00:06 Why Do You Think it’s Important to Celebrate World Teen Mental Wellness Day?
It’s really important to raise awareness within the younger generation, just so they know that they’ve got an open place to talk and that they’re not alone because in a school environment, they won’t be the student that does suffer with mental health or anything like that.
00:25 In Your Experience, What Role Do Educators Play in Promoting Wellness in Secondary Schools?
I had a really good support network in school; we had a Designated Safeguarding Lead who always had a door open for us if we needed to talk, so a bad day at school wasn't understanding the work or anything like that.
I think it’s important to have such an open network where the students know they can just nip in and have that conversation, again so they know that they’re not alone and that they are getting the support they need.
00:52 How Can a School’s Commitment to Mental Wellness Contribute to a Positive Learning Environment?
I think when you’re at school and you’re carrying something around, you know it’s easy to divert your attention somewhere else, it could cause bad behaviour or lack of focus on work. I feel like if they did have that support network they’d be much more open to learning; you’ll probably get the best out of a student once you know they are getting supported.
01:15 Do You Have Any Advice to Help Secondary Schools Promote Mental Health Awareness?
I think just even like little workshops or anything like that, just open conversation and just something as simple as having that door open for students always so they know that they can have something to lean on.
You know they might necessarily not have that support network at home, so coming into school, they may see it as a bit more of a safe environment, so definitely just being that shoulder to lean on a little bit more and making sure that they know they can talk if they need to.
