ROTFL. Sitting, going through my feed. Get the notification you posted. My daughter was laying on the opposite couch and had fallen asleep. Clicked on your video and within 10 seconds, my daughter sits up, raises her arms to the ceiling and says “DARRRK DEEENNN”. She recognized your voice/intro immediately and LOVES you! She’s an animal/insect/ocean/overall animal lover. It was hilarious. You know you’re validated when your voice is so recognizable that it wakes an 8 year old from a dead sleep!!!

The biggest native spider in N. Indiana is the black and yellow garden spider. They can have up to a six inch leg span, with the body being about 1 1/2 to two inches long. I put my hand on one once, they’re very bristly. Another one I saw in this area when I was a kid, was a raft spider. It had about a three inch body, but the legs were about five inches long. It would float on the surface tension of pond water.

Wow that is a big orb weaver! Such a big booty too! I used to not like orb weavers and think they were an ugly spider species but over the years, I gotten to really appreciate them. Our spiders here are more yellow and black. I had one I gotten to care about. She made a nice web up by a bug light on the patio and I got to see her quite often for a while. I really liked her. She was up just to high to give her offerings but if her web had been lower I would had. I enjoyed showing her off to our members that live here. They have mental limitations so it was fun to show her off and talk about her and expose them to nature. I named her Charlotte. I think we had her for almost a month before I found her dead on the ground most likely blown out from some strong wind that night. I was so sad to loose her. I still have her in a box preserved. I hope the spider you got will stay. That would be neat to see her settle in.
Also If Im not mistaken, in the greek myth of Arachne, it was a orb weaver she was turned in to.

That orb weaver is also known as a bolas spider. They spend most of the day disguised as bird poop and hunt at night using various chemical lures to attract moths. They hang from a silk thread and capture the moths with a silk thread with a sticky end that they use like a bolas hence the name.

They live for about 7 years. They molt only three times in their life. Once a year for the first three years. If she hadn't molted I would say she just died of old age, if you didn't get her as a baby. Though only molting once in the three years that you've had her is a bit odd. Also with her staying in her burrow for such an extended period of time I would do a complete search of that enclosure for and babies if you had put her with a male. As it can take up to 7 months, give or take a month or two for the babies to hatch and molt for the first time and leave the mothers burrow. Also the length of her body should be, if the species from America, 3.8 - 5 cm long. For the other species I'm not sure as I've only had Mastigoproctus giganteus giganteus, the species from America.

The property was neglected by the state, grass were allowed to grow tall and the building wasn't repaired etc etc. Literal HUNDREDS of spiders could be found in one apartment alone. Is it possible for an araneus which has not made eggs to have spent a winter inside a den or a warm place, and survived by feeding from infesting stink bugs?
This may explain the huge size.

In australia we have 10+ centimetre Golden orb weavers (Trichonephila and Nephila sp.). They are really docile. You should look them up.

  • @ayemjake
    @ayemjake 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Araneus and Neosconas are generally docile, but one thing they do dislike is being picked up by the thorax, especially when their thorax are very plump.

P.s. that place you picked to release her looks exactly like Washington State Terrain. All the trees and wide open spaces you just put her in spider Paradise. Oh and now you just said you don't think your neighbors will be happy about this. If I were your neighbor I wouldn't be happy about it either. I'm trying so hard to lose my arachnophobia.

Here in Canada (where I am, anyway), our spiders don't *usually* get that big. I'm assuming that it's because of our cold winters.
However, about 10 years ago, my son and I lived in a new subdivision of our city, and we had a monster spider living under our deck. I'd never seen anything like it before. She looked a lot like a crab to me, and she was white...and about the same size as the spider at the beginning of this video.
I was flabbergasted. I have arachnophobia, so I didn't want to get too close to her. Lol
I did a bunch of googling, and decided that she was a garden spider.....?
She never tried to enter our house, and was very happy to live under the deck, so we said hi to her everyday (my son was about 10 at the time), and we left her alone. (We even named her Seraphina the Spider.)
Then one day, a construction worker was in our yard (building a garage)....he saw her...knocked her down, and stepped on her.
My son and I were devastated.
    Our poor Sera. 😑
Never before or since have I seen a spider like that in our city.

What you should do is give some enclosures to your friends for testing. That way you can get most of the kinks. Out of the system but there will be some outliers. Just to let you know because we are humans

Notice the "horns" on its abdomin. Its not as pronounced, but it is there. Araneus Angulatus?
I've handled orb weavers, as a hobby to capture them. I find the best way to handle them is to either let them onto your hand, then closing your hand without making a tight fist. Leave an opening with your thumb and index finger, the reason for this is because they may bite. However, there is a way to prevent that. Blow gently into the opening and this will trigger the arachnid to curve into a ball. Its a natural behavior in the wild. When the wind blows, its their instinctive reaction. Also, Orb weavers surf the wind by letting out a thread and be carried into their potential next home. I find that its the best way to handle them without causing harm. Besides, even if they bite you, their venom isn't potent as black widows or other arachnids. That is, if they do decide to inject. Most are dry bites as a defensive tactic.
I know because I use to live in the Philippines, and there's many things there that are frowned upon if you're an animal lover. Hopefully, that's no longer the case.

Kiwi is a hunting spider, maybe it would be better to release an injured roach (or some other insect that cannot burrow) into her enclosure and give her some exercise?

Hello ! Your areanus angulatus may try to bite you but her fangs are just too weak to pierce through your skin, I use to manipulate these kind of spiders, one day holding one in my hand I noticed that she was holding on my finger using only her fangs and I didn't even noticed that she was bitting me (at least trying to) ^^
