do you no of a web site or book that could help me in the veriouse woods and recommended steaming times?? Any advice or help wood be greatly appreciated.
Super steam box build video! When I get my new shop addition finished I'll be ready to try it! How long a time can you steam with that container?
Looks great. What wood did you use to make it? How long would a 1 inch thick piece of hard maple take to be ready to bend using you system?
cutting triangles or any other kind of "landscape" into the raisers from the upper side will increase the steam even more to circulate around your wood. :-)
at school we used fir plywood and lined it with paper thin copper sheets. works great. nice video by the way
Hi Laney - any chances you can make a detailed video of how to build a basic gothic window frame : ) Basic two wood planks bended at the top ?! Thanks for yr uploads
Cheers
It was just the size i had in my shop Steven, you could go with thinner... I would probably recommend no less the 3/8" dowel..
How did that steamer work for you, i just got one and im not sure it will be powerfull enough
I have a question. In the website of the seller there are only some of the tools you're using. Is it easy to find the others? Like that particular thermometer or the gasket?
Interesting project Laney - Thanks !
Nice project ,If you have an old wallpaper steamer that will work also.
Thanks Laney
Roland
very good box and can make it longer, cool
Hi Laney
What is the best timber to use to build the box with?.
What type of wood is best to use for the box?
this is just what I need ,for my Oak rocker arm rest`s I`m building , my arm rest are 23and 1/2 " long , by 3 " wide by 2 and 1/2 thick ,with a 2" drop ,could you make something like that for me ? how do I get a hold you ?
Great stuff my brother
Very good idea, have to give it a try
Hello Laney wanted to know if the grip you use with holes above is sold or is your invention
thanks
Excellent. Love the video, very helpful

This was very informative. Thanks for the info
Laney

round plastic tube 12 inch dia. by 8/10' with caps whole in caps for steam in or out
Bad idea , to hot for the plastic, i saw a video Of this !!
Can you technically make a large verticla box for wime barrel making as opposed to the tradiitonal fire method?
I'm honestly not sure on that one. I wish I had the answer.
