How does the orange elbows stay on the flange?
Won't they over time come off the flange.

I liked how this was broken down to basics for folks who haven't worked with the material (e.g. how to screw into that type of plastic without over doing it) my recommendation is you give your viewers an idea of what comes before and after the septic tank so they understand it's going to be a bit more involved to go off grid regarding waste.

The same septic tank owner who installed & repaired septic tanks for a living did say that the blue food grade 50 gallon barrels could be made into a 3or4 barrel septic system.first 2 with T's last 2 with straight connectors but all must be at least 1 inch below the next and the initial intake line.

I would have had a bit more difference in the levels of the inlet n outlet even if it meant moving/adjusting some metal pipe ! Another thing to think about is adding a second settling tank 6"-8" apart connected in the center via 4" pipe between the two ! Better inlet and outlet fittings (which would require the risers moved from the center of tank and closer to the outter edges for monitoring and cleaning out) would allow for a effluent filter to catch larger pieces of outflow debris and save the soak away field much longer.

Do yourselves a favor and get it in the ground before you start cutting holes in it. It’s a lot better to dry fit your pvc to the tank in ground, to see where it will work best first.
I’ve done quite a few septics with these 330 gallon totes in Texas and that black German tank looks sweet but the flimsy white ones work just fine. Just make sure you fill them with water before you start pushing dirt over them so they don’t collapse in the cage :) I alway put a tin top on it too to help with that.

Excellent video, just one idea for the lid we can use hand sanitiser in order to push it in and then it dries off
Stainless steel through bolts with a flange on the inside, also a bead of silicone would not not be such a bad idea.

Another thing with the 90°fittings.
A few 1/4” holes on the top of the 90 will prevent a vapor lock and allow the water to flow freely.

I’d expect to see silastic to seal the flanges. Or plastic welding. Otherwise guaranteed to leak over time.
What about ground installation? Stuff like how deep,how far away from the building, angle of the sewer pipe going to the tank,stuff like that?
I have a house abroad that myself and my family have holidays in ive recently just built a bathroom and now need to build a septic tank. Im now without a job so skint and this is a great idea that i possibly will be doing. Just got to dig that damn hole 😂 thank you

Why isn't the inlet line a few inches higher than the drain line? This setup will just flood the inlet pipe before it has a chance to drain
This is an off grid system. Usually for the use of 2 people. The offset between the inlet and outlet doesn't need to be very much. Also, this system isn't for use of much Grey water, only black water. I build tiny homes and use these systems frequently. I don't know this man, but I've used his systems for 2 years now in off grid building. He has saved my customers thousands, and made me some coin at the same time. I have made some modifications of my own along the way, but everything works. Most of my systems are on large plots of land, deer leases, and small acreage that are unrestricted. This will not fly in restricted building locations that require permits. On larger septic applications, yes, the inlet and outlet pipes would need to be offset a bit more. Hope this helps.

The inlet needs to be a minimum of 2-3" above the outlet, use either 4" pipe or 3" I wouldn't use anything smaller, repeat the process if you get more IBC's. No interior baffles are needed. I'm offgrid and would prefer the use of sanitary T's those elbows can clog and not always function properly. The outlet can run out to a leach field and you can have perforated pipes, cloth & rocks (it's a lot but if you do that to code it'll last for years). If for some reason you want to drain in let's say an old wash or something I'd recommend the use of a backflow flanged pipe. The last thing you need is a flood going into your system into the home. Just remember, these are meant to be "temporary." 😂😂 they don't have to be though! 😅 MERICA' 🇺🇸🖕JB

I think the 90 has to be glued or will fall into bottom of tank. I wonder how long these will last?

use a bit of sealant as well. better safe than sorry. plus will need to look into a better seal for the inspection cover as that will leak. predrill some holes in the flange of the riser as in the video you can see it burst the side on the first screw. great step by step but worth adding in a few points.

@@BillyJoeJimBob28 Those IBC Totes are pretty soft and easy to cut through with a sharp blade. As long as you draw it out first and go slow its fine.

Great video. One thing though. I wouldn't use WD-40. Its a solvent as well as a lubricant. Its not recommended for use on rubber products.
Yep. WD-40 stands for water displacement formula 40. Its original purpose was and is to provide a layer that ice would not stick to on rockets. The cryogenic oxygen tanks would cool the rocket's metal exterior such that ice would build on it. This was dangerous as it could potentially cause the rocket to have a structural failure on the launch pad. Not to mention that the extra weight would impede lift-off, and if the ice fell off in an unbalanced way during launch it could cause the rocket to uncontrollably veer off in a direction other than up. Or to punch holes in things that should not have holes in them.
I'm on bedrock in northern New York so I can't bury it due to freezing temps i need to bury it can't afford to raise it any other solutions? composting would be difficult.

I made one of these and the first good rain had the dirt collapse the side. Something has to be put around metal cage to keep water/dirt pressure off the thin plastic.

@@andrewdavis5404 water doesn't hold the side walls in from dirt collapsing. The water just flowed out the field line. It was full of water. But full because they'll float, not collapse.

So, once i've made this, i would just connect my toilet to the inlet pipe I gather. And the outlet is connected to what? Would love to see it instslled and working before I commit to trying this out.

Why not put the flanges in from the inside as the flanges have thicker points round the screw holes which will give a better fixing for the screws, or insert the screws from the inside?

I just saw one IBC tote that use to be a septic tank. The owner is now standing in nasty stuff to put in a new real 500 gallon small septic tank bcuz the IBC tote crushed under the dirt and stopped up the toilet in the house and overflowed. So the wife cleaned up inside & the man was up to his knees outside cleaning out the hole to haul out the IBC tote & haul in the tiny 500 gallon real septic tank.

I have 2 questions:
I am wondering if a small amount of gas can escape from the join of the riser to the tank, for safety reasons, can it be sealed and a small diameter pipe placed into the top perhaps at the corner?
2. Can tthese tanks be serial connected together with a section of straight pipe to reduce emptying frequency and to further purify the runoff water?
Each tank needs a vent pipe which has not been mentioned in the video. It does not matter where you position it as long as its above the fluid level. You could also link tanks together as you ask, but each pipe needs a baffle so water passes through under the level of the water. Each tank needs a vent pipe also.
I suggest a tee baffle instead of the elbow to prevent siphon effect which will mess the system soakaway down stream. I also recommend the gas to be safely harvested using pipe system and filter to ensure the biogas is usable and not contribute to climate change adverse effects. Use this for cooking needs

I had one of this buried in a ground.....WILL CRUSH !!! The pressure and weight of the dirt can't compare with the liquid inside the tank. BESIDE is square. A SPHERE septic tank has a better chance
