    That neck pickup sounds stellar for the price. The bridge pickup.....nice brown sound. Beautiful color. Sounds like a winner for a first guitar purchase or gift pack.

    I took the shallow plunge and dropped $170. I'm actually quite impressed. Agreed on the single coils. Now there's a guitar that I can just lay around anywhere without worry.

      I don't worry about my main guitar. It's so incredibly beat up and modified that a dent doesn't matter at all. But I would be heartbroken if I would lose it.

      @@BigHairyGuitars Reliced by use is the best kind. I have a maple strat that has gorgeous wood on body and neck and to be honest, a dent there hurts more than on another guitar where a dent doesn't even count anymore.

    I was in a shop a little while ago and picked up a $170 Squire Telecaster - and was quite impressed with how well it played. Entry level guitars are definitely a lot better today than the Hondo copy Flying V that was my first electric from the local mall back in the mid 80's.

    Stellar intro as always. I picked up my first floating trem guitar in 20 years this winter, a Squier Contemporary Strat on clearance. I paid $279 for it. Roasted maple neck, trem is workable and it plays like a $1000 guitar. Downside is the pots and pickups are a not quite there for me. Either way, what you can get for sub $300US today is bonkers compared to back in the day. Cheers.

    I played when I was young late 60s and now I am old and picking it back up. So I couldn't justify under 500 or above so I went for the DST-152R. I would have killed for this quitar in the late 60s. I did a little work adjusting string and pickup height. Since I purchased this on sale for 170, I bought vintage locking tuners and roller string trees, so I am back up to 200. Like I said, I would have died and went to heaven for this. I have played Fenders. My older brother had a Fender Jazzmaster back in those days. This Donner is a heck of a buy. Fret work needed no work, strings actually very low. Intonation was off, needed adjusting. Wrapped the vibrato threads with thread tape to stiffen and hold from dropping, works well.

    That is pretty solid. The Humbucker is not that great, but that could be a great guitar to switch out parts you have already lying around. I have a humbucker in a drawer that I could use there. And then give it to a kid in the neighbourhood.

    I had a semi-hollow Tele from Donner, it was absolutely fantastic for the price. Would have happily paid 3x more. I get that these cheaper guitars can be a bit of a lottery, but it seems like when Donners are on, they are ON.

  • @JeffreyParsons
    @JeffreyParsons ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s truly amazing what you can get at that price point these days. My first guitar was a Kramer Focus in 1986 that basically wouldn’t stay in tune for more than one song, and I think that cost more that this thing in 1986! Also I mostly spent the whole video looking at your Mac desktop. Please clean that up. 😂

    • @johnlux6905
      @johnlux6905 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean the desktop isn't like the junk drawer in the kitchen: tape, random screws, batteries (some dead, some charged , mixed together), toothpicks, pushpins, some mystery wallwarts, etc. I guess I never got the memo either! Thanks for the heads up. 🙂

  • @wizrom3046
    @wizrom3046 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    These "cheap" guitars are made in the same factories with the same highly accurate CNC machines as many "good" guitars. Made with the same processes, same machines.
    The wood routing and fret slot cutting etc is all very accurate so they all play really good intonation etc.
    Mostly what you pay for with a "good" guitar is more expensive parts like pickup, tuners, bridge and more craftsman time setting it up.
    So generally if you get one of these and put some pickups in it and take some time to set it up you can get a serious guitar for a couple hundred bucks (plus pickups).
