Larry Bird helped turn this series around by challenging his teammates after getting blown out by 33 in game 3. The play of Dennis Johnson was key in game 4 & game 5 scoring 22 points in each. He also helped defend Magic so the Lakers could not run. Larry Bird was awesome in game 5 with 34 pts & 17 rebounds. It was a great series. The Lakers certainly had their chances but somehow KC Jones' Celtics found a way win. Was a great series as was the next year when the Lakers won. Loved the 80s!!

Love it. When basketball was at its highest level. When basketball was played like it was meant to be played by real men.

The Game 6 officiating gave the Lakers the game. It never should have went 7. But David Stern wanted his highest rated game of all-time (1984 Gm 7 Finals).

I guess they had to create drama and make it a 7 game series but I put that series loss on Magic Johnson. Worthy pass in game 2 only allowed the game to go into overtime, but Magic Johnson dribbling out the shot clock was a bigger mistake by far.

I think this series was fixed. It could have easily been a LA sweep but Magic Johnson threw away 2 games with some of the dumbest mistakes by a player of his caliber in the Finals, like game 2 dribbling the shot clock away and not even getting a shot off, then throwing the Ball straight to Parish in game 4.

Did the referees play their role?

Statement's like this bring a chuckle and make you shake your head; The Lakers were NEVER going to sweep the Celtics in 1984...they simply started out stronger and held the tempo and flow for the first two games. Having seen two games during the series at the Garden(2+7), I saw the intensity between both teams; For first three games, K.C. Jones foolishly put the undersized Henderson on Magic, and of course Johnson exploited it. Once DJ was on him, it all changed; Fan's of the Lakers should know that the late, great Dennis Johnson was the first guard of the 1980's to be considered " destructive " on the defensive end, and this was never more apparent when he was on Magic. I'd ask this poster to back up his claim of it being fixed, but he can't since it's a typical, revisionist attitude Lakers fan's have adopted when their team loses a Finals; Same thing happened in 2008, as the Lakers had a cake walk through the playoffs, only to face Boston, who had the best record, best defense and was the best rebounding team that year with THREE future HOF still playing at peak, or near peak. 1984 was a great, great series, and the following year the first game of the 1985 finals became the " memorial day massacre " as Boston inexplicably destroyed the Lakers by 37 points; It was the worst thing that could have happened, as the Lakers came back pissed off, and even though Bird was playing with a broken elbow and two fingers dislocated on his shooting hand(bar fight), the Lakers won...and they deserved to win...Just as the Celtics deserved to win the 84 title. Nothing " fixed " in either...Just two, once in a lifetime teams that had nearly 11 HOF combined, which is just insane how good these teams were. I miss basketball when it was played like your life depended on it, and for the young guys that weren't around...enjoy history!

It wasn't fixed, because Celtics own the Lakers. Lakers were lucky to beat Celtics in 1985, 1987 and 2010. Fixed in 2010. 9-3 Boston, NUFF said!

the comments of many of those faker fans who say that the lakers lost the series becuase of games,2 and 4 are nothing more than pathetic wishful thinking. the celtics won period! besides Celtics hace their number! 9-3 against fakers! get over it!!!

Magic Johnson is supposedly the 2nd best player of all-time, but cant make a free throw when it matters.

No question, I think he is absolutely a top 10 all time player, and it is very likely that he is even top 5, but number 2 is where most "experts" but him, and I just dont see him that high.

Creepy Stalker I've seen most people rank him in the Top 5. He wasn't better than Kareem or Wilt.

Yea I can definetly agree with that ranking, he was something special back in the day.

those who say the lakers gave away the series are mostly lakers fans; i know for sure the celtics wouldn't have allowef themselves to be swept!
