"The summit is optional, getting down is mandatory." Seems like a really sound guy, got to think about our families too. Really enjoying his No Shortcuts book, great work Ed!
My absolute favorite is his nickname for The Bottleneck. He turns it into something positive by calling it The Motivator. You gotta move effectively in a timely manner because you don't know when that serac starts tumbling down!
I thoroughly enjoy listening to Ed speak of nature and his true belief in "listening to the mountain." Call it spiritual if you'd like, but I think it's more of him telling the mountain that he doesn't want to die .... that he is thankful to be a part of it .... help me live through this because I DO respect everything about you. I've always believed that this man climbs for all the "right" reasons - subjective as that may be, I respect him having moral and ethical standards while on the mountain. Sure we understand that high altitude climbing calls into question these life standards, but for the most part, my take away from Ed is that he does not want to be a different man than who he is at sea level. To change that would be a disservice to who he is and ultimately, a disservice to the mountain itself. It seems that the rush does not inflate the ego, rather it lifts up his spirits for simply being alive and being able to do what he does. Fantastic. Thank you for sharing.
I only have one word for Ed Viesturs, LEGEND!!
It would be a complete pleasure to meet up with Ed and spend some time with him.
I met Ed at the rainier mountaineering festival 15 years ago. Very funny and humble guy.
Got so much respect for Ed V . Big inspiration. 2023 ✌ 🧗♂️
