LPT for the screen - Put the iPad in Guided Assistance, restricting the iPad to only HK. Plug iPad into smart plug to cycle charging on/off. Turn auto lock on iPad to desired time to put screen to sleep. Next place motion sensor around mounted iPad area. Preferably Hue or Aqara, they’re snappy, very responsive. Then set iPad to receive notifications when motion detected. When sensor is triggered it instantly wakes iPad screen to what the Guided assistance is restricted to. Lastly since iPad is in guided assistance, the motion notification will not be visibly. That’s it, very simple. Takes care of screen concerns and battery swelling. Plus it’s a sweet automation. Edit - guided access will obviously prevent you from quickly accessing other apps....
I was actually going to suggest Shortcuts-> Automation -> Create New. For a couple of things. One is to set a time of day, either by the sunrise/set (at that time or before or after). For screen brightness adjustment that is done automatically. Then an other for when battery charge level drops below a certain level. Could either have it send a text message to you. Or turn on an Home Kit device. Add an other to turn off that same device when it reaches a certain level.
@@RS-vy9qv I’ve actually have a charger set up for when battery level drops below 35%, it’ll turn on. Granted I’m not home yet but by the time I do, it’s at 20 or so. Then when the battery reaches 90% the charger turns off. Been doing this daily on my iPhone 12 pro max for a year. And battery health is still at 100%.
This works well as a replacement to an old alarm system pad. I placed our old iPad Air 2 where our alarm panel was by buying a 12v to 5v USB adapter allowing me to charge the iPad with the old alarm panel wiring.
This is cool. My brother had this in his house in 2004, he could control all home functions, TV, Audio, Security from each, and any room of the house. The screen on the wall was the size of an ipad, no shit, and was HD clear. Tons of functions, and features, too fun not to buy. You will not, regret this purchase. I've seen it in action .
Crazy Glue a couple of super magnets to the back of the Ipad, mated to a couple of magnetic countersunk washers, screwed to the wall. You can then move the iPad from place to place, including metal doors, refrigerators or service panels. I do this with flashlights, cell phones and remote controlls throughout the house. A flashlight kept permanetly on the fusebox service panel might be a smart idea. They sell these coin sized neodymium magnets on ebay, Amazon and Alibaba. I love them.
I bought this mount because of you a year ago. I was excited because they were located 10 minutes from me and I could pick it up in person. 1. I’m mad it went down in price 😂😂 2. Do you experience bad audio quality when using the microphone and speaker for security cameras or face time calls because the iPad is enclosed? When I use the iPad to talk to someone at my front door they say it’s hard to hear me.
Hey Sabrina, 10 minutes away, wow what are the odds?! I haven't really been using it much for communication through FaceTime or cameras. But yea, I would imagine the audio wouldn't be too great since I believe the microphone and speaker is blocked.
I have an old iPad 2. Pretty much gave up all hope of it when I was thinking HomeKit control was not an option for my old iPad. Last night I tried to add some of these third-party apps you mentioned and wallflower worked on my iPad 2. The home+ app did not install on my iPad. So instead of throwing my iPad 2 in the recycling bin I figured I might look into wall mounting it. Your video also made me think I do want a wall-mounted iPad for the visual aspect of HomeKit. I would want to upgrade to the paid version of wallflower ($64.99) and I would have to buy a wall mount for my iPad 2 ($5 if I use 3m Velcro-$30 for a cheap aesthetically pleasing wall mount) so for $97 or less I’m thinking about going for it vs buying an iPad Air 2. I am OK with the free version of wallflower but I’m considering getting the one time paid wallflower app but I would like to know what your thoughts are if it was any good. And by the way I’m OK with not being able to add devices or a Audomations/scenes Or even check security camera footage. If I do wall mount my iPad 2 I would definitely do so in a way where I can very easily upgrade to a newer version iPad.
Regarding the wallflower app, I think it's subjective. Personally, I do love the way it looks. I really tried to like it for that reason. But it just wasn't that practical when it came to actually controlling homekit devices on a daily basis. But, again, that's just me. You may use homekit differently or prefer the aesthetics over the other stuff. And it's been quite a while since I tried it so I'm not sure if there have been any major updates or changes since.
I have my unused iPhoneSE jailbroken and use activator to set it to charge when it's low on battery, and stop charging when it's 100%. I kind of "wall mount" my iPhoneSE (not iPad, only have 1 and i'm currently using it) and it acts like my "control center", especially when WatchOS7 messes up with shortcuts. so I can ask my watch to send message to jailbroken iPhoneSE, and it will execute what I ask.
Instead of AirPlaying directly to the HomePod from your iPad, I would suggesting scrolling down the list of available playback options and select the HomePod, then chick and chose your songs. This way the up next queue can be modified by more device than just the iPad.
Wall light switches has been the great upgrade I have done on my house I have put them as timers on the bathroom fans and that is one my wife has very much enjoyed. 😁
This video was really helpful. If I will have a have an old iPad I would know what to do with it now. I am glad I decided to use my AppleTV as my main hub although I just started building my kids so things will change over time
Thanks Ramon. For outdoor, personally I'm using Circle View and Eufy Cam 2 Pros. For indoors, I like the Eve Cam and Aqara cameras. Indoor Eufy Cameras are a good affordable option too.
Great video! I can see how most people would be inclined to use a HomePod rather than a wall-mounted iPad - just more convenient than getting up to stand in front of a wall to use it. However, it does look really amazing up there. And a big thumbs-up for the Home+ app!
Wouldn't it be nice if HomeKit had a visitor's setting or app that you could give limited access to the house and their room to control certain smart accessories?
@@al3xtran no as in where they can control certain smart appliances, like only the lights, or only accessories in a certain room. Guided Access is where the user is locked to a certain app
It would be great if they had a visitor’s feature. I don’t want guests controlling MY bedroom or even seeing the status of my devices. I also don’t want them having access to disarming the security system. Apple probably feels we would be delving into the rabbit hole of delegating rights which ruins all their “elegant” “simplicity” but this visitor feature is very important if this is to gain serious adoption. You can just quickly assign a visitor profile to guests for their own iPhones and the wall-mounted iPad. Guests don’t need access to disarm your alarm after they break in.
I'd probably look into if you can have a screensaver run every so often as even if you don't care about it dying quickly you'll still have the possibility of screen burn in with the static icons in the same places all the time (think like the ATMs you see with shadows on the screen all the time)
It’s a great idea! I also use my ipad on the wall but with aqara’s moving sensor mounted in the ceiling. Every time I walk by the display goes on and after a minute it goes off. Unfortunately you can set this up only with the guided access under the accessibility settings. My iPad isn’t charging all the time. I was trying to set up an shortcut that detects when the battery is at 20% to charge the ipad with an smart plug and when it’s at 80% to stop charging it. But i theem to dumb or its just not possible. Could you try it out?
Marc Solomon Scheimann you need to go to settings-> accessibility > guided access > set display lock to your preference (for example 1 minute). Then its ready. Now when you go in to the home app. Click on the left upper corner the house icon > choose the motion sensor under notifications and its done. Now you go to the home app screen or your preferred home app and with 3 clicks on the home button you can activate the guided access. After the 1 minute the screen goes off. Now when a move is detected by the motion sensor the ipad get a notification and your screen goes on. (The notification is not displayed). I hope you can do it. I’ll post the link of a German video, i hope this helps
Hi! I was in the custom installation industry years ago. I just started my HomeKit last week. TV 4K HDR, 2 Minis, Nano A19 Bulbs. I really like your idea to use iPod Touch for room controls! Reminds me of Control 4, Niles, etc. Let me know if you want to discuss this idea in general. Really a good idea! Shane…great videos btw! Subscribed and Bell’ed, lol
I’m putting up a new iPad now. I’ve got the Vitabox installed and awaiting the iPad’s arrival on Christmas Eve of all days. The suggestion to have a new family member account is brilliant and I’ve been using the Home+ 5 app for a few weeks. Do you have a preferred music app? Also, on the main springboard on the app, do you keep all of your apps you use for this on one page and then move all other apps off screen now (handy new feature is iOS 15)?
Sounds great. For a while now (since making this video) I've just been using the Home app in guided access mode. This requires a password to exit the app. When doing this, it doesn't really matter what other apps and such are on the iPad Home Screen. And you probably don't even need to use a separate Apple ID when using guided access mode. There are some pros and cons to this method, but this has worked well for me. I just use the Apple Music app for music but rarely use it on the iPad, because again, it's locked into the Home app with guided access mode.
It would be nice if the Home+ 4 app has a trial version. I don’t think we should pay for the full price if we weren’t satisfied with it. I do have a question for Shane. I have some devices that are not compatible with the Apple Home app. Will the Home+ 4 app detect them? An example would be the Ring devices. By the way, great video.
Thanks Alvin. First, I have gotten a refund for an app in the past that I was not satisfied with...so that is possible, although maybe not guaranteed. And to answer your question...no. The Home+4 app is strictly a HomeKit app. So if you have accessories that do not support HomeKit, this won't help. It DOES however expose certain attributes of those homekit accessories, as well as capabilities, that may not be accessible in Apple's Home app.
Do you have your security system linked in HomeKit? I thought about doing this but if someone breaks into the house they can disarm the alarm from HomeKit without needing a pin.
Or use Touch ID or Face ID if the iPad supports those. Each of 5 people can have at least one fingerprint each, and I think at least two likenesses can be used for Face ID.

It looks nice but I think a stand is much more practical. Can have it on my office at home or move it around when watching movies or preparing for sleep.
So, if you were to sell your house could you easily convert the wall mounted iPad to a different user ID? Or would you need to set up all the accessories again for a new user/owner? That is an issue I am wrestling with since most of my devices are hard wired and will transfer with a sale.
If I were to sell my home, I'd probably take the iPad and patch up the wall. For devices that cannot be taken, I'd probably factory reset them and let the new owner reconfigure them.
Hey Shane, Great video as usual. I was wondering if I were to get a used iPad to do this, how old of one could I get to save the most money and have the same functionality?
Thanks Shaun. I’m still using an iPad Air 2. iPad OS 14 will still support iPad Air 2 but I think that’s the oldest. I would look up the requirements for the newest iPadOS to check compatibility. Just know that older ones may gradually loose support each year when new updates are released.
Apple says that it isn't harmful to keep the device plugged in all the time. iPads and iPhones have smart charging capabilities that keep it from damaging the device.
I bit the bullet on this and bought a used iPad on eBay. It is an iPod 5 that I got for $85 because its edges were all cracked up, but the screen was ok. The edges get hid by the mount so not a big deal at all. So far I like it being there. It's nice having it there IMO. Its quick access to see what is on in your home and allows all to quickly control. I ran electric up from a switch below and installed a recessed box with a Qualcomm USB in it. I found a right angle lightening cable that fit in perfect. It is in our kitchen, which is a main thoroughfare for our house. So far I was using just the Home app, but I downloaded the Home+ 4 app, just need to get it set up. thanks for the idea Shane. Also, side note (question): Have you had problems with HOOBS staying connected? Seems like I am always having dropping issues with it and have to go on the server and restart the service. I have 4 AppleTVs and 3 HomePods, and now this iPad to work as hubs. You mentioned in a previous video about shutting down the AppleTV hubs, which I did, but still seeing some issues with buttons not working, etc.
That's awesome! No I have not experienced any issues with Hoobs staying connected. Are you having issues with all/only your hoobs accessories? Hoobs has pretty good customer service...maybe they can help find the problem. Could be an issue with a certain plugin, etc.
I was thinking about doing this with an iPad Pro or the new air so it’s got thinner bezels and no home button. But I guess the fingerprint scanner is a useful security feature
Hi Shane, seen something called sink lights? What’s that, would you think of doing a tour of your current devices. Looking a little inspiration. Thanks
Hey David, that is just my ceiling can light over my kitchen sink. I will definitely do a full tour video one day. There are a couple of home projects I’d like to finish before I do that video but it’ll happen eventually for sure.
Shane Whatley Hi Shane, have the same iPad Air 2 not serving anymore. But for the moment, I don‘t have so much Homekit devices that it would make sense to do a wall mounting, but if we could have a tour of all your devices connected via Homekit, that would perhaps be a gamechanger for me. So hope this video comes soon 🙏. Until then keep up with your videos and if I may give you an advice: please give us a smile sometimes, you always look so sad or demotivated 😔. Come on Shane 🥳😉
I like the Ecobee thermostats for my setup. Currently for outdoors, I like the Circle View camera, if you have access to power (not wireless). If you need wireless, I like the Eufy Cams. Each have pros and cons.
Shane, I may be buying an apartment in the Caribbean in a few months, the apartments are built on concrete, so wondering about installing an iPad Air 4th Gen, thoughts? I see this VidaBox vendor has some PoE chargers and not sure if you need to buy any of that but just the wall mount, assuming the iPad will be used WIFI and that there's going to be a 110v power connection behind the wall. Just need a bit of clarification on what items are needed. Thanks.
If you have a place to easily plug in the iPad charger, you shouldn't need anything other than the mount. If you have ethernet drops/access throughout the house, you can use the PoE adapter as an alternative if you wish.
Hey great info you have provided. I have done the same thing however I have an issue with the home app not updating. If the app is open and someone uses their phone or a wall switch to turn a light on it won’t update. Do you find that home + fixes that issue?
Thanks Scott. That’s interesting, I don’t have that issue. When someone controls a light with their phone, it updates fine in the Home app on the ipad.
@@ShaneCreates it’s not all the time. I have created an automation to open the app in the morning and for some reason it always does it then I will have to close it and reopen it for it to start responding. Also if it is open for extended periods of time it will stop updating and then I end up with the same result and will have to reload it. From what I have read it started happening to people after iOS 13. I have tried Home+5 before the only downside I remember is it can’t support TV’s.
@@scottrupil I have since created an automation that will turn on the iPad when someone approached. I'm using a motion sensor and guided access to accomplish this. Maybe something like that would help. Here's a short video on doing that: th-cam.com/video/X9yr0s1kOX8/w-d-xo.html
Shane, this looks great. One question: are you not worried about an ability of someone to yell unlock the door from then outside? HomePod ignores those, but an unlocked iPad will not. How do you deal with this?
I think the point of having a smarthome is where you can just control everything by just sitting from your comfortable couch with smartphone which most of the time is in your hand, or just by speaking...
Great Video, I wanted to know in the home app when you have the screen with all your cameras if it's possible to turn the sound of all camera except one? Thanks
Apple does so much. People always say that people always are buying new stuff every year but the truth is that they make the older devices still have use.
Hi Shane Do you know if theres a quick guide or cheatsheet on what apps or hubs to use to get all smart devices working on Homekit. I have just all the main vendors Arlo - ring - nest - Kuna - 3 different termastats etc. Is there one good hub and app that will connect to these and then route to homekit?
Hi, I like the idea of leaving the iPad on 24/7. But just wondering, do you know how much power it uses? or how much it cost to leave it on constantly?
Thanks Joshua! You begin running into issues when using older versions of iOS with HomeKit. If possible, I'd try to use devices that can be updated to the latest software.
Hi Shane. I am building my first house and smart house is what I am heading to. Thanks for videos that you have made. They are so clarify and perfect for newbies like me. Question: The list of devices in the description is all equipment you are using in your house? Thanks
Thanks Khanh! The list is mostly what I use, although there have been some updates since this. I do have a recommended products page on my website. shanewhatley.com/products/ I will be updating this soon as well to include more stuff, easier updating, and a better layout in order to see and find everything easier (so stay tuned for that).
It’s crazy that I stumbled on this video bc I literally had this idea the other night. When u setup the neutral Apple ID as a child’s account, just curious what u decided to use as the name. I know u may not want to share that on here, I’m just looking for ideas, as I explained in another comment on a different video, I’m in the early stages in getting mine setup. I already have a family email created and ready that can be used as the Apple ID for the mounted iPad. Just trying to figure out how to incorporate it into my family sharing.
There are some methods to make this work, yes. The native home app might time out if it remains open. I haven't really tested that much. Other apps can do it. Check out this week's video (coming Sunday) that I'll actually be sharing some new stuff regarding the wall mounted iPad.
Hey Shane, this info was on point. Thanks! How can I use another Apple ID for my iPad as a hub? I tried making another under my family plan and changed iPad, AppleTV and HomePod to the same, but not working well. Let me know and thanks again.
Thanks! I’m using the separate Apple ID for my wall mounted iPad only. My Apple TV, HomePod, and everything else is connected to my main Apple ID. Then you can just share/invite your homekit home with that ipad. The main reason I did this was just to keep personal stuff like messages, emails, etc off the wall mounted iPad. Another solution that works pretty well is to use the guided access feature and just lock the iPad into the home app, or whatever homekit app you prefer.
My home is a mixture of Windows, Apple, and Android, will the Home+ app be able to utilize the different OS's, or is there a home app that will support them all?
Hey Shane, thanks for this video. I have the same setup for few months now, with the unique Apple ID for the Ipad. The only problem that I’m trying to solve is that I have noticed that the system is consider this Ipad as the location of this Apple ID and since the Ipad is always at home part of location based automations are not working. Have you figured out this issue? Thanks!
For my location based automations I just specify which people to include. For example, when the last person leaves (choose my wife or me), run the automation.
@@ShaneCreates thanks for your quick answer. I managed to do this in automations that are triggered by person’s location, but if The trigger is else and person’s location is just a rule the is no way to choose the ones. Also, I have a door sensor at my front door and I want to get notification when the door is opened when there is no one at home (to know dog walker time…) never got this notification since I have the Ipad on unique Apple ID.
Sorry, only part of my message was sent. I watched your original video when you installed your iPad on the wall. I chose not to do this for the same reasons you now mention in your latest clip. I would like to give you a tip.......when you need to install something (not pictures) on drywall please don’t use any type of drill bit. Please consider using an awl to make the hole for a plug. . There will be less mess and the hole will be firm and will lead to more strength. Drill bits tend to break away the drywall on entry and within the hole. I hope this is understood and that it helps. Also, do you have any plans to review a “Level Lock”?
Thanks for the tip Doug! I currently don't have plans to review the Level Lock, however if I got my hands on one, I would certainly consider a review seeing as how it works with HomeKit.
I have had the same as you I rebuilt my house after hurricane sandy so I was able to run cat 5 and speaker cables all over the house so I took my old iPad Air 1 and put the cameras the lights sonos all on the iPad but I’m the only one who ever uses it but I help trying so thanks I will try home pulse 4 it looks great maybe it will get my family to use it thanks for the great vids
Hi Shane, when you assign a dedicated appleID to the ipad do you invite that appleid from the home app of your iPhone? In this case the configuration on the iPhone is the 'master' version. I use also homebridge so I wondering how this ties together
Yes, that's basically what I do. I use family sharing already for my family, so I just added the wall-mounted iPad's Apple ID as a family member, which you can then give access to your home. You could also always use guided access, which locks the iPad into one app and requires a password. Just another option.
Hey Shane, just wanted to ask you. I have started to follow your methods of automation, accessories and app’s but for some reason, my Home+4 app interface doesn’t looks like your!
Hi Shane, I just did an iPad wall mount myself and just discovered that if someone breaks into my house he could just disarm the alarm via Homekit, any idea how to solve this? ask for a passcode just for the security system or something?
That's a tough one. You can remove the "security system" from favorites and the status in homekit which should help. You can also use 3rd party apps maybe and choose which accessories are shown and which are hidden (of course, hiding the security system).
It shouldn't since I'm not running the cable inside the wall, but I'm no contractor. The also sell power over ethernet adapters for these mounts if you do need to run wires.
I don't have one to review. They recently gained "homeKit support" but really it just means that the light switches it connects to are exposed to homekit. You cannot access your homekit accessories on the panel unfortunately. Check out this video by Eric from ModernDayTech: th-cam.com/video/e5cIrcWkbhQ/w-d-xo.html
Would I be able to have my ring video doorbell that I am using to open and close my gate work on this ipad? Right now when someone comes to the gate it sends a notification to my phone... would I be able to open the gate from the wall mounted ipad? I was looking at using a system called Brilliant for the gate opening.... thoughts? Also will the homecam app work for my ring camera’s?
This type of setup is mainly for a homekit smart home setup. Ring products do not natively support homekit. You might want to look at the echo show or google nest hub...something like that would probably support your ring doorbell and may give you what you are looking for. I do believe the Brilliant control panels also support ring.
Indeed you are correct. That is actually something I've begun doing since this video was made. It works great as long as you only intend to use one app on the iPad all the time.
What is the oldest model of iPad you can use with these home automation apps? I would hate to invest in a new pad if Apple doesn't support older iOS when I have 2 old models.
I’m still using an old iPad Air 2. That might be the oldest, not sure. Just look at the latest iPadOS specs in the Apple website and see which devices it supports. As long as you can run the latest software, you should be good.
That's why I set up a separate Apple ID specifically for this iPad. It won't get any of my messages or emails, etc. You can also put the iPad into Guided Access mode which locks it into a single app and requires a passcode to exit.
Yea that’s true. I didn’t use guided access until recently. Recently I started using that with a motion detector to turn the screen on and off, so it’s not on all the time. It works well.
Awesome video, I just recently added an iPad to the wall for this purpose and I’m loving it. Weird question, trying to add a button/switch type action to enable and disable an automation for a camera that triggers an alarm on my HomePod when occupancy is detected. Any ideas??
Thanks Chris! Seems like something you can do with conditional automations. Something like if motion is detected, when the switch is ON, sound HomePod alarm. Check out this video, it may give you some ideas: th-cam.com/video/wNRvWU073SY/w-d-xo.html
PERFECT! This helped out a lot...using the Home+ app in the background I was able to use add a condition right within the automation itself. This allowed me to create 2 scenes, 1) to alarm the system before bed, which basically starts the occupancy sensor on the camera. 2) to turn the scene off...I guess my goal is to have a manual button on the ipad on the wall that makes it easy to just turn it off or use Siri through HomePod.
Chris Kirby that’s basically what we did in that video. Used a smart plug as the condition. So turning the switch on or off in HomeKit would arm or disarm the alarm.
When I saw your first review on the iPad wall I thought I'd buy one, but I'm all the time using HomePod or iPhone / iPad / Mac to control my home device so I pretty much gave it up but still, it looks amazing 😁 thanks for your thoughts 👍
Thanks! That’s why I wanted to share my every day experience with it. I don’t think I’d recommend buying a new iPad just for this because it doesn’t get used a ton, but it’s great to repurpose an old one or maybe buying a cheap used one to mount.
Did you setup this to work with secure video and home/away states? So far HomeKit is treating my secondary iPad under a “child” account as a person that is always home. So my secure video camera never turns on as HomeKit thinks someone is home(I have the camera turn off when I am home). I’m trying out the “use this iPad as a home hub” in my next testing to prevent this from happening. It’s frustrating that I can’t choose who to have a home/away state for the cameras but can for automation. Ive talked with Apple on the phone and they didn’t help. Stated that even iPads are treated for home/away states and camera only switch with one person that fits the condition. They said even if you turn off share location on the iPad it doesn’t change it for HomeKit.
Try turning off its location services. I use geofencing on my iPhone for my thermostat, but I was also logged in on my iPad and it kept assuming I’m home, so I turned off location services for that app and that fixed the problem.
after just getting into homekit and now trying to update my cameras to be compatible with homekit like the eufy indoor 2k camera (and i'm sure its the same with the eve cam and circle?), i realize that i am sacrificing a lot. once i got eufy into homekit, i lost the ability to detect motion based on people and pets. also motion zones. i assume in homekit secure video, at least zones are available (and maybe people detection?) but that means i have to subscribe and pay for icloud storage, which was the whole point of me getting the eufy cam in the first place because there is no storage fees. if i remove my eufy from homekit, now that removes my ability to get and use the homecam app. or even the ability to look at ALL my cameras in homekit. is there another way? to get cameras into homekit, but use the manufacturers app to record and notify of motion? seems homekit just disables everything thats great about the features in the eufy app.
So with HomeKit Secure Video (HSV), you have the ability to record motion based from either animals, vehicles, or people. Motion zones are not available yet, but will be in iOS14 along with face detection. For many HomeKit cameras, you can connect them to homekit, without using HSV, allowing you to stream only within the home app. It will not record unless you enable HomeKit Secure Video and have one of the required iCloud storage plans. I have not used Eufy cameras yet, so I cannot say for sure what you can or can't do with those specifically.
@@ShaneCreates oh ok. thanks for the response. i hope you can try the eufy cam eventually since they are "homekit" compatible. but once i add them to homekit, it disables a lot of features on the eufy app side. is HSV available now with iOS13 or is that a iOS14 thing? because the only option i have is to record all motion, not specific to people. thanks
Nice job! Top-notch video Shane! It would be really cool if Apple had a setting to turn on and off the screen with a motion.(Actually, I bet you can figure out how to do it with shortcuts and automations)
Thanks Eric! And I think you’re right...I bet we can figure it out. 😏 There have been some great tips and suggestions in the comments here from people much smarter than me to do stuff like that. I’ll probably play around some and see if I can make it happen. Thanks for watching bro!
Hi Shane, I plane to place some wall mounted iPad (at least in the living room and the master bedroom). Before that, I’m playing with an old iPad Mini 2 (don’t have much app working well on it...) and I control my music over Apple Music app or the Sonos app. Also I have access to Home for some scenarios. Since this iPad is dedicated for the house, I’ve created a specific iCloud account for it (I’ve got that idea from one of your other video). That’s cool since my girls won’t be able to delete through this iPad what I’ve done in HomeKit. But, because there is a big BUT, all the automation based on first person arriving or last person leaving doesn’t work anymore since one member of the family (the house account) stays at home ! Damned, what can I do ??? Do you have the same problem ??? Again, thank you so much for reading me... and until next time, I see you next Sunday 🤩. Your French fan.
Thanks Julien! When setting up a location based automation, one thing you can do is select WHICH people of the home are used for the automations. For example, you can choose the first person to arrive home, and then choose yourself and your spouse as the only ones it uses.
@@ShaneCreates Hi Shane, Works great for my scenarios but unfortunately the camera don’t work the same way. I can’t choose individually people for notification activity... 😭 Before, I used to have « your camera is on away mode » when my wife and I left the house (not sure about my translation of HomeKit message) and now I can’t. Sorry to bother you again about that. Have a great day and take care of your family.
@@julienvallette8071 I’m having the same issue for secure video. I have a camera that turns off when I get home, but it’s now always off because it thinks my iPad is a person that is home. I’m going to test to see if setting up the iPad as a hub will prevent this. It got me thinking that my iPad Pro that is on my account never determines my home/away state, just my iPhone and I have setup my iPad Pro as a hub.
@@jaymacibe3731 Hi 👋 Guess I’m not the only one with this problem 😉. Interesting about your feedback concerning turning your iPad into a hub. If it work, it would be great but, unfortunately for me, I think my iPad mini 2 is to old to become a hub. Though, I would have a raison to get a new one for the house 😅😂.
Very cool and some great ideas! Thanks for sharing!
Damnn...ur soo good😂💯💯💯
What is LPT?
@@RS-vy9qv I’ve actually have a charger set up for when battery level drops below 35%, it’ll turn on. Granted I’m not home yet but by the time I do, it’s at 20 or so. Then when the battery reaches 90% the charger turns off.
Been doing this daily on my iPhone 12 pro max for a year. And battery health is still at 100%.
The secondary account is a smart idea.
Is the secondary account the main account that does all the setup or a "child" account?
This works well as a replacement to an old alarm system pad. I placed our old iPad Air 2 where our alarm panel was by buying a 12v to 5v USB adapter allowing me to charge the iPad with the old alarm panel wiring.
wow that's awesome! Nice tip!
Finally convinced me I need a iPad mounted to the wall!
Mission accomplished! 😁
1. I’m mad it went down in price 😂😂
I have my iPad on a smart plug so it charges at a certain time every day for an hour then shuts off.
That's a great idea. I may implement that as well. Thanks!
Bobby Rowlett that’s awesome thanks for the idea
I have my unused iPhoneSE jailbroken and use activator to set it to charge when it's low on battery, and stop charging when it's 100%.
I kind of "wall mount" my iPhoneSE (not iPad, only have 1 and i'm currently using it) and it acts like my "control center", especially when WatchOS7 messes up with shortcuts. so I can ask my watch to send message to jailbroken iPhoneSE, and it will execute what I ask.
Much better automation is in shortcuts, create one that turns on the smart plug when the ipad gets below 5% battery and end if it reached 100%
Which plug do you have?
Instead of AirPlaying directly to the HomePod from your iPad, I would suggesting scrolling down the list of available playback options and select the HomePod, then chick and chose your songs. This way the up next queue can be modified by more device than just the iPad.
Thanks Alex, great suggestion!
Just letting you tube algorithm know I Love all your vids. 👍
Thanks so much for the support!! 😃
Wall light switches has been the great upgrade I have done on my house I have put them as timers on the bathroom fans and that is one my wife has very much enjoyed. 😁
Very nice! Which switches do you use for your bathroom fans? Lurton?
Amazing set up I’m not gonna lie I’m a little jealous of your smart home
Haha thanks! It all just happens little by little over time.
This video was really helpful.
If I will have a have an old iPad I would know what to do with it now.
I am glad I decided to use my AppleTV as my main hub although I just started building my kids so things will change over time
Thanks for watching! Glad it was helpful.
I always watch you. I’m switching my Alexa to apple home. Any recommendations for outdoor and indoor cameras. Thanks
Thanks for watching!!
Wouldn't it be nice if HomeKit had a visitor's setting or app that you could give limited access to the house and their room to control certain smart accessories?
Yes that would be great!
isn’t that guided access
Really cool idea with the motion sensor!
Great ideas Jonny, thanks for sharing! I will look into that!
Hey - how do you configure the display to turn on as you walk past?
Marc Solomon Scheimann th-cam.com/video/O8jB7-gIiAM/w-d-xo.html
i reccomend you can use guided access
Great tips! I’ve long wanted to add an iPod touch to each room for control.
Thanks! That would be cool!
I just use the Apple Music app for music but rarely use it on the iPad, because again, it's locked into the Home app with guided access mode.
great video!! thanks for the help. I do have one question do you have any Insteon devices if so did they work well with Hoobs?
Thanks George. Sorry, I do not have any Insteon devices.
i chose to mount it next to my bed, best thing i ever did.
Oh that’s cool. Never would have thought of that!
Set up a passcode for the iPad.

Yes I agree, that would be much more practical for watching content. This setup is intended strictly for controlling the smart home.
6:30 it reduces the battery life of the ipad but if you have it always plugged in that doesn't really matter
Hi, one question - how to set up Home app as a starting one? I mean this app should be on screen everytime when i am in front of it. Thanks.
Good explanation, I’m planning on to do this on my house, question is does your app works with Alexa, I have my entire smart home working with it.
Thanks for watching. No this is all done for a homekit setup. So the apps used are for controlling HomeKit accessories.
Wondering if you have ever used the brilliant tech smart home panel? Can it be a another option like this iPad?
I haven't. It wouldn't work quite the same because it cannot access/show all of your homekit accessories like I've done here.
How’s the battery health? Has it changed? It’s always charged but isn’t that bad for the battery? I’m just wondering
Apple says that it isn't harmful to keep the device plugged in all the time. iPads and iPhones have smart charging capabilities that keep it from damaging the device.
What percent is it set to start and stop charging at?
I never use the fingerprint scanner personally. I like to keep mine unlocked so it's easy to use when you walk up to it.
Jean-Paul Pinnel haha ok thanks for the feedback!!
What’s the best thermostat & outdoor cameras to use in HomeKit?
@@ShaneCreates Thanks Shane
Soo...The ipad now is the HomeKit Hub? Or maybe it should be..what do you think?
No I don’t like using iPads as my HomeKit hub, unless it’s your only option. I recommend using HomePods and/or Apple TV’s if it’s possible.
If you want to use the camera feature that you talked about do you have to have certain cameras? Do they work with ring? Thanks
I have a very great question, can you be able to take the mount off the wall and put it anywhere you want it to be?
This mount is screwed into the wall.
No I'm not worried about that. Just turn off "hey Siri" on the iPad if that is something you are worried about.
Doh! I could’ve thought of that myself. :) Thanks.
Nice video and the length is perfect
TheAdminFromHell thank you!
Thanks
I don't think you get sound when viewing all the cameras like that. You have to tap into one to get sound.
@@ShaneCreates alright thanks
Nice set up. I had no idea Apple products could do all this
Apple does so much.
It's about 6watts
Great video as always! Would you know if there is a HomeKit Controller that can be used on the old iPad (9.3.5)?
Thanks Joshua! You begin running into issues when using older versions of iOS with HomeKit. If possible, I'd try to use devices that can be updated to the latest software.

Hallo shane. My camera goes out on my ipad 4. Efter 1 hour. Can you tell me why is doing that? Thanks
You can use whatever name you want. Shouldn’t really matter regarding family sharing.
What homekit security system do you use? If you mount the iPad and it’s always on, everyone can disarm the system including thieves?
If using a HomeKit security system, just don’t make it a “favorite” and it won’t show up on the main screen.
Shane, thanks again for another great video. By the way, have the “Homewall app” come out yet? Thanks.
Thanks Aaron! No, last I checked it was still in early stages of development.
@@ShaneCreates Thanks.
Can doorbell camera be added to be viewed on camera feed all the time?
There are some methods to make this work, yes. The native home app might time out if it remains open. I haven't really tested that much. Other apps can do it. Check out this week's video (coming Sunday) that I'll actually be sharing some new stuff regarding the wall mounted iPad.
Watching you use the iPad makes me think that you’re trying to find something to do with it rather than actually needing to use it lol
Have you tried to incorporate a amazon echo into your Apple set up? I just purchased 5 echos for the cost of one home pod.
insight-imaging.ca No, I used to have a couple of echo dots but retired those a while back. It’s all HomeKit now.
Shane, did you drop the ethernet cable in your home? Or did you have someone do it?
No Ethernet cables unfortunately.
Darrell Grays I don’t think so. I think HomeKit apps will only work on Apple devices.
Nice to have but i never use a app cuz of the voice assistent so i will never touch a wall ipad if i have smart switches

@@ShaneCreates you are very welcome, I loved the video.

Another terrific clip Shane. I did see the original video that you posted when you intlled th
Does this not conflict with building regulations as you are passing a power cable from an outlet/charger through your dry wall?
It shouldn't since I'm not running the cable inside the wall, but I'm no contractor. The also sell power over ethernet adapters for these mounts if you do need to run wires.
Hi, can you review the "brilliant smart home controller" or you heard something about this product for HomeKit, thanks
I do believe the Brilliant control panels also support ring.
there was an option to keep only one app visible- think its guided acess or something which might aavoid creating an extra id right?
Indeed you are correct. That is actually something I've begun doing since this video was made. It works great as long as you only intend to use one app on the iPad all the time.
What is the oldest model of iPad you can use with these home automation apps?
I would hate to invest in a new pad if Apple doesn't support older iOS when I have 2 old models.
I’m still using an old iPad Air 2. That might be the oldest, not sure. Just look at the latest iPadOS specs in the Apple website and see which devices it supports. As long as you can run the latest software, you should be good.
can you have two iPads I want one in living area by a/c and one in the master bed?
Sure!
And what about people getting into your pictures, iMessages and any other personal apps?
That's why I set up a separate Apple ID specifically for this iPad. It won't get any of my messages or emails, etc. You can also put the iPad into Guided Access mode which locks it into a single app and requires a passcode to exit.
You could have used the same Apple ID and turn in DND and guided access
Check out this video, it may give you some ideas:
th-cam.com/video/wNRvWU073SY/w-d-xo.html
Stellar video. I like the review and how thing may work for others and not you I liked that. Good stuff not repetitive and helpful info!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks very much Shane. Nice one
Thanks for watching!
£15 for the app you use (Home+5) is it really worth the dollar?
It's worth it if you are a serious homekit user imo. It's good for building advanced automations, organizing, etc.
Hey Shane,
How did you implement the roomba in homekit?
I am using HomeBridge with HOOBS to do this: th-cam.com/video/N26aSimVF2s/w-d-xo.html
after just getting into homekit and now trying to update my cameras to be compatible with homekit like the eufy indoor 2k camera (and i'm sure its the same with the eve cam and circle?), i realize that i am sacrificing a lot. once i got eufy into homekit, i lost the ability to detect motion based on people and pets. also motion zones. i assume in homekit secure video, at least zones are available (and maybe people detection?) but that means i have to subscribe and pay for icloud storage, which was the whole point of me getting the eufy cam in the first place because there is no storage fees. if i remove my eufy from homekit, now that removes my ability to get and use the homecam app. or even the ability to look at ALL my cameras in homekit. is there another way? to get cameras into homekit, but use the manufacturers app to record and notify of motion? seems homekit just disables everything thats great about the features in the eufy app.
@@ShaneCreates oh ok. thanks for the response. i hope you can try the eufy cam eventually since they are "homekit" compatible. but once i add them to homekit, it disables a lot of features on the eufy app side. is HSV available now with iOS13 or is that a iOS14 thing? because the only option i have is to record all motion, not specific to people. thanks
hi i just bought home+ 5, but somehow my accessories tab only show ALL accessories in one page but it didnt differentiate different rooms =(
I have the same problem
Get an android tablet, way more flexibility with these types of options...
@@tomar5e115 that wouldn’t work with HomeKit and, you’d have to buy a new tablet every year because they’re garbage.
Does this work on an iPad 4 running iOS 10.3.4?
If you are trying to use it for HomeKit, I’d recommend using an ipad that can get the latest iPad OS
Hi Shane,
I plane to place some wall mounted iPad (at least in the living room and the master bedroom).

Thanks !!! Haven’t notice it ! Great tip !
@@ShaneCreates Hi Shane,
Works great for my scenarios but unfortunately the camera don’t work the same way.
I can’t choose individually people for notification activity... 😭
Before, I used to have « your camera is on away mode » when my wife and I left the house (not sure about my translation of HomeKit message) and now I can’t.
@@jaymacibe3731 Hi 👋
Guess I’m not the only one with this problem 😉. Interesting about your feedback concerning turning your iPad into a hub. If it work, it would be great but, unfortunately for me, I think my iPad mini 2 is to old to become a hub. Though, I would have a raison to get a new one for the house 😅😂.
good afternoon
the homecamera solution
works with ivms - 4500 HD cameras?
Thank you
The cameras in this video are all cameras that support HomeKit.
