Thanks! I had no idea you could make different profiles and scene collections in OBS until now. I use OBS for a LOT and I'm totally going to use this to set profiles to different setups

The best I found was talking about how to record the vertical format of your screen, and I realized it's not what I wanted having watched half of it :-( I think self-recording should be mentioned in the title of your video... And that you do it with OBS. I briefly looked at OBS in my search and couldn't determine if it allows self-recording... So your content was precious and helped me set up! What kind of output format do you recommend for Instagram reels? I tried MP4 and was not impressed with the quality. Although it might be an issue with my camera, not the program.
That does help! Thanks Elena. Mp4 is the most popular widely used format for video globally. No getting around that, usually the two factors that impact video quality are equipment and recording settings. Then if you're editing your videos it also comes down to how you export your video from the editing software. It can get confusing from here but chances are it's either the camera or settings

Great stuff, thanks! I might just rotate one of my monitors and set it to be vertical to make things even easier, I noticed that the quality becomes so-so when you scale the window. In my case i use a 2560x1440 monitor but when you record 1080x1920 you need to scale it from 1440 to 1920 and that can make things blurry (especially if you want to do software tutorials with text elements).
Since I have my two monitors on arms that can rotate I could just get it with the 2560 as height instead of the 1440 one.
You may have just convinced me to rotate a monitor vertically lol

Hey I know this video is older but I just came across it! I set my resolution to the same thing you did but it does not look like yours its not showing the full 9:16 view it almost looks zoomed in and I dont know how it fix it.. When I test record it shows black boxes above and below my video source but when I look at it on OBS there is no black boxes. Any suggestions?
The one thing I'm confused by here Sam is that it looks correct in OBS. This has me thinking that you have down scaling setup in the settings maybe by default. Comb through all the video settings to ensure they are all set to a 9:16 orientation.

The stripped lines indicate outside the recording canvas. No markings will be recorded in the content

still my quality is f99cked up. I think it's a matter of my monitor. Im using 1920x1080 but to record a photoshop canvas im not able to fit in 1080x1920 without losing the quality. sizing up makes it trash. I need a 4k monitor i guess
Hello, can you make it vertical by default on your Mac camera ?
OBS remembers the last profile you used when you open it each time. So if you leave it on vertical in "profile and scene collection" it should be the exact same next time you open the app

Hey Partha, I've never tried that because I don't usually recommend using one. Unless you're sharing highly technical information it may be beneficial in the long run to practice sharing your message and treat the lens like it's your friend. Reading while speaking just doesn't connect the same way as a practiced and confident speaker. I recommend a regular practice of both scripting and memorizing single sentences with multiple takes saving the best take for last (this makes it easy to edit out the bad takes quickly.) The second delivery method I would recommend practicing is freestyle, just pick a key takeaway and practice without any script. That will get you started if you want to try without the teleprompter.

I doubt that would work because I think the video will still be recorded in 16:9 orientation making the output landscape orientation

I didn't notice anything considerable and honestly don't think it's necessary to get a high resolution output, most platforms have file size limits anyway. So when it comes to short form vertical video the content itself is really key, just look at tiktok and how unpolished the most engaged with content is

How to record area of computer screen only where computer pointer mouse follows. Is it possible to record only that area without constant adjustment?

i find this hard to use because i seem to not be able to fit into this canvas size. any tips?
It can be awkward I've found if you're too close it can cause that issue, best suggestion is try moving further away from the camera
Won't the resolution suffer as a result of enlarging it like that?
You could always go even higher res since you can set whatever you want but quality has been a non issue for me using this method. The real problem was actually large file sizes since I posted to 6 platforms earlier this year I noticed all platforms have different requires for max file size. You want to strike a balance between quality and size of files
For some reason when i try to add the display of the screen, it doesn't give me the option to select my mac screen
That could be a permissions based problem, sorry I can't help with this I'm a windows nerd.
This is not what i wanted to see. I want my Mac screen in 9:16 ratio but the entire screen without stretching the image. Am a content creator and want to record shorts in Mac. Couldn’t figure out how to just record screen in vertical mode without distorting and stretching image. If i choose fit to screen, again it looks totally bad with stretched screen.
Can I super impose my webcam over the screen capture?
Great question for another tutorial! The short answer is yes, you can also use masks to change the shape of your video feed but keep in mind layering a video feed on top of screen capture results in a burned in video file. You wont be able to remove the overplayed video from the recording without cropping

I know this was a while ago but this video saved me so much time. Thank you very much. Not sure though why my headset is not recording the mic? I assume I have a setting turned off. Any tips appreciated. I am using a bluetooth headset....I would be happy to trun on the mic in my webcam ..I am not good with OBS at all obviously...
If you haven't already, try adding your headset as an "audio input device" this is the only way to bring in audio capture to OBS
