Thanks for covering this game, it got me and a friend to play it over Tabletop Simulator, and then he bought it for me as a birthday gift. We just finished the "campaign mode" today, and the "secret content" was wild enough to be damn near horrifying. But we beat it! And we're hoping to play it a whole lot more.
Shame that this game isn't an easy recommend for Sonic fans who don't play board games. This could have been perfect for one of my friends but "finicky" is anathema to them.
If I set this up in front of someone that doesn't play hobby board games, I think they'd immediately ask to do something else, lol. Not saying there can't be a complicated Sonic themed board game, but like... This is a lot.
This looks pretty good for a sonic board game compared to other sonic board games I have seen. Ps I think you prozd would be a fun knuckles in like a cartoon or anime
Its interesting because its rated only a 2.0 on BGG which means its not like "Connect 4" but its on the easier side of complexity. I think I remember hearing about this game though
Remember that BGG is mostly hobbyist board gamers who are _very_ familiar with how board games work and tend to underestimate how complicated a game can be. SungWon is definitely beyond a casual board gamer but I think he comes at these videos from a very middle-ground position; he's like a pro who's reviewing these games for rookies. He uses his knowledge to pierce through the confusing aspects and bring these games to people who might not have seen them, whereas people weighing board game complexity on BGG are doing it _purely_ for themselves. Like 'well it wasn't very complex _to me_ so I will rate it low".
I love this game. But boy. Oh boy. Is it a learning curve to figure out all the rules. I found that once I grasped all of them though, I actually found that it’s easier once you know all the rules really well. So it’s one of those games where the rules are complex enough that remembering all of them is a mechanic unto itself. But once you do have a solid understanding I actually think that it can become extremely modular and you can pretty easily shorten or speed it up by intentionally circumnavigating certain soft rules like how many cards you pull and whatnot. Plus there’s some really fantastic Easter eggs that I liked. So I understand where you’re coming from but I think I liked it quite a bit more than you did.
I kind of feel like you don't explain things fluidly I'll be real... lot's of "we'll get to that later" and it feels like a disjointed explanation of what's going on. I think even if it's a complicated game it might be your job to simplify it a bit in an explanation if you're making a holistic review and I also feel even simple games could sound complicated if you keep having to bounce between stuff. To me it just feels like a "roll dice and these mechanics make you roll dice more while giving you something to do with those dice". This doesn't JUST feel like a complicated game, but also a confusing review. Can't judge based off of this :/
This sort of reminds me of Pokemon Tabletop United, a pretty popular Pokemon TRPG where it seems like the goal was to _perfectly_ recreate every Pokemon game possible into a single TRPG ruleset. It's pretty accurate; almost anything you can find in a Pokemon game is somewhere in that book. The problem is it ends up being a really challenging game to play because there's so many things happening all at once all trying to perfectly recreate a video game into a tabletop game. I think this is doing something similar; every time I see a rule come up, I say "Oh, like the game!", like I can see every connection they made and I think that's really impressive. But I thiiiiink they may have went a little too hard in trying to make this a Sonic game board game. Like you gotta get through the levels, you gotta avoid badniks, oh you gotta go through the bonus stage and find the Chaos Emeralds! You gotta fight the boss and you gotta hit it multiple times, and yeah i _get it,_ I do feel like I'm playing Sonic, but it's also like every time I touch something it's gonna fall apart. It is _beautiful_ in its love for classic Sonic but perhaps a little meticulous in its detail. Immediately off the top of my head I'm noticing that every single slot for a die requires one specific number. I know different characters have abilities to modify their dice results, but uhhhhh usually when I see a dice placement game, there's a range of options as to what dice I can place where, like "3+" or "below 5". In this game it's more like "if you didn't roll a 4 you can fuck yourself right off, I hate you". I get that you're rolling a bunch of dice and you have multiple options of which way to go, but I mean, your very first roll was an almost total whiff (assuming you didn't have any abilities to use, I would have to go back and watch again now that I know how to play to find out), and that's never going to feel good to roll a fistful of dice, get no workable numbers, and say "okay. go ahead, next player".
I have this old game, I’d love to see if you can get a hold of it. It’s call “Key to the Kingdom” If I knew how to safely ship it to you I would. It was a favorite of mine as a kid
Pretty sure he has a PO box where you can send him stuff. He might even open it in an opening mail video. Look for his opening videos and see if you can find the address.
Saw that first from the Board James episode. They did a remake a few years ago, and that’s also a great little simple game, but I would love to see him review that original version.
Awww so sad. It had a pretty interesting premise. But tbh i think it would have been more fun as a racing game kinda like cubitos to draw in more people into the board game hobby.
That's a shame. As a lifelong Sonic fan who likes board games, I had some concerns when the game was revealed, and this seems to validate all of my concerns. The game looks too complicated for the average person and conveys too many gameplay elements to keep track of, compared to other board games I like. I wish I could like it more.
This seems like a game that was designed to be a digital experience adapted to a physical game with all the things to keep track of. Hell, the bones of a slay the spire rogue-like are all here. Co-Op board games are already a tough sell for a lot of people and this seems like its just a bit much. It's interesting that a game based on a game celebrated for it's simple mechanics has so much needless complexity.
This really seems like this game was made with the IP first and mechanics were tacked on to other mechanics tacked on to other mechanics. Also... points for a co-op game? Why are games still doing this? Bad sonic games will keep coming out, analog or digital does not matter.
I'm a Sonic guy but not really a craft board game person. I absolutely can't follow how you're supposed to play this game or why it would be entertaining, which is a shame.
Hearing you explain the mechanics feels like a skit about overcomplicated board game mechanics lol
I can't even follow how to play this, so it may as well be.
Tbf if you don't play board games, doesn't matter the branding, it ain't gonna be for you.
I always have a hard time following Prozd game descriptions lol
Ironically I'd like to see a digital version of this
Give Tabletop Simulator enough time, somebody will find a way.
@@c0mf0rta61ynum6 It's on TTS right now, but none of it is scripted. XD

Love the Green Hill Zone music in the bg.

There are plenty of easy alternatives. This game is for people who like complex board games
Congrats on making me learn a new vocabulary word. I've been alive for 25 years and never heard or seen that word before
I love this game! My coworker brought this for me from america. I've already played it a lot.
I would love to see a review of divorced dads court of chaos
Oh yeah, the Sonic TH-cam channel put out a video on this. It looked neat.
If I set this up in front of someone that doesn't play hobby board games, I think they'd immediately ask to do something else, lol. Not saying there can't be a complicated Sonic themed board game, but like... This is a lot.
Not really
I would’ve expected a Sonic themed game to have more marbles and ramps..
ooo yea that would be so fun
I think a sonic game about ROLLING dice is pretty fun
This looks pretty good for a sonic board game compared to other sonic board games I have seen. Ps I think you prozd would be a fun knuckles in like a cartoon or anime
I bet he could provide Knuckles a good voice.

Did they include "the carbuncle ate itself" in this sonic game?
THE BANANAS HAS GONE BAD
Good reference to a unrecognized sonic shuffle quote
I get your points, however I do want to give this game a go myself. Seems very nice.
Pretty unique gameplay. Refreshing to see
(I’m sure there are similar games, I’m just not familiar with any)
Feels like a less balanced version of the Mega Man board game. I love that game. This, however, feels jaaaanky.

Agreed, this game doesn't seem that complex tbh

That Sonic character looks neat. Is he Silver's cousin or something?
ooh, looking forward to hearing about this when I get home!
this is sick as hell
I would love to see you try the blessed dark very fun card game

Getting some real cow card game vibes from this…
I think I followed the rules for the fake joke game a lot better than this
I saw this on the shelves and thought it looked like a terrible idea.
Seems like Sonic Racers is still the best Sonic board game then.
GOTTA GO FAST.
Awww so sad. It had a pretty interesting premise. But tbh i think it would have been more fun as a racing game kinda like cubitos to draw in more people into the board game hobby.
oh wow!

You must think the average person is really dumb. Or maybe it’s projection.
I have it and it’s really fun, it’s not as complicated as you might think.
Please review the game “Divorced Dads”!
Very Nice ❤️🖤
Have you seen the new Divorced Dads TCG? I'd love to see a review of that.
So its basically Elder Sign with furry theme
I don't really care about board game, but you're cool so I'm leaving a like
review tin spin!!
Completely agree with this review - it's very thematic, but overly fiddly and complex. However, I still rate it a 7.5/10.
that seems like kind of a weird thing to say and then do lol.

It sounds like this game is too complicated for its own good. A shame. A Sonic board game would usually be up my alley. Thanks for the review!
