- Field dressing a deer can be a quick process or it can be a nightmare if you don’t know what you’re doing. Commonly referred to as gutting a deer. This gets all the guts out so your meat doesn’t spoil and you can make the most of your harvest.
That was a good tutorial. Honestly I'm really impressed at how calm the deer was the whole time. Took it like a champ!
😂
Bro😂
😂😂😂😂
Watched 15 of these.
This is the best. Camera, clarity, taking your time for each step, explanation: all very good.
Thank you for the feedback!
I have watched so many videos on this. From the camera angle, quality picture and your step by step instructions. This was a great video. Thank you.
Of course! Thanks for the feedback.
Nothing like field dressing a deer when it is 20 degrees! That was last night in Southern Ohio. I shot a big doe at last light on my daughters farm. She and I did the process in 10-15 minutes. I am 74, been doing this all my life. This is a great video for learning.
20 degrees?! That’s cold! Luckily it was around 60 when I did the video. Thanks for the feedback!
The coldest one I’ve ever had was -34, it was a 245 lb field dressed 10 pointer i shot tracking on snow after catching up to him with three does. Im in the northernmost part of Maine and it gets pretty brutal here in November, especially towards the end of the month. Needless to say, putting my hands in that warm chest cavity felt good 😂
Brings back the memories. I remember doing this when I was 7. RIP DAD.
Right!lost my dad almost 2 years ago....if only we could go one a few more hunts 😢
Taking my older sons out this season for a couple of deer hunts, hope I can do the same for them. Make some memories while we can!
I like the sticks trick to keep the hind legs spread...I'm gonna give it a try on my next deer. Thanx for doing the video.
You’re welcome!
Heading out tomorrow for my first time alone. Been hunting with my dad for many of years. Just hit 18 and my dad has work tomorrow morning as i have work in the afternoon. So im heading out by myself. Have never gutted a deer as ive never shot one. This helps so much. Im much more confident. Thank you!!
Glad to help! Good luck this year!
Bro did you get a deer?!
@@mikerowell992 sadly no, can’t really remember how the season went. I know I saw a few but they were right on the property line and a little farther of a shot then I wanted to make.
@@tsgames5721 Tough luck. I'm hoping to get out this season for the first time. Would love to take a deer with a longbow, but I know that's hoping for a lot. Just got a new 300blk bolt gun, just in case the bow doesn't work out. Subs are really nice out in the woods!
@@mikerowell992 good luck to ya. Put my drawing in for a Pa elk tag for the first time this year. Hoping to get a rare chance at that. Won’t have much time to hunt deer season in pa as I’ll be on the road down south for work.
Nicely done video! I loved the sticks through the tendons was a very effective way of keeping the deer's legs fixed. But the axe work would have been better with a saw, which you did mention could be used.
Thanks for the feedback! I like to use a saw too, it just seems I always have a hatchet handy in the woods.
This was by far, the best how-to field dress I’ve ever seen. Great job and awesome tips
Thank you! 🙏
The sticks through the hind legs to hold it open was genius. The whole video was good, but that little trick might be gold.
Thanks for the feedback!
For some, this may be simple as you you grew in this fantastic environment. But I never hunted and never dress my kill. This was an awesome simple method. Very instructive and calm demeanor. I learned a lot. I wanted to see the cutting too to see how you cut the nice tenderloins and parts. Thank you for this and keep it up.
Thanks for the feedback. I will do a video on tenderloins if I get another one this year.
Good video!
I've never gutted anything in my life so this could help me do so
Thank you!
You’re welcome!
Best one I’ve watched seen so many on here. Good camera angle and information great job
Thank ya!
This is one of the very best field dressing videos I have ever seen. Excellent footage and you took the time to explain clearly. Also, great tip with staking the legs down with sticks.
I appreciate your feedback!
I have seen a lot of videos in this and this is the best one I’ve see. The sticks to hold the legs open was a good idea.
We appreciate your feedback!
Zero hunting experience, i was just curious how dressing works
A little unusual for my untrained eye but very informative, reminds me of frog dissection labs
Thanks for watching and for the feedback. We never did frog dissection in school, I kinda feel robbed!
Thank you for the clear footage. Taking my friends kids hunting and this video was great for them.
Glad to hear it, good luck out there!!
Thank you so much. I haven't field dressed a deer in so long and when I asked family to show me they just do it and never explain what their doing
Glad to help!
I do everything pretty much the same except the pelvis. I don’t cut around the butt at all. I use a bone saw on the pelvis and pull the guts south through the channel between the hams then pull the and the colon peels out
This was a great tutorial but why didn't you remove the pelvic bone first? I think it would have been a lot easier to push out the guts
The branch through the tendons is genius.
Thanks! I did it for the video, but I think I’ll be doing it every time now.
This beats Steve Rinella's tutorial. Choppin that sternum is a bold move when you've got the guts right there but opening the chest cavity like that seems great to access the diaphragm rather than reaching in deep the way I've been doing it!
Thank you for the feedback! When I forget a hatchet I do the same thing, reach in deep and get bloody.
This is one of the best field dressing videos I have watched. Excellent footage and great skill demonstrated. Thank you for this. I'll be saving it to review again (and again) before heading into the woods to harvest a deer.
Thank you! Glad you like the video and good luck this year!
bruh hands down best video !!
Thank you!
I need a hatchet now 🤔, great video thank you
You’re welcome, thanks for the feedback.
Sticks to pin down the legs are a great idea
Thanks!
Well I've carved all my son's & his buddies whitetail, from tenderloins, backstraps but my son has always gutted them. I'm going to try your method young fella this season 👍🦌 74+ 🍁 hunter Yorkshire expat
That’s awesome!! Good luck this year!
AWESOME VIDEO SIR! I'M GONNA SAVE THIS BECAUSE YOU MADE IT EASY!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
You’re welcome!
Another way to open the chest up just in case you forget a saw or axe is with your knife cutting right next to the sternum not recommended though because it does dull your knife
Yea I imagine that it would, thanks for the feedback!
Apparently you're better off starting the upper incision just where the ribs start as opposed to the sternum to preserve the brisket as much as possible. Aside from that great video especially loved how you put emphasis on completely detaching the colon, something people neglect a lot and it complicates things later.
Thanks for the feedback!
I would have cut the pelvic bone allowing for easy pass through and the meat to cool faster. Love the stick through the Achilles - Definitely using that idea
I always cut it at the end because I’m afraid to cut the rectum, but your right gotta cool the meat as quickly as possible. The sticks make things a lot easier, hope it works for you!
great video
Thanks!
As a new hunter thanks so much
You’re welcome!
Why don’t you use a gut hook? That way you don’t get into the guts. I have used one for many years. Were the blood? Folding Bone saw works great.
Im 9 years old and i love this
Glad to hear it!
Very informative. Thank you.
Thanks and you’re welcome.
Nice job.
Thanks!
why was there such little blood? anytime ive field dressed im up to blood to my elbows
I’m not really sure. Sometimes it’s the same way for me, this one was just different.
Great video btw. Just curious do you get bone shards in the meat by using the Hatchet?
They usually fall into the canal and then I will pick them out or they will fall out when I pick the deer up to drain it. Never had an issue with them getting into the meat though.
So when you start the anus just cut 360 degrees and then just let it go or pull it out right away
Just let it go, it will all come out when you pull the guts. As long as you cut all the way around it prior.
They burn 🔥 hot don’t they!? Great method I do like the sticks and 🪓
@peterpoel1019 Yes, thank you for the feedback! That was the first time I used the sticks actually.
Like the sticks for the legs , A nice bone saw would be better and safer for the Pelvic and sternum, recommend the butt puller and wear gloves
I like the idea of a bone saw but it seems I always have a hatchet handy. Thanks for feedback!
He didn’t take the heart out it is edible and good qualified Man
We always go back and get the heart! 2nd best meat in the deer.
I hope the deer recoveres soon 🙏
😂
Very well done my friend
Thanks!
Good video man
Thanks!
Nice tutorial.
Thanks!
Woah is the stomach normally so big? Or has it gassed up already?
She was slightly bloated but It’s not unusual.
Out of curiosity, where was the shot placement on this deer. And what was it shot with?
30-30 Hollow point, shot placement was upper neck.
how long does it take before you have to ice the deer down? I notice on swamp people they never put ice on the gators.
It’s weather dependent but if it’s above 70 you got about 2 hours before it starts to turn. It it’s hot where you hunt I recommend getting game bags and quartering it in the woods/field. That will cool it down a lot faster.
Very well done 👍👍
Thanks!
Best video
Thank ya!
If you cut off a bucks junk do you not get pee everywhere? Have you ever tried using pruners or loppers to cut the ribs or pelvis?
Most of the time the deer release their bladders when they pass. On occasion, I have seen a full one and had to be careful taking it out. As for the genitalia, never had any issues just cutting it away. A bone saw works well for the pelvis and chest bone. Never tried pruners but I imagine they would work just fine.
Good job son
Thanks!
very nice job
Thanks!
Merrricaaaa 🦅🦅🦅hunting wooooo hoo
This is the energy I need!
Thank you
Welcome!
Well done
Thanks!
After cutting it free, I would have tied a string around the colon to reduce the chance of leakage.
That’s a good idea! Thanks for the feedback.
Awesome 🔥
Thanks!
thanks
Welcome!
Unreal :-O
Thanks for the feedback!
What if she was feeding her child
It’s possible but most yearlings are capable of self-sustaining by Oct or Nov.
Nice
Thanks!
I like to take my watch off prior to the procedure.
Now I can say it’s been “field tested” 😂
@@TheGreatAmericanOutdoorsmen Thanks for sharing the video.
اون بچه داشته تو چه شکارچی هستی که نمیدونی تو چه فصلی نباید شکار کرد ، 🤔
🇧🇷👍
Thanks!
How is this allowed om yputube but we cant clean a gun. Weird
Idk I have a lot of gun disassembly videos and those are fine. So I would think gun cleaning would be as well.
@@TheGreatAmericanOutdoorsmen you must be too small for their radar
Maybe 🤔
How many guys have you seen gut deer with their watches on?
Only the time sensitive ones 😂
What dod that poor deer do to you
Nothing, this is where I get my food.
It dared to be tasty.
i was fine with dressing my own deer until you used the words "milk sack"
😂 not all of them will have that, this one just happened to.
@@TheGreatAmericanOutdoorsmen thats good
Thanks for sharing. Couldn’t you open the pelvis bone prior to pulling everything out, so that the anus pulls out easier? I see you basically pulled the anus out from the front versus sliding everything out in one direction with the anus, correct?
Correct, the reason I do it last is to avoid accidentally cutting it and potentially spilling bile into the meat.
@@TheGreatAmericanOutdoorsmen ok thanks. So your basically pulling the anus out from inside as you pull the guts out. I always wondered how that works when I see this method.
Yes and you’re welcome! Thanks for watching.
No gagging, lol
Not unless you pop the stomach.
@@TheGreatAmericanOutdoorsmen agree in most cases. Gotta know my hunting buddy to love him. He can defy about anything
Don't forget gloves
I know! I always forget to put them in my harvest bag.
why would you need gloves?
@Scalytale I like to use them when I touch the glands or if there is nowhere to wash off the blood from my hands.
@@Scalytale 1.) Dander Allergies. I've had my eyes nearly swollen shut before from field dressing. Won't attempt until I'm gloved up.
Excuse me but this is the worst way I ever saw of gutting a deer.
Thanks for the feedback!
There's always 1 dousche who comments
What knife are you using?
The razors edge, replaceable blade. It’s the size of a pocket knife and is my all time favorite for field dressing.
@@BrianCox-b4yI do not know the meaning of dousch in your life, in my world it means "shower" but I take it you remark was not friendly...
I give an hones remark on the video an do not wat te be offended by persons like you.
There are manny ways to gut a deer and this was by far the worst I ever saw, but as that is your standard then you got a lot to learn.
In the country were I live we have a high etical hunting standard and we are thaugt and trained to do so.
So let me show you how it is done the proper way by clicking this youtube link, never mind the spoken language and let the video speak or switch over to translate.

That mom was pregnant, why would you kill it?It's baby just trying to find a new mom.Because of you you kill mother nature savage
It would have been impossible or for her to be pregnant this time of year. Leftover milk from the previous offspring.
Liver doesn’t look healthy
What makes you say that? Color? Just curious.
such a waste.
Thanks for the feedback!
Its full bad work, full gas video
All gas, no brakes!
Great video! Thank you.
