When I first opened a repair shop in 1990 I specialized in Volvo repair. Our first flyer offered a timing belt special on the B230 4 cylinder engines for $49.95 parts and labor! Back then a basic timing belt replacement on that engine took about 30 minutes. A big change from the $1000 and up 1/2 day jobs for timing belt repairs on newer VVT engines at the end of my career in 2023.
Great to watch someone who is every bit as good as me I’m retired now but had my own garage for 28 years and loved every swear word and stripped knuckles in all that time sometimes very frustrating lol but loved it
Home "mechanic" here, I've never done a timing belt before, always feared them, until I got my most recent car, 2009 Zafira 1.6, the belt on that is incredibly easy to change and of course, from your recommendations, it's fitted with an INA kit ;)
I tell anyone who asks "What should I buy?" to get themselves a 1.5dci Fluence. They look at me like I am nuts - but, they're a simple car to repair, they're tough, they do big mileages, repairs aren't fortunes - loads run about here as taxis - taxi lads know what's what.
Great video, as always. The newer K9K euro 6b or c engine has a water-cooled intercooler in the j11 Qashqai and the bracket for it is in the way where the crack pin goes in so you need to have a longer pin or one with a 1/4inch hole to fit a extension 👌 great Renault design there 😀
Correct. Fairly sure the laser timing tool doesn't have the 1/4 inch hole. I ended up buying the genuine timing tool to do this on a MK5 Clio dci as it has the water/air intercooler.
Once upon a time,in about 2002 i done done 10 belts in a day....😂😂😂...i know it sounds absurd...but i had a client that sold ex Bt vans...6 transits and 4 ecorts i think it was..normaly i would go every 2 week and do 4 transits or something...good days for me😊
Great Video. Have you a video of changing an oil pickup seal on a Vauxhall 20 cdti 163hp AWD. I have change one on a FWD 20CDTI laying flat on my back 90% of the time, not an easy task. In fact at one point I was laying under the motor when a gust of wind blew the up and over door shut trapping my ankles ooooooooo 81 now so watch your videos and think, I can still manage a timing belt. Thanks
It's not always the engine that makes it difficult it's the car they put it in ! The engine looks pretty well the same as in the Mk 2 Megane 1.5 Dci. Doing the belt and water pump on that car was a pain in the *rse !
@@NotALot-xm6gz Wouldn't call it bomb proof but with regular servicing it may not be far off. A lot are lost to cam belt failures because in some vehicles it is an awkward job and so expensive so people leave it then blame the engine when the 10 year old (or older) cam belt fails, takes out the engine and effectively writes off the vehicle. Renault not putting a Woodruff key on the crank until June 2006 was a stupid (deliberate ? ) oversight which didn't help.
The Renault 1.2 16v is another easy timing belt. The 2.5 dci is easy also. You don't even have to remove the crank pulley as the bottom timing pulley is its own pulley.
My kit from INA, the belt marks match camshadt & fuel pump but not the crank? When I put the OEM belt on the crank mark on the OEM doesnt either? Same Juke 2014 1.5dci). Strange
I did the canbelt change on that dci engine in a Quasqui and it was NOT easy. No space to remove the engine mounting alu parts. Up a little, down a little .........aahg

I have done quite a few of those belts and they are fairly easy. However, recently I had to remove the cylinder head on one in a Qashqai and the limited access to the rear of the engine turned it into a nightmare. I think it would have been easier and quicker to have removed the engine.
How can i as a home mechaninc get hold of those instructions as you got on the tablet?? Can i download a PDF or program that will show me those steps and torque specs for parts? Haynes only covers car models to a certain year sadly.
At what point do you torque the 3 x 8mm's on the camshaft pulley? Is it once you have torqued the tensioner to 27nM? I cant see a point in the video where the 3 x 8mms are torqued (after backing them off earlier in the video?)
I've forgotten to fit that timing cover back plate twice now 🤦♂️and the first time the car came back after a few weeks as the tenchaner or bolt failed pulled all the threads out of the engine smashed the valves etc and I will never know if it was my fault for torquing a one uss bolt twice or a faulty part. When I realised I did it again 🤢 but it was ok
@baz In regards removing the crankshaft bolt, can this be done without an expensive impact? (Home mechanic). I have an impact but I know it's not powerful enough!. Would a breaker bar achieve it?

The easiest timing belt ever is on a 1.2 nova or 1.3 astra. MK1 and MK2. Don't even have to move the usually seized water pump. Whack it on like a bike chain. Don't even get me started on the MK1 nova and astra clutches. Record for me was around 20 minutes. 😂😂😂😂😂 Oh how I love older cars.
I did one a while back on an old kangoo...that old boner had a floating crank and a manually tensioned alternator that is a pain to tighten up.......hoping my K9K has a key on crank, but hey ho, see how we go :-0
Never used tools for cambelt. Mark the timing on the spokes with a white pen, and mark the old belt and compare to new and marked, these tools can cost more than £50, and in my opinion a waste of money.
