  • Prime Time today discusses the methodologies used in giving accreditations and rankings for institutions of higher learning in India. Professor Krishna Kumar of Delhi University says that the 'whole system' of higher education in India is in a deplorable condition and that corruption is 'widespread'. He adds that given none of the top institutions of higher education being able to make it to the top 250 ranks at the international level is itself an indication that our universities are 'not eligible to be evaluated' and ranked on any parameter. A countrywide ranking of educational institutions was released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development on Monday in which Indian Institute of Science was ranked as the top university in India. Need to share this with my professors. This sword of NAAC has been hanging on our heads for too long, and with no significant improvement in the education system at all. I practically spent the last semester of my Masters at Mumbai University protesting against the poor time & instructional management of the examination department

Incredible journalism by Ravish ji! The most important developmental aspect of the society, education, has been constantly undermined over other factors. The peculiar rankings of Delhi colleges points towards suspicion.

I wish to share another disturbing aspect of Indian Private Universities from my personal experience. They are specialising in “giving” degrees rather than Center of learnings. Hence they do not need honest academics for teacher but rather crooks who managed to get their masters or PhDs from equally fake institutions and would “manage” students rather than teaching them. One excellent example of this problem is GD Goenka University Gurgaon where a fake PhD not only managed to get a faculty position but rose to become Dean School of Engineering, even when he could not teach any technical subject. He was instead, good at every “other” thing that these Universities need. Save India from them else we will be flooded with incompetent idiots with degrees in their hands claiming reservations soon. Private universities have done more harm to India in this way than any other source by slow poisoning of professional competence of Indian workforce.

students and parents shud keep their eyes open while selecting an institution and shud not blindly follow rankings bestowed by any governmental or non-governmental system. Thanks, NDTV and Ravish ji for good debate
