  • I'm slowly working on my hurdy-gurdy prowess. Accomplished: applying rosin to the wheel; changing the cotton on one (1) string, the trompette, which now only screeches discordantly about 50% of the time; manipulating the tangents so that the low chanterelle now plays an octave and a third more or less in tune (the high tangents are too close together to manipulate properly, and I can't move the nut because the NG does not have a movable nut). Still to come: somehow figure out how to get both chanterelles in tune, damn it, even if it involves magical powers; make the trompette behave; get a more consistent sound out of the chanterelles; probably approach the whole chien issue more methodically and not just yeet my way through it, though I kind of enjoy the headlong approach; and more, probably, which I'll figure out as I go. I am pleased that this instrument fulfils some need emanating from the frustrated bagpipe player in me. Drones are my favourite.
