When designing such machines in those days thjey didn't think about compremising for lower cost...they built thse machines to last. Just like my vintage 1956 frigerator..still working.
I think of the movie U571… “she’s old.. but she’ll hold”… tremendous truth in the term “they don’t make em like they used to”… back in the late 50’s my dad mounted a few bridgeport spindle heads to a planer for a special production run. I don’t know the details. This is like watching Mozarts fifth symphony live..
I used to use a couple of their hydraulic shapers as needed. They really had some grunt. And would leave a mirror finish on the finish pass. One had power down feed on the compound slide. A little noisy compared to the the purely mechanical ones but tool never dragged.
