So it would be as if I were explaining this poetry than translating it تَطاوَلَ لَيلُكَ بِالأَثمَدِ Your night has become long in Al-Athmdi Al-Athmdi: a name of a place وَنامَ الخَلِيُّ وَلَم تَرقُدِ Al-Khaliu fall asleep .... and you haven't slept yet Al-Khaliu: The person who has no worries وَباتَ وَباتَت لَهُ لَيلَةٌ And he stays awake until his nights becomes كَلَيلَةِ ذي العائِرِ الأَرمَدِ like one of zul-a'aaiyri Al-Armadi nights zul-a'aaiyri Al-Armadi: a person with agitation and pain in his eyes. so he can't sleep well because of the pain وَذَلِكَ مِن نَبَإٍ جاءَني And that is the news that came to me وَخُبِّرتُهُ عَن أَبي الأَسوَدِ And I told him about Abu Al-Aswadi Abu Al-Aswad: Some said that Abu Al-Aswad was the uncle of the poet's وَلَو عَن نَثاً غَيرِهِ جاءَني And I have heard another news or rumor...... like this وَجُرحُ اللِسانِ كَجُرحِ اليَدِ And the wound of the tongue is like the wound of the hand لَقُلتُ مِنَ القَولِ ما لا يَزالُ يُؤثِرُ عَنّي يَدَ المُسنِدِ If this news reaches me, I will say something that people will pass on between them forever بِأَيِّ عَلاقَتِنا تَرغَبونَ Which of these do you want That you leave the enmity between us and you and reconcile Or that we avenge our deaths and you avenge your deaths أَعَن دَمِ عَمرٍ عَلى مَرثِدِ The blood of Amr and Murthad is still on the ground Amr and Murthad: Two men from Asad have been killed and they are the reason for seeking revenge فَإِن تَدفُنوا الداءَ لا نُخفِهِ and if you leave the enmity between us and you, we will not show it وَإِن تَبعَثوا الحَربَ لا نَقعُدِ And if you start the war, we will not sit down until it ends فَإِن تَقتُلونا نُقَتِّلُكُم If you kill us, we will kill you وَإِن تَقصِدوا لِدَمٍ نَقصُدِ And if you mean blood, we mean blood too مَتى عَهدُنا بِطِعانِ الكُماة We don't betray the promises we give to Komat. komat: Brave warriors. وَالحَمدِ وَالمَجدِ وَالسُؤدُدِ And praise, glory, and supremacy وَبَنيِ القِبابِ And build the domes وَمَلءِ الجِفانِ And filling the jifan وَالنارِ and fire وَالحَطَبِ المُفأَدِ And al-hatb al- mofaad jifan: eating utensils al-hatb al- mofaad: burning firewood All of these things indicate the sovereignty of his people and their strength at that time like they can build dome and if the war started his people can feed the warriors And they are able to protect the warriors from the cold because they have a lot of firewood وَأَعدَدتُ لِلحَربِ وَثّابَةً جَوادَ المَحَثَّةِ وَالمِروَدِ I cannot translate these two parts because in these two parts There are words in Arabic that are not found in English so from now on, I will explain what the poet says more than I will translate the poetry, because there are words in Arabic that do not exist in English. تَطاوَلَ لَيلُكَ بِالأَثمَدِ
Your night has become long in Al-Athmdi
Al-Athmdi: a name of a place
وَنامَ الخَلِيُّ وَلَم تَرقُدِ
Al-Khaliu fall asleep .... and you haven't slept yet
Al-Khaliu: The person who has no worries
وَباتَ وَباتَت لَهُ لَيلَةٌ
And he stays awake until his nights becomes
كَلَيلَةِ ذي العائِرِ الأَرمَدِ
like one of zul-a'aaiyri Al-Armadi nights
zul-a'aaiyri Al-Armadi: a person with agitation and pain in his eyes. so he can't sleep well because of the pain
وَذَلِكَ مِن نَبَإٍ جاءَني
And that is the news that came to me
وَخُبِّرتُهُ عَن أَبي الأَسوَدِ
And I told him about Abu Al-Aswadi
Abu Al-Aswad: Some said that Abu Al-Aswad was the uncle of the poet's
وَلَو عَن نَثاً غَيرِهِ جاءَني
And I have heard another news or rumor...... like this
وَجُرحُ اللِسانِ كَجُرحِ اليَدِ
And the wound of the tongue is like the wound of the hand
لَقُلتُ مِنَ القَولِ ما لا يَزالُ يُؤثِرُ عَنّي يَدَ المُسنِدِ
If this news reaches me, I will say something that people will pass on between them forever
بِأَيِّ عَلاقَتِنا تَرغَبونَ
Which of these do you want
That you leave the enmity between us and you and reconcile
Or that we avenge our deaths and you avenge your deaths
أَعَن دَمِ عَمرٍ عَلى مَرثِدِ
The blood of Amr and Murthad is still on the ground
Amr and Murthad: Two men from Asad have been killed and they are the reason for seeking revenge
فَإِن تَدفُنوا الداءَ لا نُخفِهِ
and if you leave the enmity between us and you, we will not show it
وَإِن تَبعَثوا الحَربَ لا نَقعُدِ
And if you start the war, we will not sit down until it ends
فَإِن تَقتُلونا نُقَتِّلُكُم
If you kill us, we will kill you
وَإِن تَقصِدوا لِدَمٍ نَقصُدِ
And if you mean blood, we mean blood too
مَتى عَهدُنا بِطِعانِ الكُماة
We don't betray the promises we give to Komat.
komat: Brave warriors.
وَالحَمدِ وَالمَجدِ وَالسُؤدُدِ
And praise, glory, and supremacy
وَبَنيِ القِبابِ
And build the domes
وَمَلءِ الجِفانِ
And filling the jifan
وَالنارِ
and fire
وَالحَطَبِ المُفأَدِ
And al-hatb al- mofaad
jifan: eating utensils
al-hatb al- mofaad: burning firewood
All of these things indicate the sovereignty of his people and their strength at that time
like they can build dome
and if the war started his people can feed the warriors
And they are able to protect the warriors from the cold because they have a lot of firewood
وَأَعدَدتُ لِلحَربِ وَثّابَةً جَوادَ المَحَثَّةِ وَالمِروَدِ
I cannot translate these two parts because in these two parts
There are words in Arabic that are not found in English
so from now on, I will explain what the poet says more than I will translate the poetry, because there are words in Arabic that do not exist in English.
He says I have prepared for war strong horses that are able to speed up and slow down. so easily
سَموحاً جَموحاً وَإِحضارُها
Subuhan Jamouhan and when it comes
كَمَعمَعَةِ السَعَفِ الموقَدِ
it voice be like the sound of palm fire
he is Describing his horses:
Subuhan: his horse extends it hands while it
Running and its look like it swimming
Jamouhan: he are again describing his horses and saying that his horses are energetic and fast.
and he saying that The sound of his horses while it running is like the sound of burning palm fronds
وَمَشدودَةَ السَكِّ مَوضونَةٍ تَضاءَلُ في الطَيِّ كَالمِبرَدِ
He describes his armor as being tough and cohesive
تَفيضُ عَلى المَرءِ أَردانُها كَفَيضِ الأَتِيِّ عَلى الجَدجَدِ
He likens his armor to the flood of a torrent on the smooth ground... because his armor are smooth on the body
وَمُطَّرِداً كَرِشاءِ الجَرورِ
He describes his spear as long as the rope of a deep well.
مِن خُلُبِ النَخلَةِ الأَجرَدِ
Made of: smooth palm wood
وَذا شَطَبٍ غامِضاً كَلمُهُ إِذا صابَ بِالعَظمِ لَم يَنأَدِ
He describes his sword and says that it is sharp and strong, and if it hits someone's body, it cuts it down to the bones.
